Just in case I’m right let be the first to throw out a novel name - the Eagles. Lurie is from Boston and has always wanted to model his team on the Pats. He made a big push for McDaniels a few years ago to get some of that Pats magic. His current coach is on a bit of a warm seat with this late collapse and Lurie has not been afraid to quickly move on from successful coaches.

If they lose on Monday, they are at least strongly considering it.

It’s obviously a great fit for Belichick to chase Shula and a non Brady ring.

My question would be will the Falcons make a trade for an established QB? I feel like the ideal landing spot for Bill has a fairly plug and play offense in place that just needs coaching up. Drake London is a start for the Falcons, but feel like the Chargers are in a better place to win NOW with some better coaching. Herbert is only a year older than Desmond Ridder, if he is really the Falcons QB of the future.

BB: "Hey Arthur, remember that time..."
Blank: "Don't."

Bill in ATL just doesn't feel right. Domes don't suit him.

Very interesting idea. He stays in the Northeast and pretty close to the Naval Academy.

I'm sticking with Washington where BB can finish out his career just as Lombardi did.

where I was last at
NFC East is a tough division to chase Shula, but there is nice symmetry to a return to the Giants.

I could see that and working for the Maras, not sure he'd be happy with Jerry in Dallas.

I could see Atlanta/NFC South from that perspective.

The Bears keeping Eberflus on now seems even more insane. BB coaching da Bears seems like a fitting coda to the goat's career.

It is an interesting question. Not to get to gossipy, but he’s 72 and just ended a major personal relationship, if the gossip is to be believed. (We never really discussed whether personal relationship turmoil contributed to his on field performance, because it’s all kind of useless speculation, but in asking what he might do next it seems possibly relevant.) Now he ends a professional one. The man is at a crossroads. We always think of him as a rock, but we really don’t know. He is a north easterner through and through. His daughter coaches at holy cross. Family seems important to him. Starting over in L.A. with his sons? That is my guess. I think he will give it a go for two or three years. Live in an apartment, whatever. I don’t know Bill. I just imagine I do. That doesn’t seem like our guy long term. Coaching a small New England college and hanging out on the vineyard seems like our guy. But who knows? Maybe he becomes Mr. Hollywood.

That stupid record may be an albatross for the guy. He may feel compelled to pursue it, but you wonder how fulfilling that will be. I hope he gets it fast.

I was going to make a joke about the Wesleyan lacrosse coach getting nervous. Then I looked him up, and he seems to be the BB of Div III lacrosse coaches:

John Raba is entering his 28th season at the helm of the Wesleyan men’s lacrosse program in 2024. The NESCAC’s all-time winningest coach, Raba, boasts an incredible 305-133 record, marking a .696 winning percentage while playing in the most competitive conference in the country. Raba is currently ranked seventh all-time in head coaching wins at the Division III level.

I think he's safe even if BB wants the job.

Which team is gonna give BB 27 wins? For most teams with an HC issue, that could take 4+ years.

If there is any karma in the world, he goes to the Naval Academy, puts the ridiculous record in the rear view mirror and rests solely on the 6 rings as evidence of his position as the pinnacle of NFL coaches.

Kind of a weird symmetry thinking of those old Dolphins drinking champagne every time an undefeated team loses. Would be funny if Shula ‘s legacy prevails with the number being just a bit out of Bill’s grasp.

I agree with this. This would be a ready-made roster for BB. Makes a ton of sense.
Seconded. He's going to a place that is only a good head coach, and maybe a couple of pieces, away from winning. He's not going to start a rebuild like Atlanta.

I’m going with Dallas. I think Jones will make the move if they don’t win the NFC.

BB might go to Navy post record, but he won’t leave the NFL with Shula barely ahead of him. And he’ll want to gain more space on Reid.

I want to see him go to Dallas. It would just be the most interesting landing spot for a variety of reasons.

Imagine if BB finally brought Dallas another championship?

