Who deserves the gold glove in CF?

Maybe this deserves a separate discussion...

At this point who deserves the gold glove in CF?  Is he delivering beyond expectations defensively?  Adam Jones has the reputation... but a lot of the numbers certainly point to Bradley as the best defensive CF in the league.  I knew his numbers were good, but I have to say the defensive numbers have snuck up on me.

Edit: suck => snuck up

One of those "sad but true" things... I recall hearing someone (Castig?) remark "if Bradley can put it together with the bat, he has a real shot at a gold glove".

I think so - breaking out.

So far in 2014, Defensive Runs Saved has Leonys Martin (TEX) and JBJ as the leaders; UZR/150 ranks JBJ and Billy Hamilton (CIN) way out in front (per Fangraphs). JBJ has ten assists; Martin and Carlos Gomez (MIL) are next with six. I'd say the numbers tend to confirm the eye test: JBJ is a top-flight run-preventer.

Jones has the awards that prove that gold gloves go to the best offensive player. For the first time in five years, Jones' DRS and UZR/150 numbers are positive, but just barely. He's not a bad centerfielder especially, but he's certainly not very good.

Just a quick scan of the winners, but it looks like you have to go back to Gary Pettis in 1990 as the most recent time an outfielder with a poor offensive season won a Gold Glove.

Who deserves it and who wins it will likely be two different people, as usual.  My guess is Adam Jones wins it again - he's in his prime, he's having a good year at the plate, and he won it last year, which is usually the best indicator of who wins it the following year.  And honestly, he wouldn't be a terrible pick.  Fangraphs has him fourth among AL CFs behind Jarrod Dyson, JBJ and Desmond Jennings.

JBJ certainly is in the discussion of who deserves it though.  He has the complete package - great reads on balls, good/great speed, athletic ability to make highlight catches, no errors YTD, and a strong and accurate arm.

The internet should have made the choices more accurate. Both the availability of data and actual video should allow voters to get it right.

It hasn't done that, but it has allowed us to complain to more than just the people within earshot of our bar stool.

Progress has been made.

We all know the award is horseshit. Why do we complain about it every year?

Y'all know that they changed the voting rules last year so that the SABR defensive index has damn near a strangle hold on the voting...right? Last year offensive 'juggernauts' Nolan Arenado, Geraldo Parra, Salvador Perez, and Eric Hosmer all won Gold Gloves.

Thats good to hear, also I thought they simply awarded 3 GG for outfielders without specifying LF,CF or RF. Can this be confirmed?

Since 2011, they have awarded individual honors to the best LF, CF, and RF.  From 1961-2010, it was just three generic outfielders.

PS: Also read somwhere today that JBJ has the best UZR rating for all OF'ers.

JBJ is 4th in UZR among OF behind Alex Gordon, Jason Heyward and Billy Hamilton.

If the Red Sox somehow manage to get back into the WC race and JBJ continues to make waves on Twitter with 'You've got to see this'-type of catches, I think he'll have a shot.

I knew they were involved now, but I thought it was along the lines of them getting a vote and the clueless folks who were always behind it still getting their votes. This is good to hear, maybe gold glove awards will actually mean something now.

The SDI leader automatically gets 25% of the votes--which is a huge chunk in a vote like this--and then the SDI leader board is distributed to all the voters for their consideration.  Here's a look at last year's GG winners with their SDI ranks:

RA Dickey-1
Salvador Perez-1
Hosmer-3
Pedroia-1
Machado-1
Hardy-6
Gordon-1
Jones-13
Victorino-1

Wainwright-9
Molina-2
Goldschmidt-2
Philips-1
Arenado-1
Simmons-1
Carlos Gonzalez-4
Carlos Gomez-1
Parra 1

So that's only 2 winners out of 18 that you can really complain about (Jones and Hardy), though Jones's win was ridiculous.

Bradley makes so many of them look so damn easy it might be hard to get the buzz.

Look at the UZR numbers for the Royals' CFs (Cain and Dyson): 185 plays on 193 balls in zone, plus 74 OOZ plays. If you could have a tag-team Gold Glove candidacy, those guys would win going away (and not just because of the stats -- you don't need special training to see that those dudes are serious ball hawks).

Assuming the voters will only consider full-time players, JBJ should win, but that was true for Ellsbury last year also.
