Heh, Miller is 6-22 with a 7.04 ERA in 195 innings since 2016.

Cabrera sent down and increasingly looking like Gardner won't be signed, so the bench is looking like DJ, Locastro, Marwin and a second catcher.

Rortvedt may actually be ready by Opening Day, he hasn't played in a real game yet but has been throwing at 120 feet and taking ABs. That would be nice because NY would not have to clear a 40 man spot for Brantly and more importantly wouldn't run the risk of losing him when sending him back to AAA.

Marwin Gonzalez was already going to make the team, but he clinched it today. He has started 4 games this spring at 4 different positions, and is 6 for 11 with 3 HRs, including a three run shot off Aaron Nola today.

Marwin was just so bad for us last year. I cringed every time I saw him in the lineup. I was curious so I looked at his baseball reference page and, notably, his one very good year was for the 2017 Astros. That seems to suggest it was a trash-can-aided season.

All that said, I feel like it's a lock that he'll be a 2+ WAR player for the Yankees somehow.

Yeah, the most exciting thing about Marwin isn't his pretty lousy non-2017 track record, it's that three very smart GMs in MIN, BOS and HOU signed him the last two years before this one. NY has Cabrera waiting behind him in AAA if he busts.

He will have 3 good weeks which will give Boone enough ammunition to run him out there every single day for the season, sometimes in the 4 spot.

They obviously love his positional flexibility and hope he hits better than he did in 2020-21. Last year he played every position but catcher and CF: 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, RF, LF (he also DH-ed and pitched in a blowout). If he can hit like 2019 (.264/.322/.414 in 114 games with MIN) and act as an almost completely fungible position player, that's pretty valuable.

Fast forward to 5 years from now, two weeks after the next CBA negotiation concludes, "we realize that we made it harder for fans to watch baseball games and we're launching a new service that partners with multiple streaming services called MLB NOW"

Will they be on MLB.tv though? Obviously that doesn't impact anyone in the area, but I know from when I lived in DC that the PIX games were on MLB TV. But these won't be?

I wonder how this all works for bars and restaurants. Do they need a login for every tv? I bet this really effs them up. Friday crowd wants to watch baseball at a pub.

It's funny - I had Prime for years. It was up for renewal (I was paying yearly) in January and I realized that I really wasn't using it that much, so I decided not to renew and see if I missed it. It's been two plus months and I haven't missed it at all - and now this. I'll probably just ask to use my sister's login or find a stream though. Not gonna let this defeat me.

Higgy homered again his next AB, now he has 7 in 23 ABs, leading all of MLB this spring.

So now NY likely needs 2 40 man spots, for Marwin and Banuelos, maybe Ridings and Gomez both onto the 60 day IL.

Don't look now, but the weather for Thursday is pretty grim. With the built-in off day on Friday and a good forecast for the rest of the weekend, I'm betting Thursday gets postponed. Kind of brutal, but the off day on Friday would've been annoying too.

That would mess up Boston's plan to have Whitlock both as the first guy behind Eovaldi in this game as well as going behind Rich Hill in game 5 on Tuesday, so that works for me.

Who do we want starting the first game thread? I am never very good at it, Terry took Opening Day last year but lost, Crow was our best game thread person last year but lost the coin flip wild card game.

What about our old buddy who is now too professionally busy to visit us much anymore, @Brand Name ? Want to start off our title run, Jess?

Trevino caught all nine innings today and got to work a bit with 7 of the pitchers who made the team, most of the bullpen.

Hey, let’s do it! I tend to work late this week so you can expect the opening post around 11ish Wednesday.

Nice! Try to do it after midnight if you can, no rush since it looks like it will get rained out anyway.

Hope the new job’s going great!!

Works for me, always good to have some breathing room.

Thanks! And yeah, couldn’t ask for a better start. It’s fun and I genuinely do the kind of stats work I’d do here/elsewhere in the past but I get paid to do it to where it doesn’t feel like work period. Super nice coworkers.

Also cool to be in Yankees country, and not be the minority here.

NY still needs to clear a 40 man spot for Marwin, dropping Jeisson Rosario is the obvious move but not sure why they picked him up to begin with.

That gives NY 24 extra hours to finish the deal with Judge and make a move for Marwin.

I have to believe Cashman has something in the works still because otherwise there's no reason to hold off on the Marwin 40 man move.

I still say trade Chad Green if you can get something good back, just one year left, Loaisiga/Holmes/Castro for back-end righties this season and so many arms waiting their turn in the system. If the Padres can't get Taylor Rogers from MIN, Green isn't a bad fallback for them.
