WTF is the deal with copy/paste in Windows 8?

Honestly? Am I missing something?

The CTRL shortcuts don't work, the right-click doesn't work.

My windows key stopped working. I use it all the time for capturing into OneNote.  Reboot did it.

Yes, I've rebooted.

It's not just an isolated thing: MOTHERFUCK--I just tried to copy/paste a link. I can copy, right click and COPY it, but when I come here and right-click, PASTE is grayed out.

CTRL-V does nothing. It's frustrating.

I've never had this issue with Win8 either... What app/site are you trying to copy/paste to/from? Occasionally, a key (often Shift or Alt) gets stuck in down position due to crumbs and such but you can't tell. Turn off computer, run your hand over the entire keyboard, pressing all keys, turn back on.

It could be security software preventing the reading of the clipboard. Either way, I'd do whatever the windows 8 equivalent is of a selective startup/clean boot and then start enabling services/programs one at a time until paste breaks again.

Smells like a security thing, though.

I can't copy and paste in Windows 7 like I used to be able to on my old machine in XP which I just replaced.

However- if I start a quote "bubble" I can paste into it, and then deleting the quote part leaves the pasted text. If that makes sense. Still a PITA though.

So Windows has weird things happen every so often and when they do, I generally try to run a search on it because I find I'm not the only person with this problem.

Are you saying that you can't copy and paste from anything or just a browser?

If the latter, there was this advice given on the web:

"After a lot of research, I noticed that my paste issue only occurred when I had my browser running. It transpired, that is was when any browser (Firefox, Safari, IE, etc) was running.

Long story short, it was my Webroot security software blocking some of my programs which were attempting to read the Clipboard.

It makes sense, I have a browser open so I wouldn't want an untrusted application gaining access to my clipboard as it may contain a password. I just hadn't realized that it was doing this. When I disabled the Protect Clipboard Data option, everything worked again.

Webroot prompted me to disallow / allow a particular program to access the clipboard, with an option to remember my choice. So, I gave certain programs permission and then switched the protection option back on, as I think that it is a great feature.

I would guess that other security suites use this methodology so if you are experiencing paste issues, you may find it beneficial to check your security suites settings.

It's a brand new laptop, so it's not crumbs.

I mostly use it for web surfing. So, for instance, if I wanted to paste a link to something in SoSH, I could highlight it, right-click and COPY, but when I came back to this tab to paste it, PASTE would be grayed out and if I used CTRL-V nothing would appear.

When I get home later I'll try that Protect Clipboard Data option. Seems like that could be it.

I looked it up and have seen some posts about things in Metro apps having copy/paste issues with URLs. Are you using the metro version of the browser or the desktop version?

Have you tried with non-URLs?

EDIT: This post had a possible interesting idea about memory and clipboard. Two questions: are you running Win8 64-bit? How much RAM do you have?

I know SoSH doesn't play well with IE 11 if you're using that. It helps to add it to the compatibility view settings. Open IE on the desktop, click the gear, select Compatibility View settings and add "sonsofsamhorn.net" to the list. That might fix it.
