Lots of them are children. We complain about baseball losing its young fans, but Citi Field was full of them tonight. Anyway those kids don't remember 1986 either.
agree with this. there were tons of kids there tonight, which is a) good for baseball and b) debunks the kids can't stay up for the playoffs myth.

There is no way the Royals will score enough runs tonight to win the Series

Yeah after watching it again, I agree with you.  It was the wrong choice but it isn't like it made no sense that a player in his position would be going hard toward the next bag.  Ultimately, its shit luck for the Mets.
Disagree. If you stay put and it's the wrong read, at least there's the possibility that the batter beats the relay or they don't execute the turn. As we saw, taking off and being wrong is a guaranteed game-ender.

Matz has great stuff but he peters out around the fifth. On paper the Mets have the advantage but i can see Chris young having a 5 ip 2 er kind of performance as the Mets swing at his slop. Hoping they learn from their game one performance against him. Would be nice is Cespedes gets a hit with men on, too. If he's not too busy.

I can see terry wanting five from matz and than 1-2 innings from niese with colon in between against righties if needed. Will be interesting to see the royals against two lefties tonight, possibly. these two can buy 6-7 innings as they bridge to familia. If one of them fails this game, and series, is over.

As for kc i am sure Yost has the same idea. 5 ip and then pen. I wonder how long can wade davis go tonight? 2 ip?
This was very prescient.

The Mets have lost two games in which they have handed their previously untouchable closer a lead.  If they had won one off them, we'd have a series; if they had won them both, they'd be on the brink of a championship.  I expect Harvey to pitch a great game and at least get this series back to KC.  Then it will be up to deGrom to extend this to a Game 7.

I'd like another week of WS game followed by WS game followed by TNF.

OK, so it's November 1. Feliz Dia de los Muertos, sans-culottes Mets fans.

(Thanks for the NYT article link, ITP. Lester Young was nicknamed "Pres," but he said that before he became the Pres, the real first Pres was Coleman Hawkins.)

Cespedes and Murphy really ran a good long con on Mets fans leading up to this game.
One of the guys who works for me is an almost delusionally insane Mets fan and we engage in a lot of mock-serious fan banter about baseball.

In September, he was telling me how Cespedes was the perfect superstar for New York and how he honestly thought that Cespedes would sign for less to stay in NY because it's the biggest market, the fans love him, the team is going to be a winner for a long time, etc., etc., etc.

When he finished his wish casting, he asked "How could the Red Sox ever let Cespedes go?"

I told him that despite his hot start with the Mets, Cespedes is not the next great superstar-in-waiting. He's a good-to-very good offensive player with a lot of power and while he has a cannon for an arm, he's a bad outfielder. He also has a contract explicitly structured to forbid arbitration, which ensured that he would get traded a lot with free agency looming. And I woud not sign him to the megabucks deal he will seek because he is fool's gold.

He spent a good part of August and September laughing at me because of this. I will remind of this conversation on Monday.

Reds, first of all, I envy you for having baseball fan(s) around you who are passionate about baseball. I live in CA, South Bay, Santa Clara Valley, which "belongs" to the Giants, and I never run into a fan who gives more than 2/3 of a rats ass about his team. You see plenty of people wearing Giants hats or WS champion T-shirts or hoodies, but if you talk to them, it's just, yes, I like the Giants OK. That's one thing I miss about the East Coast, along with the food, i.e., the fan fervor.

As for Cespedes, it's too bad he didn't stay in Oakland. He was really, really popular there and seemed to flourish better than he will anywhere else. He seems destined to be a journeyman hired bat now with a weird set of fielding skills/non skills and numbskull tendencies.

When he pitched a lot better than he did this year with the Mets?
He's been pretty good in the post season: 1.25 WHIP, 2.25 ERA and excellent command of his pitches. With Boston, before he screwed himself into the ground hitting, he was OK but as I recall, he was just another guy.

Yes, being an error would be a requirement for showing up on a list of most costly errors.
Interesting though, looking at the gif, the guy made the point that Buckner beating Mookie to the bag at that point was not a given anyway.

Ah, the life of an outfielder. As long as you don't touch the ball, you can't commit an error, or, like Dave Henderson, you don't get charged with an error while helping a ball over the fence for a HR.

In 7 starts his ERA+ was 119. That was really the start of his rebirth, though it appeared teams were skittish about relying on him until the Yankees and Athletics did, and injuries derailed him when he was given a shot; he's been bad with the Mets ERA-wise in the regular season (though has given them a lot of innings), but with a nice postseason. That 2008 team could have used Colon with Buchholz buchholzing, and Paul Byrd being Paul Byrd. Home field advantage would have been nice in the ALCS, but Colon obviously couldn't stay healthy, and it wasn't until 2010 that he got the stem cell treatment.

Wow. This is where as a manager you tell the guy you want to keep him rested for when it's a high-leverage situation. Or not.

Out or no out, If that ball stays in the infield, the winning run doesn't score.

Fuck, I hate that people still don't understand that play 29 years later. Some people think it was in Game 7, FFS.

For me, the worst thing was Stanley's WP that tied the score, but after the second out in that inning, it was one, long, slow train wreck.

The rain out the next day helped a bit. Too bad Hurst didn't have enough in the tank for game 7 on short rest. They built a 3-0 lead in that one too.

How about we stop turning the possibility of karmic justice in this WS into a replay of our pain from 1986?
Don't look back to the days of yesteryear,
You cannot live on in the past,
Don't look back.

And if I could call back all those days of yesteryear,
I would never grow old and I'd never be poor,
But darlin', those days are gone, oh yeah.

only two questions remain --

1. who will be the new blue blood?
2. who will be the great white hope?

OK- and sorry for the on-topic post-

Everybody keeps talking about how the Royals' hitters adapt eventually to different ways of pitching them, and I think there's some truth to that, but man, in Game 7 last year, when MadBum came in, they were swinging at everything and he knew it. Blows my mind that pretty much the whole team started swinging at everything. I suppose it's just that he had gotten in their heads, and as a smart pitcher, took full advantage of it.

They seem to be a tougher group this year, more experienced, and yeah, a bit of luck isn't hurting them one bit- they're taking full advantage of those breaks.

I rooted hard for the Royals last year even though I really like the Giants.  I have been rooting for the Mets this year even though I really like the Royals. As the post-season has gone on, the style of the Royals offense, the nibbling to death by ducks approach, has really struck my fancy. Also, glasspusher, Bumgarner is a really tough cookie. The Mets pitchers are good, but they don't have his stamina. Not only did the Royals learn from last year, but also the line-up has been lengthened by the addition of Zobrist and Rios.

I know we should root for seven games, but I don't think we'll get them. Novel-reading season is already underway, so the end of baseball will be tolerable. Once the sun starts setting before five, it's lovely to go to bed early.

If the Mets win tonight then I think they'll end up taking home the trophy. They'll have their ace going in Game 6 and I like Syndergaard over Ventura in a potential 7 with all hands on deck, including Harvey apparently, ready to chip in.

I am making a tart apple pie and getting it in the oven before the game starts.

Mmm...pie.
Please don't do that, now I am thinking of making a pear tart, and I have to defrost the pears. If you are going to mention pie in game threads, there should be a rule that it's not within an hour of the beginning of the game!!!

I love Tony Bennett a ton. However this is not one of his best.  Although he is freaking amazing live.
