He sucks against righties even though in his only full season, he was mediocre vs them and last year he slashed .245/.375/.528 in his 64 PA vs R. On what planet does that make any sense?

He also hit R better in the minor leagues than lefties over the course of his career. He did so every single year in the minors except 2019.

Good to know he sucks vs righties even though nothing suggest that is actually the case.

And I'm not a Dalbec guy. He's already surpassed my expectations.
Cora repeatedly sat him against righties this year and he has a significant platoon split throughout the entirety of his major league career and his last year in the minors.

Your “except 2019” is doing a lot of work there. The way I’d put it is: Dalbec has hit significantly worse against righties than against lefties for the last three seasons at any level.

This isn’t a controversial fact - Dalbec’s relative struggles with righties have been well-known for a while now. He platooned with Moreland when we had Moreland. He platooned with Schwarber when we had Schwarber. Etc.

Anyway, it’s all moot point since JD is out of the lineup.

At least it happened on the field, unlike Wade Boggs injuring himself pulling off a cowboy boot (or getting tossed from a car while willing himself invisible), Bob Stanley gashing his hand after he slipped while taking out the trash, Vaughn Eshelman doing whatever Vaughn Eshelman was doing, or Andy Yount wrecking his hand at a friend's funeral.
To me, while guy is on the field, into the game doing a stupid thing is worse. An athlete off the field may make a day-to-day error like the rest of us. But a guy hurt running onto the field is embarrassing for him.

This is my optimal roster for this game. JD and Dalbec can only hit Cole with Lady Luck’s considerable help. Schwarber (DH) can focus on hitting. Pinch running and relief pitching are optimized, and Vazquez and Shaw are available to pinch hit. Dalbec is noticeably more adept than Schwarbs at 1st base.
I agree. This seems like an optimal line up and roster. With the caveat that Sawamura might be a better choice than one or two they have in the pen (his split can induce ground balls, as we saw in game 162).

I agree: Sawamura over Barnes and even Ottavino

Does Iglesias get to sit in the dugout and travel with the team during the post season? There is some precedent for this, but COVID rules might prevent it...

Hitting significantly worse vs lefties isn't the same thing as being terrible vs righties. I'm sure he is better vs L despite his minor league track record. I'm just not sure how one can say he's "terrible" vs R when his track record to date suggests he's at least mediocre.

Having better options vs R also doesn't make him terrible vs R. I'm just arguing with your terminology of calling him terrible when even you admit in his first full season, he was mediocre.

I don’t think there’s much point agonizing over RPs. If the game is close it’s going to be Eovaldi for as long as he’s effective, Pivetta, Erod/ Houck and then Whitlock. I’d be shocked if Ottavino gets in the game.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
I just never got the "athleticism is wasted" argument. The athleticism is wasted in CF too if he's not any good at it.
Exactly. There's something to be said for positional versatility, and you can always move a good OF around or rotate them, since you've got 3 slots. But if you want him for his bat and offensive speed, you shouldn't put him in a place where he's automatically canceling some of that out on defense.

He didn't make the roster for this game.
Forgive me if I'm sidetracking the thread, but I was looking for an opening to wish all the best to Mr. Perez. He comes across as a wonderful son and very nice person in his NESN spots for Latin American Heritage Month. Hopefully he'll be able to contribute as the post-season progresses.

Go Sox!

The Yankees seem to have Ottavino’s number (even if he did, I’ll say again, technically strike out Aaron Judge last week). Weird as it sounds I may trust Robles in there against Rizzo-Judge-Stanton over Ottavino.

The JDM injury is absurd and we’ll miss him dearly tonight, but the sting is lessened a bit by them having to play Velasquez over LeMahieu, who always seems to come up with a couple of slap singles and nice defensive plays.

JDM missing does at least get Schwarber’s glove off the field.

Cole vs. Boston in 2021:

4 g, 22.0 ip, 4.91 era, 1.50 whip, 12.7 k/9, Sox hitting .279/.340/.512/.852

So yes, they can get to him.

Frankly, I expect him to be terrific tonight, or at worst deliver a 6.0 inning, 3 run kind of game and then turn a 4-3 lead over to their dominating bullpen.

Given the past few weeks to a month I would definitely trust Robles over Ottavino in almost any situation.
I'd trust Robles over anyone in almost any situation (relieving) based off the last month. It's not particularly close. Although he did pitch 4 times in 5 days to end the season. Explains the 3bb in 2.0 IP in October.

Since August 30th: 15 games, 13.2 ip, 5 hits, 0R, 5bb/17k. 1 xbh, a double.

His September was even more ridiculous: 12 games, 10.2 ip, 5 hits, 0r, 1bb/14k. 0.56 WHIP.
