Kevin Davidoff reports that the Yankees and Mets have had several conversations
https://nypost.com/2018/06/28/yankees-talk-with-mets-about-their-aces-but-stare-at-another/

According to The Detroit Free Press, Yankees had scouts watching Fulmer's last start
https://www.mlb.com/news/trade-rumors-fulmer-degrom-on-yankees-radar/c-283377136

Several other sources have the team as front-runners for Happ with a smaller chance that they choose Hamels as their acquisition.

In addition to the starters, the Yankees also might look for an opportunity to improve their 1B depth while checking in on the reliever market. @jon abbey is skeptical of a big name acquisition like Hand, but it could be Cashman's way to shorten games even more in lieu of missing out on any potential top starters.

I truly don't understand the fascination with Fulmer. I just don't think he's that good. Happ sounds good, and obviously DeGrom would be incredible, if expensive.

I'm not sure if there is a fascination but he's got nasty stuff and is pretty young, plus controlled. His potential is high and his cost could be as low as it's going to be right now, unless he's a dud.

Yeah, Fulmer makes the most sense to me assuming Cashman is a fan. That would give them Severino, Fulmer and Tanaka as a top 3 going into next season, CC may or may not be back, Montgomery is out for the year, German/Loaisiga/Sheffield are still question marks, and Sonny Gray is under control for 2019 but I don't think that's guaranteed if he can't figure out how to pitch better at home.

DET loses their 10th in a row, now 36-47, that has to help Fulmer’s availability a bit.

I think Sheffield and Frazier are both close to untouchable at this point, unless someone like Blake Snell was somehow available. Those two both seem ready now, whenever they are called (with likely innings constraints the only thing holding back the just turned 22 Sheffield).

What do you do with Frazier, though? Even next year. Hicks is so underrated. We know we're losing Gardner this offseason but can you take Frazier and make him the 450ab 4th outfielder next year?

He should be in there now against lefties at least, deal with next year when we get there on this one.

if you're going after the short-term veteran, doesn't a lefty like Happ or Hamels make more sense than a righty like Richards?
I don't really care about handedness, I just want the best guy. And I like Richards better than both.

He has been really good this year aside from getting smoked by the Yankees one time this year (9 runs, 5 earned in 1.2 innings.)

Isn't he injury prone? I'm not all that fired up about Happ or Hamels.

I wonder if Torres getting injured makes it so they can't offer Andujar for deGrom or Thor.

I don't think so, Gleyber will be back after the ASB unless something changes, they said they would probably not have even put him on the DL later in the year.

All else being relatively equal on a short-term deal, BOS has had much more trouble with lefties this year (.726 OPS) as opposed to righties (.808). HOU and CLE don't have big splits. Happ had a dominant game against BOS already too in April, 7 4 1 1 0 10.

The third time this season, and also the third time ever in his career. Moustakas has gotten worse at the plate every month this season, .665 OPS in June. In other words, this makes zero sense to me even if the cost is minimal, but it has been rumored for a few days now.

Just read that, would be stunned if that happened for a bunch of reasons (and not surprised at all if they signed him this winter).

You think he's more likely than Harper? I would guess the opposite
It's really hard to guess, because NY has young guys at each position already in Andujar and Frazier. Bird also complicates things if he doesn't start hitting, because someone can move there and bump him, and also Andujar and Frazier could each be the main piece in a deal for pitching. We'll know a lot more by the end of the month, but I just don't see Cashman giving up talent for Machado now.

Let's think through a midseason Machado deal to NY for a minute: he'd have to replace Didi (unlikely since his D doesn't seem to be very good at SS) or Andujar. He'd certainly be an upgrade on Andujar, but Andujar is a rookie with a .807 OPS. I don't see BAL pulling the trigger on sending him to NY unless Andujar is in the deal, and why would Cashman send Andujar in division to punish NY for the next six years (a la E-Rod)?

So, yeah, smokescreen.

he does play line drives off second base well though - there's no defensive metric for that.