Even after Patricia destroyed their defense?
Given his loyalty to Patricia, this could be a positive. The chance to work together again and rebuild that side of the ball. I could easily see it.

One of the questions on the Eagles is could BB exist with Howie Roseman? Roseman isn't going anywhere so if BB requires GM responsibilities and power then Philly isn't likely to be a good fit. You guys know BB better than I but I would think that perhaps he'd be fine with 100% focus on coaching up a very strong roster. It seems, I don't know, more acceptable to enter a new situation where he doesn't get that power than to relinquish that already existing power as he'd have had to do in NE.

Great point. Lurie loves Roseman (for good reason).

It's not scientific at all but it is worth mentioning that Schefter specifically noted Atlanta in his tweet. I don't think he would throw that out there blind.

IMO, the most interesting spot is Dallas. Belichick and Jerruh together, BB trying to get Dallas a ring. That's good television

I don't see the Chargers. Shaky ownership, other than Herbert, not a great cupboard in place, and hard to see Bill uprooting his life at 72, and moving to the west coast. Washington seems like the most logical fit, followed by Atlanta. Though the Philly wildcard is definitely intriguing.

When thinking about maximizing wins in the short term (let's face it, Bill won't be coaching for 5 more years), it'd be much better to go coach the Chargers, who have the QB in place but not a great roster, than say the Falcons, who have a better roster and no QB in place. If you have the quarterback you can contend, and I trust Bill to bring a major upgrade to that defense. They could be a dangerous team right away.

Definitely a consideration. I would guess in ATL Blank and Fontenot would go into any meeting with Bill outlining their potential QB plans (Fields, Cousins, Russ, trading up, etc.) and see what he was thinking as well.

Biggest unknown to me is how much Bill truly values the Shula record, which is a bit of an artificial metric anyway. At 72, he may want to have more time with his family on the east coast. Between his earnings over the past couple of decades and his Nantucket real estate holdings , he's definitely not in need of more money. I think ensuring Steve and Brian can land on their feet someplace, be it in New England or elsewhere, is an important consideration as well. And it's unclear how much freedom he would be given to run the entire football operation for another team.

So, I'm giving it 50/50 odds of him being head coach of the Nantucket Whalers as his next stop.

This isn't directed to you personally - more to the contributors here:

In the context of where BB will end up next...please consider the cap space available for next year.

The Chargers are a disaster in this area. That is a total gutting and rebuild that's going to take some time.

I'm sure ATL would love to have him as Head Coach, but I'm not convinced they'd be willing to give him the level of control he'd be looking for. DC or Philly (if they crash+burn) look like better bets for a "you got it, Bill, whatever you need to salvage this place" deal.

The cap isn't an impediment for any team to make moves, especially not when they're hiring a 72 year old coach with the intent to win right away. If the Chargers' ownership wants to put together a competitive roster for the next, say, three years, they can do it at the cost of 2027 cap space, even if they're entering 2024 34 million over the ceiling.

The interesting thing is all the other HC candidate names out there. Harbaugh (betting favors the NFL as his next stop), Vrabel and Carroll are all there too. Normally BB would be a top candidate for most other jobs but maybe Vrabel and the possibility of snagging a Superbowl-motivated Jim Harbs affects his potential landing spots.

I have major doubts that Lurie would undercut Howie Roseman like that. More like "Here's a gassed up sports car for you. Have fun".

Atlanta makes the most sense today, but I think whichever of Philly or Dallas gets bounced in more embarrassing fashion becomes the most interesting possible choice.

He's not necessarily looking for (or likely getting IMO) 27 wins, that's the regular season record. The record that's in realistic reach and is the real prize is all time combined, 15 away.

But who knows, three 9 win years gets both done. Does he really want to be doing this three years from now? To me, it's all icing on a cake that already has plenty, but I have no idea how he feels about the record(s) as it relates to his legacy.

If I’m the Bills owner I hand him a blank check and a piece of paper that says Job Description at the top with nothing else under it. Imagine that team with BB instead of Hardo?
