I don't watch them enough obviously, but is the Powell/Covington/Nurkic trio really that good?
If the Blazers added another top 25 talent and the aforementioned guys were the team’s 4th, 5th and 6th best it would be one of the top rosters in the league. Similarly if they magically moved CJ for another top 10 guy and didn’t lose anyone else from that core, they’d be an instant title contender. As is those three guys are stretched a little far for their true talent and asked to play above their station.

What are the odds that Powell resigns with Portland or that they want to make a big investment in him? He’s going to look to maximize this contract and I’m not sure that’s the best use of resources depending on what they do with CJ/Dame. I think I saw some projections that he’d get ~$20M+/year

The Blazers want to resign him but I think it ultimately depends on what they do with CJ. If they have a trade deal lined up I think they invest heavily in Powell. If not he probably walks because there will be offers out there at $20mm+ annually and that’s too much for an offense-first third wheel.

Portland isn’t likely to let him walk for nothing and lose the salary slot while not being able to replace him. He’ll get starter money from them, 4/$90m I’d guess.

I agree with everything you say but here is the reality. Brad Stevens is no longer a low level assistant, a scrappy coach or a fresh faced NBA Xs and Os guy. He is president of basketball operations for a $3.2B business and unlike his past, he has to do what he can to keep his biggest assets happy. As HRB states - and to be clear, there is zero sourced info out there that this is even remotely the case - if Tatum etc want Kidd, the Celtics are likely to hire him.

I don't think Jason Kidd is a good NBA coach, I have my doubts about him as a human being but if he is what the stars want, he is what they should get.

One other thing with these star driven hires is that they likely have an even shorter leash than an organization driven hire for obvious reasons. If these people fall down, management is likely to be quick to replace them, especially given the stakes. I can't see the C's sitting at, say, ~.500 into the deadline next year and being happy with their new coach.
Maybe Brad can talk Tatum into Adrian Griffin, father of an incoming top recruit to Duke University.

Jordan Schultz (ESPN) reporting Celtics and other teams are interested in D'Antoni but the Nets won't let him interview until after the playoffs.

I expect they want to hire more quickly than that, so I think they'll probably pass, but I could be off base.

If they really think D'Antoni could be the guy, why not wait a few weeks? Fear that the guy they might ultimately want instead would go elsewhere?

He certainly has a good pedigree of coaching success, but doesn't quite fit the mold of former NBA star who would relate to the team's younger players, necessarily.

He has cred though. He has been a grat offensive coach with a rep of guys having career years working with him.
I remember Shaq saying that Phil Jackson said the same things as Del Harris, just that Phil had 8 rings to make him listen.

No Sam I Am?

He get a job last couple of days?
It's very possible the Sixers have told Cassell they don't want him interviewing while they are still in the playoffs, or that Cassell himself has indicated he wouldn't feel comfortable doing so until Philly is out. Wouldn't read too much into it.

It seems like the first report of candidates for coach openings is never the final list. I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear about later additions.

Cross off Juwan, for any NBA job.

Sources: Michigan’s Juwan Howard continues to tell NBA teams he's not interested in even a discussion on leaving Ann Arbor. Teams are also calling to gather intel on Memphis coach Penny Hardaway's work. He's going to get offers to interview for openings in this NBA job cycle.
Isn't he coaching his son right now? I never expected this to be realistic, especially since it seemed to be pure speculation.

Give me Dan Craig from the clippers. Learned under Riley and Spo for years. Grew up in Mass and went to I think Merrimack.

FFS at least interview Hammon or Lawson... :|
Well, he doesn't need permission to speak to Lawson and that tweet was about getting permission, not speaking to the candidates. It also does not say it's an exhaustive list.

Sounds like Hammon is interviewing in Portland and Orlando. It would be pretty disappointing if she doesn't get a look in Boston.

I'd have to choose Becky Hammon over Kara Lawson. She's been a more vital person on Pop's staff than Lawson was w/the Celts. And Lawson left the NBA to coach Duke's women (and, for the most part didn't even do that, they threw in the towel after 4 games).

Or the opposite way to look at it is... she went out and looked for high level head coaching experience, which as we've seen can be important, lots of great assistants don't learn what it takes to be a head coach and have issues (Pierce, Bjorkgren, etc.)
Also.. the season got cancelled due to an unprecedented global pandemic.

Seems unlikely to me that anyone would go to as high a profile job as Duke and then bail after 1 year.
Agreed, especially considering that one season consisted of four games.

Really? for a job with 10X the profile? for a job at probably 3-4X the salary?

I can't imagine her not pursuing and taking the job if offered

Exactly. She will pursue this job as hard as the job pursues her. Having said that......much like Hammon’s interview with the Bucks in 2018 when she wasn’t yet a front-of-the-bench coach, there are a ton of candidates ahead of her around the league. It only takes one GM to pull the trigger but I can’t imagine that Kara is a serious candidate for this job with her lack of experience.
