California. Duh.
VAR just gave France a penalty and it ended up being a second yellow card for the defender on top of it.

Good review, didn't look like one until the replay showed the attacker getting her plant leg kicked out from under her.

It was 6.5 minutes between the initial penalty incident and France scoring on the second penalty attempt, so we get 8 minutes of stoppage time.

And finally France score off the re-take.
Calling the keeper for being barely off the line but not the taker for that stop & start run up...VAR is making messes.

Quite a tournament for Renard so far: 2 goals with her head in game 1, and own goal in game 2, and then a penalty miss but then makes on VAR reprieve. She a handball in the box away from bingo.

Watching the highlights from this afternoon now.

Majri, the French LB, has an absolute cannon shot. Worthy of a top-team's striker, and she's on defense. Marcelo-esque.

Also, I didn't think the goalie's foot was off the line on the first (missed) take, so I think Nigeria got super screwed here. Renard can stutter-step, but woe betide the keeper fooled by the supposedly-illegal shenanigans? C'mon. I root for offense, but that's a travesty. And cost Nigeria a point, which would have given them certainty of advancing.

That's one of the rules changing next season right? The keeper can have one foot off the line I believe.

Australia with a goal from Sam Kerr to go up 1-0 on the Reggae Girlz, and move ahead of Brazil, who is currently in a 0-0 draw with Italy. Three top 15 squads in this group.

Best I can tell, all 3 from this group should go on, but each team will want to win to jockey for seeding.

But after the restart, Jamaica comes out guns blazing, They just put in their first ever World Cup goal and look poised for another.

Edit: Kerr picks up the first hat trick ever by an Aussie - man or woman - at a World Cup. Jamaica looked feisty for the first 15 minutes of the half, but this one looks to have salted it away for the Matildas.

Marta is pretty cool, in a completely kick ass way.

I don't know why but I used to not like her. I guess thinking about maybe her world cup career now possibly coming down to a knock out situation makes it easier to appreciate her.

Looks like France-Brazil in the Round of 16, which should be fun to watch. And whoever survives likely has the U.S. in the quarters. That's going to be a tough side of the bracket.

3-way tie at 6 points in Group C. Australia needed every single of their 4 goals against Jamaica to edge ahead of Brazil on the 2nd tiebreaker (goals) and get a winnable R16 match vs Norway (and then England/Japan in QF), and avoid Brazil's fate in facing France in R16. Meanwhile, group winners Italy get a 3rd place team (China or Nigeria).

There's still a narrow path for Brazil to end up against Germany in the R16, but it would probably require a draw between Argentina and Scotland tomorrow.

If you're France, you probably don't love (most likely) having to face Brazil in R16. They're not as good as they have been, but they are still fast and dangerous and Marta can still be a force. She could well just throw them on her back and drag them to an unlikely win - she is still that good. I don't see Brazil keeping France's attack at bay, though, so they will need to score. I'm looking forward to that game. All of the pressure will been France, and it'll be a different type than that of the group stages, where there was so little chance of them not going through. If they play tight, there will be trouble. If you're a fan of France's side, you are begging for an early score to turn that pressure around right away.

Australia vs. Norway seems a battle of the "eh" teams so far, at least as far as sides we thought would be really exciting to watch. They have both looked super inspiring at times, and then not at all inspiring at times. Norway was utterly boring against the Koreans, though they dismantled Nigeria, which I thought was a touch surprising. The scoring in the game vs. France was odd - the own goal, the penalty - obviously Norway hung with them, but wasn't exactly their best. On the other side, the Aussies got Sam Kerr rolling yesterday, and when she is rolling she's one of the best players in the game. Their defense, however, is unreliable, and that doesn't appear likely to change. I think I actually might take Norway in this game if I were a betting woman.

All that is true, but even if they're underperforming a bit, I'd still expect an Australia-Norway R16 match to be pretty fun to watch. Contrasting styles, and quality offensive players.

We've got one of the marquee matches of the group stage coming up in a few minutes: Japan-England (with Argentina-Scotland as the undercard). Despite their finish in the Finals in the last WWC, Japan has spent the last 4 years sliding back into the pack while England has risen to world #3. Japan couldn't find a goal against Argentina, while England did, so that's what separates them going in, and what gives England the group in the event of a draw.

It's a bit odd to me that they'd put England-Japan in Nice, while Argentina-Scotland happens at the much bigger Parc des Princes in Paris, hundreds of miles closer to England and of course much larger airports. England's first game was also in Nice, at the southern tip of France, while their 2nd was in Le Havre, in Normandy at the very north of the country - and now back down. If I didn't know better, I'd say the tournament's French organizers were messing with the English, though I can't imagine any reason they'd want to do something like that...

Looking forward to Japan and England, who are both in the "1st Place in the group might be harder" boat. England have changed their starting lineup pretty drastically, clearly thinking extra rest for some and valuable playing time for others is at least as important as winning the game and the group. That said, my guess is when you're on the pitch you're playing to win every ball, every shot, every game, no matter what your manager does and no matter who is playing beside you. Japan ousted the Lionesses in the 2015 semi- final round if I am remembering correctly. England beat Japan handily in the SheBelieves Cup back in March. Japan is a very young team now, new manager since the last WC.

I agree about the site for this game vs. the Scotland v Argentina game. Tere have been lots of complaints about getting to the stadium in Nice, and I'm reading that as of about 15 minutes ago it was only about 1/4 full for this game.

Scotland leading Argentina make things more comfortable for Japan at the moment but they really need to keep it at -1 unless and until Scotland score again.

I'm a little confused as to why both Argentina and Scotland are wearing their change kits.

The minute enforcement of the line rule makes it pretty impossible to get a save. You just have to hope there's a miss.

Yeah, that was brutal. And a draw doesn't exactly put Argentina in a great spot, either with only 2 points.

With VAR, we are going to have a TON of retaken penalty kicks.

Also, if they are going to give out yellow cards to a goal keeper who is an inch off the line on a penalty, they should also give out yellow cards to anyone who encroaches into the box on a penalty also.
