What just happened?

I know I'm not the only one is this forum that is reeling after tonight and I felt we could use a consolidated place to discuss the dumpster fire that was 6/26/2015.

Sweeney has moved out Dougie Hamilton and Milan Lucic, resigned Adam McQuaid for 2.75 mil a year and reached for 2 guys by at least 10 picks with the 1st rounders he acquired in the aforementioned trades.

What is going on? I'm really struggling to understand the plan.  In what world is Griffin Reinhart worth only 1 second rounder more than Dougie Hamilton?

Seriously, what the fuck just happened?

Mike Halford from NBC's ProHockeyTalk website just tweeted the following:

"Maloney says Boston didn't try to put a pick package together to get the No. 3 from Arizona (and the subsequent shot at Hanifin)." Maloney referring to GM of Coyotes....okay, if true....why not?!

Supposedly AZ made a big pitch for Dougie but wouldn't include the #3. So why would they have taken a pick package?

The Bruins are overpaying too many players, have a dearth of good prospects, and weren't willing to blow it up and try to rebuild around Dougie. Plus, they may have a "thing" about big second contracts. Hard to see how this move does anything but close and lock the "Chara window", though. Maybe they have just chosen a slow descent into mediocrity instead of just blowing it up.

EJ, It feels like a poorly executed rebuild on the fly.  I like the kids they picked a lot.  I really do, but you can't make those trades today and reach for them.  If you don't want Barzal and Connor, fine, but trade back, acquire more assets.  I guess I could get behind a tear down, but not when you blow the biggest part of it.  The players they passed on are universally regarded as better players.

What is the plan?

Im drunk now. I am not as avid a poster on RMPS as others. Can those smarter please please explain why the net of this day is good?

I see an aging Chara and Seids. Now with Krug, Miller, and McQuaid. The drafted D seem short of DH by a good bit.

We still havent made signif cap space back. So it is not like we are signing any top D.

WTF. Shots time.

What just happened? They completed the task of completely fucking up what should have been a great young core with two elite players. It's amazing how bad the management of this team has been. They should have been set up for years but managed to fuck it all up in 24 months.

I'm certainly not going to say I'm smarter than anyone. But I generally think I know a decent amount about hockey, I tend to think I'm rational in my analysis and I absolutely admit that I always trend toward optimism and taking the long view.

After today I've got absolutely nothing. Not a thing to defend, not a thing to understand, and not a thing to look forward to. I'm probably more upset now than after Game 7 against Philly in 2010, which was my absolute low as a hockey fan.

I just hope the yearly impact of today is measured in single digits, not double digits.

I'm somewhat young. Is this the worst time that Boston Sports has ever seen? Between an abject failure today, a failure last night by the Celtics, the Sox being in last place, and the Deflategate fiasco surrounding the Patriots it has to be up there

I'm young as well. Have to think this is the worst point since pre-01. And maybe make an argument the worst since Pedro came to town.

I think the SB win means it's the former though.

Like I've said before, this is the first day I've ever seen in Bruins history where even the most ardent optimistic fan has no way to defend this dumpster fire. People like T4P and cshea aren't even defending this bullshit and are making fun of the team........ What a historric mess

2011 is a blip that's making the Sox 2013 seem almost normal by comparison. And yes, I'm aware that the Sox finished last in 2012 and 2014 and are last again this year. But at least they're relevant. Neely & co. seem determined to make sure that no one is tempted to say that about the Bs.

The early/mid 90s strongly disagree. There was this period that commenced with Reggie Lewis dying and ended with the Pats losing the Super Bowl when sports in this town were a tragedy.

They've thrown the nuclear bomb onto the franchise. They cleaned house, didn't get cap relief, and didn't package picks up to get an impact draftee. They've put the franchise into the purgatory of mediocrity for years to come. Fan apathy is going to set in and it's going to take years to get it back. They managed to turn two early 20s stars into nothing. I thought I was down on Red Sox management. Well they look like geniuses compared to the idiots running Causeway Street. How many front offices run every major young talent out of town because they don't want to pay them? They deserve all the negativity thrown at them. Theyve lost me in terms of trust and knowing what direction they're going.

