Quick perusal of a couple of stories and the consensus is that Uruguay got screwed on the Cavani no-call. What say youze?
The one at like 93'? I would be furious if that were given against my team, which means it's probably given 30% of the time in the EPL.

OK. I was building in a level of skepticism appropriate to Cavani and Uruguay but wanted to take the pulse, so to speak.

(I'm on record that I love Cavani BTW).

Obrigado

Want to ensure that Cameroon advances but Brazil still avoids their colonizers.
We don't mind Portugal, no hard feelings. The reason why we wouldn't want to play them is that, with everything that has happened in the group stage, that side of the bracket is way harder now.

Fun to watch, but one thing I will not miss as they go to 48 teams next time is the already-clinched team half-assing it in their third game. France, Portugal, probably Brazil this afternoon losing a game they almost certainly win in other circumstances.
This is inevitable in WC Groups. France a few days ago vs Tunisia (which did not affect the standing either way but still).

Also when two teams with 6 points each meet on the 3rd match day (thankfully did not happen this time around but in 2018 England met Belgium a¡in what should have been a great match)

Brazil is fielding its reserves vs Cameroon but 1st place mostly locked up.

If Cameroon wins and Serbia wins, does Brazil still get the 1st spot?
Absolutely, they both have 1 point and Brazil has 6.

Only if Switzerkand beats Serbia and Cameroon beats Brazil AND they make up the GD does Switzerland win the group

Dempsey just said he thought it was a penalty. It was funny -- it wasn't even shown in the Fox highlights and Clint said he wishes it was in the highlights because he thought that, based on the penalty awarded to Ghana, a penalty should have been awarded to Uruguay.

Brazil isn't going to lollygag. Our reserves are amazing and, specially up-front, they will be looking to show work.

Nunez was fouled in the box in the 57th minute. Ref didn’t award the penalty even after he was told to halt the game and look at the screen. Could have made it 3-0 at the time.

Any reports coming out as to what the players were screaming at the referee?

Yeah, pretty rare to see the ref get called over by VAR and to not award the penalty.

I was reading the protocols for VAR and that's entirely how it is supposed to work. Basically, the VAR gives the ref a chance to determine "whoa, that's not what I thought I saw," but where the ref is like "yeah, that's what I saw and I called what I called," then good on him or her if they have the guts to stick with the call.

Yeah, I was in meeting and just saw that. That would have been an exceedingly soft penalty to award. I doubt that would be a foul most places on the field.

Yeah, that Brazilian B-team could be a starting XI for 3/4 of the other teams.

Would Tite use the opportunity to also try out different tactics or formations?
Probably, but with a complete reserve team it wouldn't be very informative. The tactics may work for these players but not for the starters.

Asia sending more to the Round of 16 than CONMEBOL.
Just staggering.
Zorro dropping the dime!
[insert clappy emoji]

Ghana's defense can clearly not be trusted here.
They were bad.

No idea how people can see these players crying exhausted and not get how fucking important International competition is to the players. Club football is great, but International football means so fucking much.

OK. Nice to know I’m not alone here. yer-agh-way/uhr-ahg-why is my offsides/offside.
+1

That South Korean player flexing after the goal will probably be iconic for South Korean sports. What a moment for him.
That was legit

You're not aware of what happened in 2010 between these two teams?

Uruguay and Ghana played in the World Cup Quarterfinals, Ghana trying to be the first African team to make the World Cup semis, in the first-ever world cup held in Africa.

Through one of the most unsportsmanlike and palpably unfair acts in sports history, Luis Suarez prevented a late Ghana winner by clearing a ball off the goal line with his hands, took a red card, his goalie saved the subsequent penalty kick, and then Uruguay managed to end up winning on penalty kicks. They've waited 12 years for this rematch. I imagine they kinda felt like the Count of Monte Cristo, certainly a bunch of the fans did.
[Takes deep breath] Look, what Suarez did...jk, I've said my peace on this.

Here's the call from South Korea

Also, I was in meeting, was there a VAR check? It was close.

I AM ONE HAPPPY MOFO RIGHT NOW.

Especially to avenge Suarez's goal that knocked us out in the knockout stage in 2010. That was also the last time SK advanced to the round of 16.

Of course, Uruguay beat Ghana in the quarters right after that. Both Ghana and SK fans are celebrating Uruguay getting knocked out.

This is nearly the exact way our department club team at Tulane lost the campus intramural championship game, minus Luis Suarez.

Def I would rather play Croatia than Brazil or 'tina. So I like Japan's chances the best.
From what I've seen, Japan's a much stronger side than the Aussies or Korea. I haven't watched all 9 matches though.

OK. I was building in a level of skepticism appropriate to Cavani and Uruguay but wanted to take the pulse, so to speak.

I thought it wasn't a full flop--there was contact--but he was trying to draw the pen. In those cases, it's definitely a gray area and it's hard to be objective. I say right call not to award the pen, but I think it would've been fair to award it as well.

Happened with the Dutch and Argentina in 2006 too. They played a competitive first half and then packed it in. I was at this game, and it wasn't nearly as much fun as the 6-0 vs. Serbia!

That's a fair point TBH.

And Brazil has the Goals Scored and head-to-head tie-breaks.
Gotta play for the bye straight into the R16, right @Saints Rest @InstaFace ?

THROW THE FUCKING BALL, THE RUNNING GAME SUCKS!

Late, but just want to share how happy I am to walk the planet at the same time as Heung-Min Son.
Son was getting shit from some local fans. He obviously isn't up to his usual form but I never understood criticizing him.

To be honest, I didn't much hope after learning that Kim Minjae wouldn't play tonight. What an effort to keep Portugal to just a single goal.

To me, it looks like Cavani curves into the Ghana defender drawing the contact unnecessarily and then diving. Looked like he was trying to draw the foul, not to score.

What happened? I was on a call. Bums me out that Uruguay and Belgium aren't advancing. Two very talented teams that can't quite out their shit together.
Basically multiple players yelling at the refs post game and using their hands to slow them down from leaving the field.

Not gonna lie, this set of 2:00 games doesn't do much for me. Maybe I'm football'd out ahead of tomorrow.

I keep having to catch myself, expecting to see Switzerland in red and Serbia in white, instead of the opposite colors they’re wearing tonight.

I cannot help but project feelings about certain countries when I watch. I actibely hate Serbians, for example. Germans too.