So if he sticks to his guns, that means its pretty much official he won't be a Yankee this year or in the future

Why does he care? He'll get his money and his desired position.
I don't think it's that simple, he is going from being a historically good defensive weapon at 3B to seemingly really bad at SS. Eno Sarris wrote a piece a few days ago at The Athletic (pay), "Is Manny Machado really as bad as he’s looked at shortstop?". He thinks it's SSS and noise and no one could drop off like this so quickly, but these are the numbers:

"By defensive metrics, Machado went from one of the best third baseman of his time to one of the worst shortstops on record. The sample isn’t huge, since we’ve only had these defensive metrics since 2002, but the difference really is that radical. Since the start of 2014, only two third basemen were better with the glove. By the same metric, this year’s effort at shortstop is the 11th-worst since FanGraphs started using Ultimate Zone Rating as a defensive metric in 2002."

I think that's true, I also think that it's different to switch back in the offseason as opposed to midseason. But he really does look like Jeter out there as someone said earlier, feet stuck in molasses and he was so good at third.

Garrett Richards left tonight's game with some kind of injury after his velocity was down, details to come. Happ, Hamels and Tyson Ross have all been awful the last few weeks, Cashman is going to earn his paycheck this month.

I think he's going bullpen and offense.
The only places to improve the lineup would seem to be 3B and/or 1B, both could use defensive upgrades more than offensive ones. And the bullpen would have to be a lefty to bump Shreve, as they have plenty of in-house righty options. If that is really his objective, the Machado/Britton package probably makes the most sense (assuming Machado would play 3B happily), but it seems hard to envision the teams agreeing on a fair price there.

Mad Dog on his radio show made a point that I wholeheartedly agree with. The gist of it was that Machado has a good chance to upset the apple cart in NY. The chemistry is so damn good with the young kids and you can see how impactful it is when little things change. I genuinely believe Torreyes adds something to that clubhouse that hasn't been replaced and adding a Machado could just add another huge name with added pressure to everyone. You can't quantify these things so I won't fall on my sword and say Machado would hurt this team, but its a valid concern to me considering the cost it would take to both in free agency and prospect-wise.

He would be a massive upgrade defensively (again, assuming he would happily play 3B again) and he has fantastic numbers against all the Red Sox starters. I can't say potential chemistry issues worry me in this case, is that actually based on anything specific to Machado?

No, it's just specific to re-loading the team with superstars rather than young up & comers.

He's been up a lot longer but he is a bit younger than Judge, he just turned 26 a few days ago. Supposedly he grew up idolizing A-Rod and has always wanted to play for NY, in which case he would definitely be on his best behavior for the rest of this season.

I'm not too worried about him fitting in, I am worried about who NY would send back in exchange, but in Cashman I trust.

Hahahahaha, for a rental...

Dan Federico‏ @DanJFederico 1m1 minute ago

The O's original asking price from the Yankees for Machado was Justus Sheffield, Miguel Andujar and Clint Frazier, I'm told. "I don't think Machado would get anywhere close to New York if that remains the case." My guess is Baltimore has backed off that package.

Hmm, probably. I am OK with moving Andujar and Frazier in the right deal, I really hate to move Sheffield but DeGrom is controlled through 2020, so the answer I guess is yes.

Well, it kind of is because the Yankees can grab him as a FA this winter without giving up anything (except bagsfull of yankee dinars)

Right, it's a rental because you're just paying for the remainder of this season. By all reports, he wants to play in NY in the future anyway.

C'mon, that's a tad disingenuous of you. You know as well as I do that if Machado is traded to the Yankees, it won't be a rental situation
It may not be a rental, but it isn't like they would get a discount.

Hold on to the (best) kids unless it is a deal for an elite player with years of control.

I am guessing that Cashman is offering a batch of young pitching prospects for Machado/Britton, maybe 5-6 of them, with only Sheffield off limits. Abreu, Medina, Loaisiga and a couple more, I think that would be the best offer BAL will get.

Then if that happens, you can offer a huge deal for DeGrom or Snell, the Frazier/Andujar/Sheffield deal mentioned a few posts back. It's possible that neither the Mets nor the Rays will deal those guys, but Cashman can offer a giant package (heh) if he thinks it's worth it.

Damn. That worries me. Of course I trust Cashman, but if it really is a big offer, I'd rather he push his chips into the middle of the table for a quality SP.