Holy shit. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you're not old enough to remember the Boston sports landscape in the '90's. Outside one Super Bowl appearance there wasn't much to look forward to. The Pats sucked outside that one year. Christ they almost moved. The Bruins sucked after '92. The Celtics sucked after '91. And The Red Sox weren't any good until '98 (no I'm not counting winning a shitty division in a strike year in '95). This pales in comparison to that.

I generally lurk, but today's bloodbath has forced me to come out of the woodwork. I don't think there's a worse feeling in sports than when you realize your team is run by people that are completely incompetent, and I think that's what happened today. The only other time I remember feeling this way in recent memory is when the Red Sox hired Bobby Valentine, and this is like, 5 times worse. Sweeney clearly has no idea what he's doing, which by extension means Neely has no idea what he's doing. Not only do they not value young talented players, they seem to actively resent them ('How DARE they ask for the same money as a veteran?!?'). Today we found out the Bruins valued Adam McQuaid more than Dougie Hamilton, and that's just remarkably depressing. I've never seen another series of moves where not one person outside the organization can remotely justify them. I moved to New York recently, and while I could never root for the Rangers, I honestly think I might start checking out some Islanders games, because I feel like it's going to be 5 years before the Bruins play another important game.

True but expectations were also low for those teams.  The B's have blown up a once promising team that looked like they would seriously contend for a decade.
I'd say the B's should go and hire Dave Lewis but I think we are going to find out that Claude can't do anything either with this sorry D corps which may well be the worst in the NHL next season.  They have one D that can skate at all and he is 5'8".

The B's started the draft with 3 picks in the first 20, NYI didn't have a pick in the first 60 yet arguably ended up with a better draft.

Just stop. Please. You are embarrassing yourself. It wasn't a good day for the Bruins, but at the same time there is no need for this kind of hyperbole. There should be 0 pity for a town whose longest championship drought is 7 years with the Celtics. The Patriots just won the Super Bowl 5 months ago for christ sake. It's obvious why so many people despise Boston fans.

The Jets comparisons are not apt. That is a chronically futile franchise. Today was the dismantling of a strong franchise for no other reason than "hey, look what I can do." Today, all the rugs were pulled out from under all the legs.

Making changes to a team that didn't make the playoffs is a necessity. But in this case, I really have no idea what the plan is or what they are gaining. They seem lost.

I didn't say I know what it feels like to be a Jets fan the last 5yrs just today and it doesn't feel good.

I can't honestly remember a time when other teams fans felt sympathy towards a Boston franchise.  Perhaps 86 Sox is close but even most opposing teams weren't sympathetic.  Perusing HF Boards and rival fans are offering condolences, not in a mocking fashion they are legit sympathetic to B's fans after today.

Honestly didn't mean to call out any post or poster in particular. Just seen the comparison a few times today and the shock/upheaval is what makes this all the worse. We've come to expect better and that was all thrown out today for nothing. Sucks for all of us.

This is one of those days we may not be able to rationally discuss for years. Not because we need to wait for the kids to develop and impact the NHL team, but because every time the Bruins get bogged down in their own zone, every time they lose to a strong forechecking team, every time they draft high and all we'll be able to think is, "better not get attached to this kid, since he'll be run out of town in 3 years," we'll collectively go to tonight and curse Sweeney and Neely all over again.

This is how bad tonight has been in my mind: I saw someone mention that Rask was in play, and I'm now afraid that Sweeney may be stupid enough to believe Rask isn't worth his cap hit and will trade him for tenths of a cent on the dollar, all while retaining a bit of the cap hit. It's irrational, and I'd like to believe even he's not that dumb, but I can't shake the belief that if he was incompetent enough to orchestrate tonight, he's incompetent enough to torpedo any chance of this team being competitive in the next 5 years.

