I'm with you on this. Wesley broke Hanley story ten minutes before Meola based on those tweets. Is anyone else seeing otherwise? Because no one else was saying Hanley to Sox at the time.

Edit: Never mind, looks like Meola had an earlier tweet on this as well.

Assuming Meola himself has sources, it's altogether possible he deleted his original tweet to post a modified one 15 minutes later or something.

Regardless, SoSH is running on fumes if they are using Twitter watermarks to validate a 14-year-old's credibility. Although it is kinda fun to watch from afar.

The tweets were not :04 and :14. If you look at replies too, Meola broke the news in a message to baseball writers at :01. Three minutes later -- here we are.

Exactly, isn't that the point of it all ? Isn't it just part of the hot stove fun ? The kids not the Mark Felt of MLB, it's just another facet of what makes the offseason a great time without any actual ball being played. Half this thread sounds like salty BBWAA members.

Meola isn't claiming a Cinderalla story of not knowing who John Henry is, nor is he claiming credit for another reporter who actually broke the Hanley story. If anything, he should be the up and comer that has been receiving attention, but I guess he's not as cute as a smug 14 year old white kid.

Did he give you a wedgie at gym class yesterday or something? You seem to be especially salty towards him.

I'm treating him the same as I would any other reporter. If Jon Heyman broke the news of Hanley signing and then Ken Rosenthal broke the story three minutes later and congratulated himself for reporting the story first, he'd get the same treatment that I'm giving Wesley.

Yeah, the amount that some people here want this kid to be a sham just feels weird to me. Right now it seems we've been duped, sure. But if anything I'm bummed because the fun's over, not because this has exacerbated a fundamental problem with sports reporting in the twitter age. If you've been rooting against him from the beginning, congrats I guess? Thank goodness he gets his comeuppance.

BREAKING- Red Sox have traded Cespedes, Holt, Craig, and Betts to Mariners for Hernandez and Walker! Sources have confirmed
Yeah, I think he has either said, "screw it, I'll just make stuff up at this point" or the source had been told that to make up for telling everyone earlier he has to now make the kid look ridiculous.

That's not his tweet. His handle is @mlb_nl_al, not @mlb_al_nl. I know it's all the rage to make fun of the 14 year old kid, but we could at least check before questioning his sanity.

That rumor was enough for me to no longer pay any attention to this kid.
It has come to my attention that the mistake of thinking it was the kids account is mine. Sorry.

Not for nothing, here's a tweet that came 10 minutes before Wesley's ill-fated Cespedes trade:

Presuming Pena meant "would" and the kid mis-read it, I'm beginning to think he never had a source to begin with, just spends a lot of time on Twitter.

Folks, we've had our "fun" (guilty as charged). Now might be a good time to recognize we're dealing with a 14-year-old kid who loves baseball and went about trying to become part of it more enthusiastically than he should have. Before anyone here becomes part of something that treads way too close to the line of cyberbullying of a minor, let's pull back and regroup and let the kid's flash of notoriety slowly fade away.

Just a suggestion.

Who didn't see this coming? I mean, from the moment this kid started getting notoriety I knew it was a matter of time before the internet set out to take him down. Sure, if he's getting credit for news he didn't break and gaining notoriety from stealing other people's scoops, it's pretty shitty, but he's 14 years old. Just wait a month and no one will remember Jake Wesley, I hope people don't gang up on the kid.

Great, pretty soon Reddit will identify him as a 16 year old female cheerleader from Oregon and then she'll end up on the front page of the NY Post.

As long as Jake Wesley doesn't go on strike and then pen a three-hour speech explaining the moral code of reason and merits of individualism, I'll be okay with him.

I don't really get this point.  The kid got national attention and is clearly a fraud.  The worst thing that has happened to him is people have called him a fraud.

So Jake's caused another late-night Twitter storm by "reporting" that the Orioles are about to acquire Kemp.  If he is wrong again, that will hopefully be the end of this nonsense.

The nonsense should be over already, but one thing Jake has learned is to call everything close. It's hard to call him out for stuff that doesn't happen if he only calls it close. What should really cause him to go away is the fact that he has never been the first to "report" anything.

There's been lots of talk about Kemp to the O's, actually. He likely just caught it from someone else.

If you're a college admissions dean, in three years years when Jake Wesley applies to your journalism school, is all this phony Twitter scooping a red flag for plagiarism or is it just evidence of an industrious 14 year old?

I'm thinking it's a net plus.

If it's a school that interviews applicants, I think you have to ask him what he has learned from the experience and hear his thoughts on accountability, etc...

For some reason I can't quite identify, I listened to the kid's video. He insists repeatedly that he has real sources, yet nothing he has tweeted backs that up. He has zero news items that came true that he broke first.

Deleted all the Lester stuff.

But, hey, someone on the main board told me that "the Cole Hamels rumor was a sign the non-tender deadline was vital in the MLB FA/trade market."
