I was just thinking the same thing re: rooting for Mexico, but between Brazil's floppiness and bitchiness, and Ochoa being a stud, I'm solidly pro-MEX right now

Mexico have played like lions tonight, who would have thunk a bunch of Americans would be cheering on Mexico?

It's because we will project US performance based on this. :)

Yep. That was a hell of a 0-0. And we need Hulk back. Or maybe 2002 Ronaldo.

Mexico's disallowed goals against Cameroon will come back to bite them in the ass. If Brazil and Mexico win next week by the same GD, Brazil wins the group.

They'll get skewered in the press but 0-0 is not a bad result for Brazil in the big picture if that's how this ends.  It pretty much sews up the group for them.
Don't you think the Brazilians are going nuts right now that they can't score against a team that barely qualified?

I'm sure Mexico will take advancing out of the group without too much bitching.

That was just an exceptional match, especially the no-call in the penalty box in the last few minutes.

Mexico earned that point in just about the hardest way possible.  I don't think Mexicans have been hit by a bombardment that intense since San Jacinto.

We have no idea who finishes where in Group B...Chile, Netherlands, Spain(alphabetical) should be somewhere in 1-2-3 and i think Mexico will take anyone, after playing Brazil to a draw and seeing their keeper in great form.

Can't imagine Panama taking 4 points in the same position as Mexico.

I kind of enjoy watching other teams play Honduras. Now they get a taste of some of the BS we have to deal with in CONCACAF.

Christian Atsu (Ghana) might not crack the Chelsea lineup but he'll have a bigger loan market for next season.

I would say Thomas Mueller, but that guy already got paid.

Of course not, but Panama's not here.

USA v. Ghana, Mexico v. Brazil, and Costa Rica v. Uruguay are all results that beat general expectations (~draw, loss, and loss respectively) and reflect well on the region.

I was just coming here to post ¡CONCACAF SÍ!  ¡CAF y AFC, NO!

Our Honduran friends aside, CONCACAF is so far the best of the "other" confederations.  That doesn't mean much, and it may not continue, but it might help put a damper on the blather about CONCACAF losing a spot.

So by my math, Brazil would be out if Cameroon beats Croatia and then Brazil, provided Mexico also beats or draws Croatia.

  Hey!

Sad but true, and this is a Mexican team that barely made it, and pulled out a win in the final minutes playing in Azteca Stadium vs. Panama in qualifying.

But Ochoa was a beast.  As good as Penedo is (you may know him as the keeper for LA Galaxy) he does not make half of those saves.

The attractive Russian blonde wearing the navy hat is aware that Odessa is not in Russia (yet) right?

Man, Russia easily has a top 5 national anthem. I always want to fight some Germans after it.

Edit: left out important words.

The fact that Ochoa is their #2 is a testament to the state of Mexican goal keeping (no idea where the aforementioned Peneda stands in the pecking order). I told my brother yesterday that Mexico easily held the advantage in goal keeping against Brasil. That paid HUGE dividends today.

Ochoa's performance was one for the ages. After the game, my mom's sisters were texting each other pictures with Ochoa's face Photoshopped onto Jesus' body and into the middle of the Mexican flag. Those are big no no's in Mexico but he was THAT important today.

Ochoa is a bit of a strange case, no?  Childhood phenom and thought of as the next big thing, then was the back up to Perez 4 years ago.  I always thought he was a good keeper but was surprised when Ajaccio was the only team to show interest in him.

He picked the right time to be a free agent though...

According to the Guardian, the Argentine FA profile page for referee's assistant Pablo Hernán Maidana lists one of his main goals as becoming an International Wizard.

I hope someone will be able to explain the differences between a wizard and an International Wizard to me.

An international wizard knows how to say "abracadabra" in multiple languages.

Definitely. He's gone from golden boy to forgotten to national hero. Corona is a really good keeper and he became a national hero because of his performance in the Olympics. But there's no way he hasn't been Wally Pipped by Ochoa.

It's kind of an unfortunate position in which to have such an embarrassment of riches. Everyone would prefer to have multiple top shelf midfielders. Though I'm sure Spain would commit genocide to have someone of Ochoa's caliber as a backup.
