This opening round is nuts.

Edit: conspiracy me says something is amiss with these results, but I've yet to see anything that indicates any lack of effort from the traditional powerhouse teams. And more still, it just seems like the the 'underdogs' are outplaying their Euro (and Argentine) counterparts.

Germany’s last 2 WC matches:

Korea 2-0 Germany

Japan 2-1 Germany so far….

who’s sleeping on the AFC now?

The USMNT warm-up results against Japan and KSA are looking a lot more reasonable all of a sudden.

I keep thinking about the incredible saves by Japan’s keeper a few minutes before the game was tied. Astounding how that one sequence changed the game and maybe the entire group.

I don't mind at all. TIme wasting's been an issue for a while. I've been in the camp who tends to feel that there hasn't been enough added time in the main and it gets exploited by the more savvy sides.

This way we get more game time. Mare actual fitbaw.

It was looking in the first half like he might be the goat for giving up that stupid PK, now he's looking like the GOAT.

Broadcasters here in Panama aren't even bothering to put the game time up on screen. Every now and then they'll randomly throw up the time.

At 8 am we have Germany taking on Japan as the Axis Powers go head to head. I'd expect Germany to pull away in this game, but Argentina/Saudi Arabia say "Not so fast my friend...". For pure chaos, I'd love a draw here, but I don't see it.
Told you I didn't see a draw!!

Is it me, or is the World Cup little intro theme also the first few notes of “And then he kissed me”?

As time wasting during the match decreases the additional time will drop back to levels we’re used to.

There’s really nothing like the World Cup. Germany was wasteful, the 2 Japanese goals were clinical, and now just like WW2, Japan is the last Axis power standing

Why?

Time wasting has been a plague on the sport. Great to see it finally addressed.

Edit: Just a great effort/victory for Japan.
Generally agree. I used to think that the referee was accurately adding it back, but was that not the case?
Any internet mavens out there tracking the actual down time to see how the referee's time compares? I'd love to see a comparison between say, an average EPL game and the 7 minutes we just had.

Japan have played a disciplined, successful brand of soccer in international tournaments for a long time now.
