Perusing Baseball Referencing, this was not an unusual occurrence in the 60s and 70s:

1979, 1975, 1972, 1971, 1968, 1967, 1965, 1962

1973 broke a string of Game 7 road victories, in fact. (Dodgers won 1963 at home),

You mean the Cardinals in 64?

The Red Sox are the current World Series champions. Just needed to say that one more time.

A summary of Cameron's prediction for pitching tonight. Read the article for details and subtleties (sorry if this has already been posted somewhere):

Royals:

Guthrie: innings 1 & 2 (max 9 batters)
Herrera: innings 3 & 4
Davis: innings 5 & 6
Shields: inning 7
Holland: innings 8 & 9 (& 10 if necessary)

Duffy, Finnegan and Frasor: mix & match, but Shields starts a clean inning (7th) no matter what, if used
Vargas: extra innings

Giants:

Hudson: innings 1, 2 & 3 (12 batters max)
Bumgarner: innings 4 & 5
Affeldt / Romo / Lopez / Casilla: innings 6, 7, 8 & 9 (Cassilla 10 if necessary)
Petit / Lincecum: available to pitch for Hudson if he shits a brick - preferably start of 3rd

Otherwise Lincecum / Petit for extra innings

It would be fucking awesome if Yost went all in and started the game off with his bullpen.

One of my favorite baseball phrases is that "Johnny Wholestaff" is available for Game 7. (dont know when or where I heard it; some TV announcer a long time ago.)

Cameron's prediction is kinda silly.  If Guthrie and Hudson are dealing, why would they be pulled in the 3rd or 4th?  Have guys ready to go, sure, but don't just pull your starter.

I didn't read his article but I assume the starters aren't going to get a chance to work out of a jam which usually happens around the 3rd or 4th.

This game has huge implications for roster management going forward. Either Yost rides to victory on the back of his big three bullpen arms for multiple innings, or they collapse under the weight of over-use and overexposure. The story writes itself either way, and if it's successful, look for every two-bit GM in baseball to start pushing hard for an All Star bullpen. Andrew Miller has millions of dollars sitting on tonight's outcome.

He doesn't want Guthrie to face batters more than once.

He doesn't want Hudson to face Hosmer more than once.

I assume if they're dealing - you leave it be.

Or, if they're hit hard in the first inning - you adjust.

If Guthrie gets into a jam, don't fuck around...bring in Herrera.

For Hudson jammed up, bring in either Lopez (for one batter) or Petit/Lincecum...but try to get through the 5th with Hudson and Bumgarner before using the 4 relievers.

So the fact that the Royals got to Game 7 of the World Series isn't enough to make a lockdown bullpen the trend of this off-season?  I certainly think it is.

Bunch of recent if somewhat counterintuitive research that suggests in-game performance is a poor metric for predicting future performance within the same game.

If you have stellar shutdown bullpen guys, you should probably plan on using them regardless of what your starter does.

I get that but in the case of Davis and Holland you're asking them to get more than three outs, which is something they may not be comfortable doing.   That often does not end well.  If your starter is giving you shutout innings, you should ride him for as long as you can as long as you get the pen up at the first sign of trouble.

What if the first sign of trouble is a 2-out walk on a 3-2 count, followed by a HR on the next pitch?

This is where I am, too.  Absolutely plan to use HDH for the ninth, eighth and seventh, but I think the assumption that you can trot all of them out for multiple innings is a bit much.  For one thing, it ignores the fact that most relievers -- and particularly set-up men and closers -- are not accustomed to pitching, then sitting on the bench for a while, then pitching again.

Yost has been quoted as saying that Davis in particular doesn't like pitching more than one inning. That seems like a shame, since he's so effective, but there you are.

Gaelgirl is making me feel unfriendly for rooting against her interests, as her feelings are so engaged. Actually, I won't be miserable if the Giants win, but the Royals are a better story right now.

A friend of mine sent me a pic of Pete Rose in Vegas a few days ago. Pete was picking the Giants. Though I have to recognize he has a lot more experience gambling on baseball than I do, I 'm picking the Royals. I liked the way they responded last night, and think (and hope) they will ride a wave of momentum in this one. That being said, Big Game Madison Bumgarner clearly has the potential to pull a Pedro 99, and shut KC down for many innings. That's the scenario I fear most.
Yet, I don't fear at all. I like both teams well enough, and it's been a pleasure watching good playoff baseball without the shall we say stress that comes with the Sox. Last year was a happy dream. This year has allowed me to appreciate the game in a more detached way.
Most people I talk to about it have also enjoyed these playoffs. Maybe having big markets involved isn't all that important for MLB to be successful.

I looked up Pedro's pitching in 1999 and he pitched every three days! Not really, brother Ramon pitched in game 3. I remembered that Ramon pitched for the Sox, but not that he pitched in the playoffs. Brett Saberhagen, WS MVP in 1985 for the Royals, started game 2 for Boston.

I absolutely love this part of tonight. Love seeing guys like him and Peavy get rewarded after years of irrelevance/close but not quite.
Hudson was in the playoffs six or seven different seasons before this and didn't do particularly well.  Why are we supposed to have so much sympathy for him?  He ain't Ernie Banks.

My head is telling me that I should want the Red Sox to still have the most rings this century after tonight and that I should be rooting for the Royals. But unlike most people on this thread I just don't have that warm, fuzzy feeling for them. Maybe it's because Ned Yost had to call out the fans in late August and September for lack of support and now they're all on the bandwagon, or maybe because I hated it when the Sox had to play them on the carpet in KC in the late '70's and usually beat them, but I just can't root for them to win. Couple that with the fact that the Giants had their AA team in Norwich Connecticut for a few years and I got to see Bumgarner, the Panda, Ishikawa, Crawford and Romo  play in the Eastern League, and that the Giants have two former Red Sox World Champions in Jake Peavy and Javeir Lopez, and it's go Giants for me.

Especially Hudson.  The guy is a terrific pitcher still.

I really want to see the royals win on a walkoff bunt. Just to see all the sports writers reactions.

Boy was it inspiring to hear Ned Yost talking about hitting rocks with a stick in his backyard; this clambrain is going to win a World Series, are you shitting me?

I predict Michael Morse will have a big hit in the middle innings but the Royals pull it out late.

I just want it to last at least five hours.

I'm pulling for the Royals tonight FWIW but I'm pretty sure I'm not in charge of such things.

The cradle of the game.
I fully expect a KC laugher, but would not be surprised if one of the vaunted KC relievers gets shelled too. Hope it's close.

Either way, it kinda sucks for 2 reasons: official end of Sox reign, and no more baseball.

You don't recall him and Danny AInge hanging out? More importantly, you don't recall putrid members of the Sox organization questioning his toughness because of his being a Mormon?

I just think it's cool that Game 7 is being started by a guy who has waited 15 years just to get out of the first round

Not to mention that Hurst said one of the highlights of his career was striking out Ainge when he was a Blue Jay.
