Man if you like football and football this is a pretty damn good day.

We start, again at 5 am, with Cameroon playing Switzerland. Cameroon has fallen quite a bit from the early 2000s when they were a very dangerous squad, usually sitting just outside the top 10 in the world. They now find themselves underdogs to a battle-tested Swiss team that kicked France out of the Euros, then won their group in UEFA qualifying, knocking Italy into the playoffs where they failed to qualify. They may lack superstars but their squad plays all over Europe (and MLS!). Cameroon has a shot though, and in a group without a clear #2 after Brazil, that might be enough.

At 8 am we get Uruguay versus South Korea and the greatest player in the world--Son Hueng-min. I see this group as wide open--Portugal and Uruguay are the favorites, but no team is just "happy to be here" and this is a fun matchup. Uruguay rates as a favorite in this game (-145) but if Son is good to go, he possesses the brilliance to make things happen with the slightest opening.

At 11 we get Portugal vs. Ghana and honestly, I hope Ronaldo takes a nutshot and staggers off the field. I may have fibbed a bit earlier, Ghana would be pretty surprising to come out of this group but I don't even wanna watch this game on the off chance Ronaldo scores and does something stupid.

The last game of the day gives us the tourney favorite Brazil against Serbia. For Serbia to have any chance Aleksandar Mitrovic needs to be on his game. He doesn't figure to get many chances so when they appear he needs to put them away. You know all about Brazil...they've won 7 straight games and haven't lost in their last 15 and if Neymar and Richarlison and Jesus and Vinicius and all the others are in sync they'll be hard to stop.

Mitrovic is the second best striker on that team. I actually like Serbia’s chances to advance assuming they can show some resilience after tomorrows game.

Illic, Milinkovic Savic, and Tadic is a formidable midfield and if Vlahovic and Mitrovic get their chances they’ll convert.

I like this day

clear rooting interest for me in all 4 games and doubtful we’ll get 0-0 games in at least 3 of them

This is some shitty bias.

With the decline of Messi and Ronaldo, there's a lot of debate right now, but the world's greatest player can currently be seen captaining his country vs. Cameron

Switzerland looks marginally better than Cameroon, but Cameroon looks like they could definitely convert one of these counters.

The Uruguay anthem has it all really. Long skippy intro, the vocals come in strong, and it finishes with a bang.

One of the best anthems going.

Is it just me, or does South Korea’s red jersey work poorly for TV viewing as did the Netherlands? My eyes are getting older, so I’m curious.
The uniforms definitely pop.

If you are looking quickly, they do look like CGI due to the extreme redness.

Uruguay deciding to go vertical today much earlier than other sides have so far against a full-field press

Korea doesn’t have enough to show for their control of the game. Son too isolated.

He showed up on the right flank where that last possession was, wonder if he’s trying to play more of a free role on offense now

That move to Hwang was delightful, not so much the finish.

I’m also liking Donovan more on color for this match. Hopefully he’s settling in a bit.

This is something that could be fun for a "side thread".

Which anthems do we like? What are the quirksin some anthems?

Anyone up for this?

Son's first touches in a threatening area with a look at goal. He's gotta shoot there.

Edit: Love that the ref and the VAR crew are holding a higher standard for fouls. That was a weak penalty claim.

Mobile sports betting went live in Maryland yesterday so I went a little crazy with WC wagers. Bet on draw for Canada Belgium so hoping to recoup on a Uruguay win today.

I started off strong but am taking a bath the last few days. I might just put all on England to guarantee a US point.

Uruguay knocked both players over on that break, surprised neither was a whistle.

Then both teams nearly win it.

I know that games can be plenty exciting without goals. Still, four already and the first match day is not over.

Please tell me that Korea was playing for a tie.
A tie is ok for them here, but it keeps the group wide open. Ghana is a wild card since they added so many talented dual national players just in the last few months. They could be a serious spoiler for each of the other 3 teams…of Ghana could be a disorganized mess that all 3 other teams boss around. We’ll see.

Ghana did beat Switzerland in a friendly last week, to the extent we put much stock in that.

Plus they will be looking for revenge for that quarterfinal match loss to Suarez`s handball. Beating an Uruguay side that may need the win to advance may be so sweet for them.

They weren’t. I didn’t see the last half hour but they were the aggressors from what I saw earlier. I’ve seen a little bit at least of most games and I see most underdogs going for it. First game too soon to play for a draw. There was just the lack of cutting edge in this game.
A couple of missed pens that would have avoided a 0-0.
