Who was the most disliked Red Sox player acquisition ever? AT THE TIME OF ACQUISITION

Lugo had some ugly domestic abuse baggage before being traded here, don't sell short on him.
Lugo kind of gets a pass in this thread from me, because 99% of my irrationally-intense hatred for him - right down to using his name as shorthand to describe anything f'd up - came after the trade.

Trade away a future hall of famer for a JOHN POLONI. Thanks, Haywood.

AJP wins in a landslide. I hated Wells and Leyritz because of the pinstripes, but I didn’t hate EY at the time of the trade because I had my Sox-colored glasses on and thought he’d be a key contributor to the bullpen.

Another one that just popped into my head: Steve Avery. Wasn't all his fault since the Sox front-office sold him as the Clemens replacement but I remember EVERYONE hating the signing immediately and it never got much better after that.
Ultimately I agree with this line of thinking. I’ll see you Avery and raise you Matt Clement. I hated Clement because he wasn’t Pedro, and he wasn’t even close.

Basically every in-season acquisition in 2001. Sean Berry-Ed Sprague-Dante Bichette-Rico Brogna. Edit...Mike Lansing.

Other years...Bob Bailey. Steve Avery. Mark Lemke.

Re: Larry Andersen. The persons I hated in that deal were Scott Cooper and Lou Gorman- all accounts later said the Stros would have settled for him. Somehow Gorman made it their choice.

I seem to recall something about Ed Sprague taking up a roster spot for literally one day that caused us to lose a decent prospect or minor leaguer as a result

I just checked his Bref page - we picked him up in a trade on 6/30/2000 - but can't shed any light. Does anyone else recall this, or am I misremembering?

Edit: I remember now - that when the Angels grabbed David Eckstein. I'll see myself out.

From an ESPN article and there are several others from different publications:
"
As a second baseman, Eckstein worked his way through the Red Sox farm system. Two weeks into the 2000 season at Triple-A Pawtucket, attempts to "correct" his swing left him batting a mere .160. Eckstein took matters into his own hands; he apologetically defied authority, reinstated his swing and raised his average to .245.
But when the Red Sox needed a third baseman, Lou Merloni got the nod; Eckstein got waivers. Picked up by the Angels, however, Eckstein hit .285 as a rookie and is batting a steady .287 in his second season."

But something tells me Sprague was involved too.

Thanks for this - it's coming back to me now.

Mea Culpa: it was Sean Berry, not Ed Sprague. Both played for the Sox in 2000: Sprague got into 33 games but Berry only made it into one and Eckstein was claimed that day. As I recall, Duquette insisted on putting Berry on the roster over Jimy Williams' objections. Good times.

Right Here
John Lackey. Didn't like him when he was with the Angels (the stuff about the wife... my God!) Held my nose rooting for him while he was with the Sox.

I can see where David Wells might have been listed. And with the rider of "at the time of acquisition" I might have even had him close to Lackey. But he did redeem himself in my eyes with how hard he tried to make a comeback after being injured. He could have sat on his ass and just collected his paycheck but came back in time for the Sox to trade him after the wheels came off everything in 2006.

AJP was a terrible pickup, but it was a 1 year deal and he forever lives in my heart for telling the ump after an egregiously incorrect base on balls: "Give me another ball, one you can see." He got tossed. It was great.

Pickup I hated at the time? Gosh I'm always pretty happy about the shiny new toy, but I never was anything approaching excited for Lugo.
