Does that apply since the games are outdoors?

Tweet from Stefan Bondy (New York Daily News): Spoke to a City Hall spokesperson and the Yankees and Mets fall under the same private sector mandate as Kyrie Irving and the Nets. No difference because it's an outdoor sport. Spokesperson cautioned that things could change by Opening Day.

After reading this, I'm not sure why anyone assumed that there would be an exception. The requirement seems straightforward.

https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-vaccine-workplace-requirement.page

Workers in New York City who perform in-person work or interact with the public in the course of business must show proof that they have received a COVID-19 vaccine.

Businesses may not allow any unvaccinated workers to work at their workplace. A workplace is considered any location — including a vehicle — where you work in the presence of at least one other person.

I don't follow the NBA. Does this also apply to visiting players? Obviously it is an issue traveling to Canada. But have unvaxxed NBA players been playing in NYC?

There is an exception for visiting players. However, Kyrie as an unvaccinated employee of an NYC business is not allowed to play.

My gut says the mandate is gone by the time the season starts. It's fucking depressing that Judge is apparently willing to roll the dice on that happening though.

It's worth noting that BP has NY allowing by far the fewest runs in MLB there, 635 with MIL in 2nd at 662.

I was thinking about this yesterday. If Judge isn't vaccinated what is the timeline to get him vaxxed in time to play at home? It is 30 days between shots, right?

At a time when everyone seems to be erring on the short side of pitcher outings and worrying that their guys will have to be built up too fast, Clay Holmes pitched to 15 batters in today's spring training game. Not sure what to make of that.

Copying Tampa Bay? Holmes might be pretty nasty for two innings at the start of a game.

An early guess at Opening Day roster:

Rizzo-1B
Judge-RF
Donaldson-3B
Stanton-DH
Gallo-LF
Torres-2B
Hicks-CF
Higashioka-C
IKF-SS

Bench: Brantly or 3rd catcher TBA, Gardner (yep), Marwin, LeMahieu

IL: Rortvedt

On the 40 in AAA: Locastro, Florial, Cabrera, Peraza, Andujar, Pereira

Veterans in AAA: Ender Inciarte, Ronald Guzman, Jose Peraza

I kind of hate how old that bench is but I guess it's just a starting point for the season.

Cole
Taillon
Montgomery
Severino
Cortes

Abreu
Luetge
Rodriguez
Peralta
Holmes
Green
Loaisiga
Chapman

If the rosters are 26 to start the season (still unknown and all of those guys are healthy, NY really should trade at least 1 and give themselves some flexibility, I would maybe move 2 of Luetge/Rodriguez/Green (his final year).

IL: German, Britton

Pitchers on the 40 man in AAA: King, Schmidt, Gil, Garcia, Medina, Sears, Ridings, Marinaccio, Aybar

Non-40 man pitchers who can maybe help: Ryan Weber, Greg Weissert, Matt Krook, Manny Banuelos, Ken Waldichuk, Hayden Wesneski, Jimmy Cordero

Now that it is 28 man roster for April, add Cabrera and King, that is much better. That gives NY a few extra weeks to move relievers if they want.

You would think they would want to hang on and give a chance to a guy who has such potential
It seems like that's what they're doing, see how all the internal options actually look and then go after someone mid-season if they need.

Deivi and Schmidt looking like this the last two days is exciting, go Matt Blake and crew...

Higgy has homered off Kyle Gibson and Brad Hand today along with a single. Gotta be the starting catcher and heavy part of any platoon, right?

It’s funny because he was a disaster defensively with Severino in the first inning, two balks to the backstop (both catchable), crossups, odd pitch selection…

Unless something really weird happens, Higgy is Cole's catcher. The Yankees didn't make the moves they did and more noticeably didn't without Cole's preference in mind. Since the Yankees have gone in a defense-first direction at the position, I would not be a bit surprised if the starts come based on assignments to starting pitchers and the R/L Higgy/Rortvedt aspect comes more into play in later innings. Or, maybe one of those guys turns a corner and hits 30 bombs. That would be cool too. :)

I think that's all probably accurate except that I wonder how much of Cole/Higgy was 'I want Higgy' as opposed to 'I don't want Gary if possible', my guess is towards the latter.

NY had an open 40 man spot after losing Aybar on waivers the other day, so today they claimed one of the recent Sox DFAs, Jeisson Rosario. He is a superb athlete, a 22 year old CF, who has yet to impress much on an actual baseball field. NY doesn't really have room on their 40 man for guys who can't help this year and aren't star level prospects, so there are more moves coming here at some point, maybe NY will try to sneak him through waivers like they did Aybar and then keep him.

NY signs Shelby Miller to a minor league deal, he has been worthless since 2015 but is still just 31.
