Sources: #Yankees were working last night to acquire Brandon McCarthy from #DBacks for Vidal Nuno. Deal appears close.

Check that, deal is done: McCarthy to #Yankees.

McCarthy is 3-10 with Arizona with a 5.01 ERA.  131 hits allowed in just over 100 IP with 61 ER.  75 ERA+.  Not sure why Yankees would even entertain the thought of McCarthy as any possible upgrade even on Nuno.

Jon Abbey is not going to like this deal.  And I don't think he's even a huge fan of Nuno, but I agree that I can't see McCarthy being that much better.

Whitley should have been first guy out of the rotation. He's a converted reliever nearing his max limit for innings and has been horrible in his last 3 starts. I guess Nuno has more value than him.

McCarthy's FIP and xFIP are both better than his ERA. The DBacks are eating money AND the acquisition cost was Videl Nuno. This about a low cost move as you can make. I really hate to say it, but this is a pretty great deal by Cashman.

Heh, why? I'm just waking up (up late last night), but Whitley and Nuno both needed to be replaced ASAP and their remaining internal options are few and far between. One thing worth noting pointed out on Twitter is Brandon McCarthy's GB percentage this year is 54.1, Nuno's is 35.9.

Anyway, I'm in favor of pretty much any deal where they don't give up real prospects.

Nuno gave up 13 HR is 50 innings at YS. A greater GB rate is most welcome.

At least you know what you've got in McCarthy,

Besides, Cashman usually pulls off at least 2 July deals, and one is always a surprise.

ARI actually has a worse defensive efficiency than NY, but that doesn't change your point much.

Maybe not the best look at it, but AVG/SLG on ground balls:

NYY: .259/.278
AL: .248/.270
Net: .011/.008

ARI: .248/.268
NL: .239/.260
Net: .009/.008

MLB: 243/265

So you could say the two teams are approximately as much worse than their respective leagues as each other.

It's hard not to root for McCarthy, even for you guys. I read somewhere (if I find it, I'll link to it) that Arizona forced him to change the way he pitch and that the Yankees got him to go back to who he had bee previously.

Another reason the D'backs are idiotic.

Yeah, they told him he was a sinkerballer and to stop throwing the cutter. Good job, D'backs.

Why would you sign a veteran pitcher who had just figured things out and was doing well and then tell him to change his approach? That's unfathomably stupid. Obviously McCarthy knew what he was doing with the results he was getting with the A's.

That would be like signing José Bautista and telling him that he should really try focusing on hitting the ball the other way instead of pulling everything.
