Fitting.

It's sort of like he died.
For the last few months Girardi has been rolling out the corpse like "Weekend At Bernie's".

I'm struggling with any possible precedents here - anyone?  I think the O's wore a special Ripken patch on his last (retirement) day, but can't think of any others off hand....

I think it is becoming increasingly clear that after his final game, Derek is going to leave Earth and live on Mars with Doctor Manhattan.

I thought they all did this for Mariano Rivera  last year?

Right you are.

http://www.sportscollectorsdaily.com/riveras-career-countdown-measured-in-memorabilia/

"The farewell tour is all but wrapped up and as the Yankees return home for the final six regular season games, Mariano Rivera memorabilia is popping up everywhere......

...The Yanks play their final six games at home beginning this weekend against the San Francisco Giants.....

...The Yankees will begin wearing caps featuring a Rivera patch, the first time an active player has been so honored.  They’ll also begin donning jerseys with a larger Rivera commemorative patch.  You can find them on Amazon for $12.95...."

There was the Clemens 300 win patch. That was a bit different since only Clemens himself had one and he wasn't allowed to wear it. Tee hee.

I was at the game last night and the fans around me got more excited than at any other point in the game when they reversed the call at first after Jeter's dribbler to Bogaerts.  This is easily the closest thing to a cult following in sports that I've ever seen.

I wonder if we'll now see this kind of thing with Ortiz when he retires

The sound of breaking glass could be heard echoing throughout the Back Bay when the Dentist learned that the Steinbrenner boys beat him to the punch.

I love that the Yankees are in the midst of a playoff race forced, as it were, to play essentially one of the worst regular SS in baseball every day, and hitting him in the 2-hole. It's glorious.

I mean, goodness gracious!

- #19 (out of 21) qualified SS in ops  (a 77 ops+)
- #34 in WAR (espn's version)
- #27 in extra base hits
- #109 in dWAR (espn's version)

I mean, holy crap is he a bad, bad baseball player right now.  But because he's *DEREK JETER*!! they keep putting him out there day after day at the most important position in the field, and in the #2 spot in the lineup.

I was thinking he'd be more like Elijah and ascend straight to heaven on a chariot of fire.

It is worth noting that both Drew and Ryan have negative oWAR for the season currently (also ESPN's version), Drew has somehow hit even worse in NY than he did in Boston.

I have heard rumors that Jeter's has been playing with pain all season. Apparently it takes a while for the wings to sprout from the back. It must be a distraction and a partial reason for his poor play.
