Why would my laptop screen go dark?

Here's the deal.

Last night, my laptop worked fine. Today, the screen is dark. If I look closely enough and at the right angle, I can tell there is stuf there and I can move stuff so I know it's not burned in or anything.

The obvious answer is that the backlight isn't backlighting and I'm wondering what might cause that.

I ask because I just replaced the damn screen a few months ago and I would be really pissed off if I have to do it again.

So...is there anything else I can try that might fix this?

Do they even still make laptops? Be thankful it's lasted so long. You may be able to get an okay notebook for $400 or so, though I doubt it would last more than a couple of years.

I'd try to open it up and see if the monitor cabling has come loose.

But do that BEFORE you try to jump off that building like the Aussie guy recommended.

If you can see the stuff that should be on an LCD screen using a flashlight or at the right angle (basically as you're describing it) dollars to doughnuts its the LCD screen inverter that's gone bad. It's usually a $10-20 part and if you're fairly handy it takes maybe half an hour to replace.

No need to buy a new screen Ras. The battery is completely drained. Plug it in for a while and then boot it back up.

It's worth trying. Remove and then re-insert the battery in the case first to make sure it's all connected properly.

Some laptops actually have a key combination to turn off the backlight. Make sure you didn't do something stupid like hitting that.

Thanks guys. I basically just took the bezel off, detached the connector and reconnected it. Must have gotten a bit loose somehow as that has fixed the problem.

As soon as you said that you replaced the screen I knew that this was it. It happens all the freaking time.
