Carpenter seems like a solid piece, a Kelley replacement. Shreve seems like he has setup man upside, he figured out new mechanics last year and had nasty numbers after that.

I am most certainly sad about this move, but it also might be the right move.

Also, I do love the fact that the Yankees are acquiring hard throwers.

Yeah, I've always loved Banuelos and hoped he could get fixed going forward. But hopefully this is the Yankees selling as high as they can on him and getting usable parts for the major league roster.

Worth noting that even though Banuelos is only 23, he only has one option year left. Also worth noting that Carpenter had a great year in 2013 with McCann catching him, not as good last year.

There goes another member of the revised Royal Flush. Was it going to be Phil Hughes, C.C. Sabathia, Delin Betances, Manny Banuelos, and Andrew Brackman that would soon dominate all of MLB and kick off the next Yankee dynasty?

Yes. Exactly. That was the opinion of every Yankees fan as well as the official stance of the front office. Man, that burn stings.

I wonder what this team would look like if Cashman had pulled the trigger on trading some of his prospects a couple years ago. Between Banuelos, Brackman, Hughes, and Joba, they all could have fetched a fairly nice haul at one point or another.

This isn't a bad trade now, just commenting on what could have been.

Seems like a huge risk for the Braves. I know you have to give him some slack going into and coming back from injury, but Banuelos hasn't been particularly good in AAA and his double-A numbers are not overwhelming. Others said he will only be 23, but it feels like he'd be ticketed for AAA with a final option and then it's sink of swim. For that lottery ticket the Braves gave up 2 guys with major league success? I'd rate this another huge win for Cashman.

Keith Law liked this move for NY:

"The Yankees are overhauling their bullpen the right way. They've only spent money on one outside reliever, Andrew Miller, a high-risk guy due to lack of track record but who was among the best in baseball in 2014, and are building the rest of their bullpen with cheaper guys to create more depth from the right and left sides. Yesterday's trade of Manny Banuelos for David Carpenter and Chasen Shreve adds to that depth.

Carpenter was one of many shrewd waiver claims by Atlanta over the last few years, coming off a terrible year in 2012 with the Blue Jays, only to provide Atlanta with two great years of relief work, 126 innings with a 2.88 FIP/2.63 ERA, for about $1 million total. Carpenter sits around 95-96 mph with an above-average slider and is particularly deadly against right-handed batters. He's now eligible for arbitration for the first time, making it the right moment for Atlanta to move him and for the Yankees to pick him up.

The more intriguing name coming to the Bronx is Shreve, who now gives the Yanks three power lefties in their bullpen along with Miller and Justin Wilson. Shreve reached the majors last year and works with an average fastball (90-93 mph) and slider, fringe-average split-change and outstanding control. He changed his approach in 2014, airing it out rather than trying to hit his spots, with much better results across the board, including better strike throwing. He's got a chance for three average pitches, and a lefty who can do that and fill up the strike zone is going to have a long career in the majors."
