There are financial benefits to NY continuing the charade that this is a contending team still worth watching. Revenue from a one game playoff, ticket sales in September, and of course the dozen or so ceremonies and events they have planned for Jeter.

He will be good for them for 2 years, solid fielder and he will hook some balls over that short porch

Would the Yankees really make him change his name? Though Steven is more posh.

Stephen is for long haired, neckbearded hippies.  Steven is a good, clean shaven, conservative name.

Honestly, I can picture Drew in pinstripes pretty easily.  He has the look.  Headley will probably end up being a pretty good move for him. He's better than he's looked this year and is an upgrade over Solarte.  It's not hard to envision a 2015 infield of Headley, Drew, Johnson and Teixeira with ARod DHing and spelling Headly and Tex regularly.  In fact, it's not hard to picture that as a fairly productive infield for them.

It's not a long term solution, but it could get them back into playoff contention next year if they also sign Lester and get even a mediocre season out of Sabathia once he's healthy again... or as close to healthy as he can get.  Tanaka coming back at the end of the year would be a nice boon as well.  At the very least, it would keep them mathematically in contention long enough to sell the idea that they are a contender to their fans and keep people watching.

A lineup of Headley, Drew, Johnson, Teix, Ells, Gardner, whatever LHH they trot out would be totally nullified by a LHP though.

As much as they made Mussina change his name's pronunciation when he signed there.

They should totally let him keep his uniform number as it is in his twitter handle: @chaseheadley7

Edit: I mean seriously the guy is dead anyway and it is his twittery.

They won't even let guys keep their beards (Headley was clean-shaven by the time he got into the dugout tonight), good luck on getting those retired numbers back.

“We noticed his hit velos have really jumped,” (Cashman) said. “And obviously his success has jumped.”

You can bet the increase in “hit velos,” or the speed of the baseball coming off Headley’s bat, was more significant to Cashman than the batting average or any other results-based numbers because it got to the heart of the matter: Headley was hitting the ball harder.

I hope Sterling dies in a fire and Headley hits many more homers for NY.

How many times has he crammed two goofball calls together because he presumably can't decide which one he likes better?

I was going to post that Headley has to be moving up NY's offseason priority list, he has been a vacuum out there, but Jack Curry beat me to it:
