Yes Betances, sorry for the lack of specifics. Either way that would be an absolute strikeout monster of a pen.

It's a lot easier for them to say this/him to post this after the Miller signing, but still:

That's what I said from the beginning. It never made sense to me to decline a $15M+ AAV even for one year as a reliever. Teams just don't want to pay closers that kind of money unless they are historically good (Rivera, Kimbrel, arguably Papelbon at the time he was entering FA). Robertson is a very good perhaps even great relief pitcher, but he's not on that top tier level of irreplaceable guys, and he was never going to get $14-15M per year for 3 or 4 years from anyone.

I think Robertson and his agent are aware of this. I think their plan is to start out talking $14-15MM and in the end "settle" for $10-11M. And while the Yankee offer provided a better AAV than anything he'll get now, I feel like Robertson resents the Yankees and their MO of foolishly not handing out contract extensions especially since he was willing to give them a hometown discount.

I don't know about that last bit, this whole thing seems all business to me on both sides. I think Robertson will still end up in the 4/40 range, but it might be for HOU, where maybe he doesn't want to be.

If I'm Boston, I offer him the Miller contract and tell him he's first in-line for the closer position when Koji retires. Likely won't get it done, but it's worth a shot. Are saves on a bad team that doesn't spend or consistently contend better than setting up on a team with an established but old and high-mileage closer that's trying to contend?

If the Sox offer him 4/44 they'll probably get him. I think that's how much he is going to get. But maybe it will be with Houston instead. He might not want to go to a last place team. ;)

He doesn't have to get $15m AAV for turning down the QO to be a good idea. If he is primarily concerned about security he's pretty likely to get at least $35m guaranteed (for 3+ years) so he's protected from blowing out his elbow or whatever.

Right, which is what makes that Olney tweet a bit strange. I can't believe he'd be left high and dry a la Morales and Drew last year, but I guess we'll see.

Good for him indeed. Glad to see some restraint on the Yankees part but sorry to see him.

Betances and Miller can hold down the 3 or 4 save opportunities we'll have next year.

NY handled this perfectly, they turned the R/R combo of Robertson/Betances into a L/R combo of Miller/Betances and got a draft pick and saved $10M over 4 years in the process.

I can buy the money saved, even though it is paltry, and the draft pick....but the L/R combo seems meaningless. The last two seasons were Miller's absolute best, and in those years, Robertson more effective pitcher against lefties. Perhaps the Yanks sign someone else to close, if not I think the bullpen is the same as before....swapping out Miller for Robertson.

I would like to see the Yankees go out and get a Gregerson type. Guy can put up numbers comparable to Robertson's and can be had at a fifth of the price.

Fair enough, the quotes from Yankee people this AM are that they really wanted the extra pick.

I don't think they need to spend any more money on the pen, even if they make Warren a starter. They've lost Robertson and (possibly) Warren, and added Miller, Wilson and (hopefully) Lindgren. That's plenty good enough given their holes elsewhere.

All true, but they got Jacob Lindgren with their top pick at #55 last year, who many think is close to ready or ready to contribute already. This pick will be around #30, depending on where other guys with QOs sign.

The two picks they got for Swisher and Rafael Soriano are Judge and Larkin, both high on their prospects list now. Can we stop this silliness, please?
