What does this sentence mean?

From Mark Murphy on the Herald's website today:

"Despite some remarkable minutes from Tyler Zeller and a 28-point gem from Avery Bradley, the Celtics just barely eroded in a 109-101 loss to the Kings."

The two most common definitions of "despite" are "without being affected by" and "in spite of."

So the sentence could be read as "Without being affected by some remarkable minutes from Tyler Zeller and a 28-point gem from Avery Bradley, the Celtics just barely eroded in a 109-101 loss to the Kings." or " In spite of some remarkable minutes from Tyler Zeller and a 28-point gem from Avery Bradley, the Celtics just barely eroded in a 109-101 loss to the Kings."

Wikipedia seems to have it right: "The editing process CAN involve correction, condensation, organization, and many other modifications performed with an intention of producing a correct, consistent, accurate and complete work. [my emphasis]

It's 2015. Shitty writing, and even shittier editing, is omnipresent.

But this thread should be a nice little repository for making fun of the more egregious assaults upon language.

I have no problem with the use of "despite" in that sentence, but the phrase, "just barely eroded," is horrible imo.

If he wrote, "Despite some remarkable minutes from Tyler Zeller and a 28-point gem from Avery Bradley, the Celtics lost 109-101 to the Kings," it would be fine.

The content within the Peter King thread is going to suffer horribly if this thread has any legs.

"Although Tyler Zeller and Avery Bradley had very respectable days sportsing the Basketball, the Kings beat the Celtics 109-101 in a close game."

"Just barely" could be replaced by "still' and the sentence would be clearer.

The use of eroded is still horrible. If he said, "the Celts had a big lead that eroded and they just barely lost," then that would be fine. But what exactly eroded in that sentence?
