What is the best women’s team experience in greater Boston these days? Probably a college team? Daughter getting a little older and I’d love to take her to watch a match once Covid is less of a concern
BC.
Especially when/if they play UNC or FSU (Duke/UVA/VT/BU/NU also good)
Helps that they play inthe best college conference.

Free parking/admission can't be beat. And there are always bunch of kids (traveling teams, sisters of players, etc.) there too, so she won't feel out of place. And both seats and grass to sit on. Very kid-friendly and friendly for all age groups and genders.

Thx. I’m an alum too so never bad to stop in and see a few people. Figured it was probably Bc or maybe Northeastern or something. My uncle coached at a few southern schools for a while and he used to bring his team up to play them.

Parking for NU is street parking in Brookline (Parsons Field) much worse than BC. Getting early and being able to walk helps a lot, I think they give more latitude with the 2HR rule when there's a game. DO NOT park right on Kent even though closest if you value your car's mirror. Parking sucks occasionally if it's opposite a Red Sox game-Sundays at 1/1:35. Also no grass option at Parsons IIRC.

If it works as part of a family vacation or similar, definitely get to an NWSL match. The players are so generous with their time and gracious with kids, like a minor league baseball game but even more so. (I expect COVID has halted this temporarily.).

And how often do you get to see all time great athletes play from 20 feet away? I’ve seen Julie Ertz, Marta, and Rapinoe. If you’ve seen other truly great athletes up close, you know how hard it is to describe the experience.

Plus, you can hear everything. Sometimes that means some naughty words the young’uns shouldn’t repeat, but it also means getting to hear what world class communication and coordination sounds like on the pitch. I’d totally watch a stream of Ertz mic’d up all match, moving her teammates around like chess pieces already knowing the opponent’s next two moves.

1pm Eastern (10am local) the Thorns hold Gotham FC in the NWSL Challenge Cup Final. Will be broadcast live on CBS.

I am fully vaccinated so I got a ticket and am heading to the stadium shortly. As a Thorns fan I hope the 15% capacity crown will help them win, but as a NWSL supporter I hope we add to the CBS broadcast.

It's been 14 months to the day since I was last in the Providence Park, and I am extremely excited to be back.

Very cool! Good luck to the Thorns.

This Chelsea squad is probably the best women’s side in English history. Great showing by City to keep it close, and strong work by Arsenal and ManU, too.

And with the increased quality of the Bayern and Barca squads, the women’s game has come a long away quickly in Europe. Would that we could get some kind of biennial NWSL-European tournament.

I remember back in the mid 2000s I had a ChelseaTV subscription and they just started the women's team I think it was my junior or senior year of college. At the time you could stream their TV feed along with the youth teams and listen to the men's radio call. I got it mostly for the men's radio call as I couldn't get them on TV at the dorm. But I'd watch the youth and women's and be shocked how much larger a crowd a random U15 male game would get compared to a PLND I think it was at the time. I'm glad it's come so far.

Sam Kerr is damn monster.

How was it attending the match?

She’s why I’m concerned about the USWNT’s group draw in the Olympics. Obviously, Sweden is class. But Australia can play a very simple low-block-and-get-the-ball-to-Kerr system and get a result against the US. Don’t sleep on the Aussies!

I’m an Erin Cuthbert fan, and even though she’s gotten less run this season with more competition up front, I’m hoping she gets into the UCL final and makes a splash.

It was so great to be back in the stadium. They did a pretty good job with keeping people distant. In the old lower bowl and all of the new sections where there are actual seats the ones they didn't want anyone in. The upper sections of the old bowl are benches so those were just taped off, but it was respected from what I saw. I didn't buy concession at this match ( did the next day at the Timbers match), and that was done on your phone to reduce time in the line. I got a barcode and when I got to the front of the line I scanned it and was handed my beer. The only issue with that is that when the stadium is full, the call service is very poor.

Ecstatic to see Aly Wagner fly in to join Brandi Chastain and hubby, and root for their alma mater, Santa Clara, in person, in the College Final against FSU. I'm still sorta bitter with Aly about stealing the 2001 title, though.

(Game still going on on ESPN2)

Been waiting all week for an update on Julie Ertz’ knee, and the Red Stars punt by saying it’s up to the USSF to provide updates?

USSF did provide an update, but still not sure why the Red Stars had to defer on giving this info.

anyway, MCL sprain is good news considering it looked like maybe the ACL was torn. Projected to be back for the Olympics.

edit: just over a week ago some friends and I bought a block of seats for our families to go to next month’s match vs Washington. Wonder if we can get a no-Ertz discount.

Moultrie gets a 14 day temporary restraining order allowing her to join the NWSL. Obviously, this is a long way from being settled, but it appears that all of the NWSL’s arguments were swatted away - an auspicious start.

Went to the Red Stars-Spirit match tonight. A few observations…

Trinity Rodman is going to be very, very good. She was starved of service almost all night, but in the 85th minute she got a ball over the top, fought off a defender, and placed a shot between the keeper’s legs. Pace, power, and placement all in one move. Glad I got to see her first professional goal.

The Red Stars desperately need a #9. It was crazy how wide the Washington CBs played so they could provide support outside against Watt & Pugh…and still the Red Stars couldn’t make them pay for leaving valuable space open. There needs to be some one worth paying attention to in the middle.

Mal Pugh’s touch was really heavy tonight. She did not look USWNT ready, which is why she’s not in the squad this summer. She’s got a ways to go still.

