Why Do I Continue to Read Peter King?

This is the first time I've read a MMQB column cover to cover in over a year.  I thought that overall, PK presented a very even-handed summary of some of the biggest flaws with both the way the referees operated on game day of the AFC championship and also with the conclusions made by the Wells report based on the available evidence.  Though he doesn't take a hard stance either way, I think these are some of the strongest anti-report comments so far by a signature, national voice that go beyond "it's not even a big deal, why are we talking about this?"  He may have his ulterior motives and it may mean dick-all when it comes to punishment time, but I'm glad he put this out there for his audience to read.

He suggested a 1-2 game suspension which is insane.  Some of his points were weak or mean nothing and he left out a lot of criticisms of the report.  King will always make sure his invite to the next Chili Summit remains in good standing.

If you think a 1-2 game suspension is insane, prepare for full-on insanity. That shit is gonna happen.

n. For those keeping score at home, I ran five miles in Central Park on Saturday (the 6.2-mile loop, minus the hill at the top of the park) in 45:55. And only a few old ladies passed me.

I don't get it, is that supposed to be a bad time? Are we making fun of him for being a little self-deprecating? Or just highlighting that he's posting stuff we don't really care about?

There's a million things to bring up in here, I've never understood picking out the running stuff.

Personally, I'm indifferent to the running stuff. I dont think I could run 5 miles, so the time means nothing to me.  But "old ladies"?

We are already past that point.  People calling for 8 games , the full season, death, etc .  Twilight Zone has been entered and there is no going back.

Robert Kraft is talking, and he's pretty peeved...

Edit: Why King?  Assumption that ESPN and NFLN are on the blacklist due to leaks, reporting errors, and their general lynch mob mentality.  It's also amusing to me that Kraft utilizes Goodell's puppet to get a message out, even though what King writes is pretty vapid and benign.

Because King is the most visible NFL writer on earth.

The question as to why is the basis of the joie de vivre that is this thread.

I love to bash King as much as anyone, but this was a good job getting an interview that everyone wanted, and I thought he reporting was pretty even.  What is frustrating is that with the contacts, resources, etc. that he has, he could do something like this every week, and instead we get so much filler.

King tells a lot of dumb side-bar stories about his own life, which deserve most of the criticism they earn him.  This was probably the first instance of those where I ever felt like he used my time well and told  a story with some humor:

MR. STARWOOD PREFERRED MEMBER TRAVEL NOTE OF THE WEEK

I kept wondering what the GPS in my car was trying to say over the weekend as we left New York City headed for my nephew’s college graduation dinner in Baltimore. You know how the female voice in those GPS systems can mispronounce with the best of them? Well, as we drove onto the New Jersey Turnpike and headed south, the voice said, Merge left and head south toward Carsley, or something like that.

Carsley? Could it be Carlstadt? Wrong direction. Kearney? Maybe.

A mile or so later, the voice said, Merge left and head south toward Carsonley.

There is no Carsonley. Now I was getting confused.

Here came the sign, as we approached the lovely area of the Turnpike north of Newark Airport, for the highway that was about to split in two going south. On the left-hand side of the road, the New Jersey Turnpike south, it read:

CARS ONLY

Maybe the setup was too long, maybe you want to get on his case for the "New York City" thing (except, here it's relevant!), maybe his batting average on comedy attempts is pretty low... but I cracked a big smile at that one.

My first reaction at Odell Beckham Jr., being named to the cover of the new Madden video game: The guy’s played 12 NFL games, zero in the playoffs. Could we please let him earn it first?

Dude lived in NJ for years, has lived in NYC for years, and still needs GPS to get out of the city and onto the turnpike?

I'm not sure if this is in defense of PK or not, but my mom does this all the time. She doesn't know how to get to, like, the last five miles of where she's going on a 100-mile trip, but she turns on the gps the whole way, so it's telling her how to get out of her own driveway and shit.

People are weird.

Would it kill you to post the next two paragraphs for context?
My second reaction: In the last two months of the 2014 season, Beckham played nine football games for the Giants. His average game: nine catches, 133.2 receiving yards, one touchdown.

If the Madden game is about not just what you’ve done but what you’re about to do—and clearly the marketing of this game is about the exciting young player staying hot—then Beckham might be the easiest choice in the league. He enters the 2015 season on fire.

Is that really weird? I'd rather do that than have to pull over on the highway to turn on the GPS.

The softball makes so much more sense now.

edit: In all seriousness, that was a nice write-up of the wedding.  Good for him.

That was very nice.

However, if that had been anyone else's wedding, you just know King would have written a screed on the animal loving barn owner and the inappropriateness of the owl shitting on his daughter's plate.

Yeah, that was nice.

Now, his offseason power rankings.

Baltimore as #1? KC as #4? Minnesota as #6?

I love the emphasis on "gay" wedding.  It can't just be his daughter's wedding, no, he needs to call as much attention as possible to her situation and why people might have objected to it, in order to get more traffic his way.  Because, you know, he loves her and wants the best for her.

a. Two overtime games in the NBA Finals. One the Cavs should have won and lost. One the seriously undermanned Cavs should have lost and won. That’s what’s so great about sports.
What?

He's saying overtime games could be won or lost by both teams. It's a serious statement and one I'm sure nobody ever realized before. On top of that, he wrote it with as much grace as a slug.

Actually, he's right on the NBA note. The Cavs should have maintained their lead in Game 1, and the Warriors should have taken advantage of a Cleveland team without Kyrie in Game 2

b. As expected, Sarah Thomas, the first female official hired by the league as part of a permanent crew, will work on easygoing referee Peter Morelli’s crew. She is a line judge.

Yes. Because a not-easygoing ref might make her cry, right Pete?

You wrote in one sentence what he butchered in two half-sentences, Also, 'undermanned' implies that Cleveland won the game while playing short handed.  It's nitpicky but it would be nice if he put in some effort.

The book opens describing a broken elbow injury that 12-year-old Jem worried would ruin his chances to play football. It didn’t, but caused his left arm to be shorter than his right. Jem, Scout tells us, “couldn’t have cared less, so long as he could pass and punt.” Good boy.

Um. Ok!