As I said before I'm young but I still look back on today (well now yesterday) in complete shock/denial. Like I still can't believe what happened, this day changed the franchise now and for who knows to what capacity later. This is one of those dates that may come back to live in Boston Sports infamy, My only thought now is that Pastrnak better watch his back in a couple years. Just wow

You have 6 picks in the first 60 slots.  What the fuck do you need any of the rest after round 2 for?  The Hamilton trade fucking sucks, but with the draft you can salvage it more so than the Seguin trade.  The Lucic trade is fair value, I don't hate it.  But why are you retaining salary and signing McQuaid when you are up against the cap?  Certainly other team would take Lucic's salary in full for a lesser return.  Why are you taking a goalie back when you have Subban/McIntyre behind the highest paid goalie in the league?  Why are all three still here when you could package one to move up a few spots and get true top ten talent?  Why do you pull off the once in a lifetime 3 consecutive top 15 picks if you only plan on reaching with the last two, when you can trade back or go crazy because you have MULTIPLE second round picks/late round picks to get back into the first?  Why not take future second rounders to trade back a few spots and still get your binkies?  Why give a rookie GM so much rope that he ends up trading mulitple NHL ready talents for futures, when we have an already aging defense, but an in it's prime up the middle core soaking up most of the cap?  Your wing talents (and third line center) are now traded, mostly playing the off wing, unsigned, gigantically nostrilled or David Pastrnak.  But once again, we still have Kelly and a slew of players to put together the most awesomest 4th line ever.

It is absolutely baffling.  So many moves contradicting one another to end up with middling talent.  The worst fear is likely to come true.  Krejci, Rask and Bergeron will win us too many games to truly tank, and we have a lack of top flight prospects to supplement the other big pieces that are too tired now and too old to truly contribute.  And this comes the same day as the fucking draft where we could have had multiple top 8 draft talent by maneuvering  the number 13, 14 and 15 picks, 3 second rounders and a further 5 late round picks and 3 viable goaltending prospects.   It's unfathomable.

As someone who worshiped Neely growing up I'm really hoping he was on vacation or something today.  Cam was my favorite athlete and there wasn't a close second.  If he really is behind the dismantling of the B's I'm not sure how to take it.

I would much prefer to blame Jacobs even if they had nothing to do with this.

It's been almost 12 hours since this shitstorm started.

I still want to curl up in a ball and cry.  Obviously something needed to change after missing the playoffs (by 2 points!!  I remember a game in March when the Bruins let up a goal after a stupid icing by fucking Campbell late in the third when he could have taken half a stride and not iced it, and I said it was going to be awful when they missed the playoffs by 2 points because Campbell is a fucking moron!!), but I can't help but feel like today was one of the worst days in the history of the franchise.  I just don't have any idea how they can possibly recover from this.

I will keep watching, because Patrice Bergeron is pretty close to the top of my all time favorite athletes list (pretty sure Pedro and TB12 are the only ones higher, but that's for another time), but this is not a team that should be playing for picks before the season starts.  They were set up so well, they were on the verge of a fucking dynasty two years ago, and now it's completely gone.

I just.... I simply don't know where they go from here.

From Pierre LeBrun's Rumblings:

Now, to be fair to the Bruins, it became apparent to them they wouldnt be able to sign Hamilton. But I think the point here is whether they shopped him around enough or picked the best deal.

A Coyotes source insists that Arizonas offer was superior. While it did not include the No. 3 pick, it did have other high picks and highly rated prospects in the deal, said the source.

If it turns out Duclair was in that offer Sweeney needs a lobotomy

They lost shootouts to Buffalo and Carolina, when both teams were, respectively, in last place in the conference when those games were played. They somehow manage to beat the shittiest teams in the league those days, they're in as well.

I can totally understand the rationale to still want to watch and root. My mood will change and so will my attitude, but most of me tonight wants this team to get outright abandoned. Just ignored by the media, have half-full Gardens with little to no chanting or cheering, and have sponsors start to pull out. God knows if the team starts losing money and having a local presence comparable to the Revolution, there will be a full enema of the front office and ownership, and things can get better. Right now, it's a disaster, and much worse than just being bad, this team runs the risk of being just flat-out boring for the foreseeable future.