Edit: nope, Rodman actually scored in the NWSL challenge cup, so not her first pro goal. First regular season goal.

USWNT Olympic squad announced. It’s a veteran group running it back - for the last time? Wouldn’t be surprised to see several international retirements after the games.

GOALKEEPERS (2): Adrianna Franch (Portland Thorns FC), Alyssa Naeher (Chicago Red Stars)

DEFENDERS (6): Abby Dahlkemper (Manchester City), Tierna Davidson (Chicago Red Stars), Crystal Dunn (Portland Thorns FC), Kelley O’Hara (Washington Spirit), Becky Sauerbrunn (Portland Thorns FC), Emily Sonnett (Washington Spirit)

MIDFIELDERS (5): Julie Ertz (Chicago Red Stars), Lindsey Horan (Portland Thorns FC), Rose Lavelle (OL Reign), Kristie Mewis (Houston Dash), Samantha Mewis (North Carolina Courage)

FORWARDS (5): Tobin Heath (Unattached), Carli Lloyd (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride), Christen Press (Unattached), Megan Rapinoe (OL Reign)

Alternates: goalkeeper Jane Campbell, defender Casey Krueger, midfielder Catarina Macario and forward Lynn Williams

It's so stupid to respond to the documentary via TWITTER THREAD, the place were you are definitely going to get roasted by a bunch of people are who are not interested in having a real discussion on the issue. All of that info should have just been put into a press release.
Hard agree. They are as expected getting absolutely destroyed on Twitter comments. Again as you said, there is no will to have a meaningful discourse there so the platform to release this was at best tone deaf. How the comms team does not have this kind of pulse on the situation is baffling but is pretty representative in how they have handled this from day 1.

HOW WE'RE INTRODUCING WOMEN'S FOOTBALL INTO FOOTBALL MANAGER

What we are doing is adding women’s football to FM... one sport, one game. FM players will be able to move seamlessly from managing a men’s team to a women’s team and back again. Women’s football will be a part of the living, breathing world that constitutes every one of your FM saves; that world will just be whole lot bigger and a little more varied.

We also know that adding women’s football to Football Manager is going to cost millions and that the short-term return it delivers will be minimal. But that’s not the point.

There’s no hiding that there’s currently a glass ceiling for women’s football and we want to do what we can to help smash through it. We believe in equality for all and we want to be part of the solution. We want to be a part of the process that puts women’s football on an equal footing with the men’s game. We know that we’re not alone in this – the historic TV deal that Sky and the BBC recently agreed with WSL in England is proof of that – but we intend to do everything we can to get women’s football to where it deserves to be.

We know that our voice is very powerful and we want to use it for good.

Shit, I'm going to get sucked into buying the next edition and managing Chicago Fire & Red Stars simultaneously. And probably end up divorced.
Managing Chelsea Men's and Women's juggernauts may get me to sleep in the kids playhouse outside. Probably worth it.

Chicago and PSG faced off today as the latter tours the US. Both sides played mostly second stringers mixed with regular starters, and PSG nabbed a 1-0 win on a fantastic Katoto strike. But the Red Stars played some of their best, most fluid soccer of the year so…I don’t know what to make of all that other than I’d love to see a serious international cup that matches up Europe’s best clubs with the NWSL’s.

Also, anyone who complains about the ref’ing in other leagues needs to watch the NWSL so that they you can feel grateful it’s not worse. Almost every match has issues. Today, the ref called advantage on a foul in the box, which he then waved off when the next play in the sequence was flagged offside. Wut?!?!?

I hope the Reign play in Lumen Field more often, and that they draw well there. I'm a Thorns fan, but if they drew 18-20k in Lumen regularly it would make me really happy for the league. And if they break the Thons record attendance (for a non double header match) then that's awesome too.

The Thorns were on their 4th or 5th match in 15 days, and it showed. They were sluggish.

Tobin Heath to Arsenal.

Chelsea is again the pick of the WSL litter with enough talent on hand to likely make 2 squads that would challenge for UCL slots. Arsenal and City have both added quality and should be entertaining sides poised to make nice runs in Europe. James real loss for ManU, maybe just maybe enough of a blow to make things interesting outside the Big 3 of Chelsea, City, & Arsenal.

The WSL game between Arsenal and Chelsea is quite entertaining. Wide open play, lax enforcement of offsides (yes, I'm still bitter over the Olympic reffing), fantastic. They (WSL and NWSL) should really have the same overarching structure and then come together like the pre-interleague MLB for a true champion at the end. Maybe even best of 3 for the winner. They sort of have that with the 4 team ICC, but this should have more panache.

This one has been a banger. But it’s this exact moment why Arsenal brought Parris back to England.

Edit: Huge result for the Gunners. I hope @mikeford can enjoy it.

If FIFA had any forward looking thinking besides chasing the most dollars next year, they’d spend some of the energy they’re using to bloat the men’s Club World Cup that nobody wants to get a good women’s Club World Cup going, which would actually be competitively interesting between federations.

Mohammad bin Salman has been bankrolling the new Club World Cup in an effort to sportswash away his reputation. Now if he threw big bucks into a Women’s CWC and a Saudi national women’s team…that might work….

Arsenal Women are such a 180 experience from watching the men. It's actually enjoyable and they play attractive attacking football. They smashed Reading today 4-0 and are undefeated in their last 16 matches.

well, the Gunners get Barca in the group stage. That should be both entertaining and an excellent barometer for this season’s aspirations.
