If you like baseball, you probably want to get in on this before the tickets are gone. If you like the Red Sox, even more so. Tickets are $140 for the two day event ($20 more if you want lunch, which last year was very good) and $65 for students (plus $20 for lunch) and the money goes to the Jimmy Fund. The seminar runs August 16 and 17, 2014 in Boston, MA at the Metcalf Science Center at 590 Commonwealth Avenue. This event will sell out.

Last year was my first time attending and I basically felt like I "leveled up" with respect to my understanding of what's going on in the game.

And I don't just mean stats, which this event has somehow been characterized as. Yes, there were stats, but there was also stuff on coaching decision making, scouting, managing the personalities and clubhouse character of the team, how medical issues and information is dealt with, coaching and player development, the physics and biomechanics, the internet reporting on the game and more.

Probably best of all, while there was stats and there was "regular baseball stuff," it led to a greater understanding of the integration of how numbers are used to make real decisions about real play in ways that I had never experienced before. As such, it was like a real "Wow!" moment for me in how the guys who are actually running and playing the game do what they do. (Frisbetarian explains here this a bit more here.)

Something like 14 teams sent people last year. Tom Tippett (head of analytics for the Red Sox) stayed there the whole time. Speier and Bradford took furious notes. I mean, these guys find the event worthwhile. This is an opportunity for some of you to get in on this before the tickets are gone.

Here's a brief PR bit for the event:
We have an incredible line-up of speakers for this year’s event, including World Series Champion Boston Red Sox General Manager Ben Cherington, Houston Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow, Senior Baseball Analyst Tom Tippett (Red Sox), an amazing panel including Directors of Professional, Amateur, and International Scouting, Jared Porter, Gus Quattlebaum, and Eddie Romero (Red Sox) along with team Director of Player Development Ben Crockett, baseball physicist Alan Nathan, and SABR President Vince Gennaro. We will also feature top authors and sabermetricians from your favorite websites, such as Ben Baumer, Mitchel Lichtman (MGL), Baseball Prospectus (Analysts Dan Brooks and Harry Pavlidis) and Fangraphs (Editor/Author Dave Cameron and Analyst Matt Swartz). There will be a front office intern panel discussing what it takes to get your start in baseball, and talks on sports medicine, defensive evaluation, the role of statistics in the media… and more!

Two GMs including Cherington, Farrell who last year was nothing short of amazing and just unbelievably candid and informative (see thread), former players, analysts, coaches and other guys who work with the clubs, prominent baseball writers and some lunatic who claims to head sports medicine at Tufts--this is the whole enchilada.

Also, some of the guys are accessible after their talks to just chat; Brian Bannister hung around and talked ball with people in the hall way for hours. Last year, Dave Cameron (Fan Graphs) and Ben Lindbergh (Baseball Prospectus) stuck around after the event was officially over to just keep answering questions and chat with the dozens of people who stuck around. They had to shut the lights off to get everyone out of there to finally clean up and pack up.

tl;dr, I know, but really, if you're on the main board here, this is probably an opportunity you want to grab.

Seriously, it's good.

I wish I'd be able to get away for it this year, but I can't commit this far out.  I'm really looking forward to seeing some of the insights shared in the event thread again.  Thanks to everyone who puts so much work into getting this event off the ground.  It was a great thing to see from afar last year and I imagine it's going to be just as great this year.

I realize I'm biased, but this is probably my favorite baseball weekend of the year. Apart from learning new things every year and meeting great people, it's just a lot of fun.

I am biased as well and very much agree with Jnai about this being a great baseball weekend. And no matter what you think you know about baseball, you will learn something new. And tickets are going very fast for this event.

Every year people donate tickets for students to attend and this year is no different. Christopher Long, Meredith Wills and Will Carroll have donated 5 tickets. Learn more about them here.

We will post here and tweet about any other ticket donations.

I can't make it, but for those considering, it might be nice to see the dates and location without through-clicking:  The seminar will take place on August 16 and 17, 2014 in Boston, MA at the Metcalf Science Center at 590 Commonwealth Ave.

Ticket purchased. Wasn't able to attend last year but 2012 was fantastic. Looking forward to another great weekend.

Big surprise, but I also love this event without reservation. It has an (intentionally) very casual atmosphere, and is accessible and comfortable for all kinds of fans.

For people interested in working in baseball/sports, we have a resume drop associated with the seminar, and 14 MLB teams, 1 NHL team, and a number of sports data companies signed up for it last year; we expect a lot more participants this summer. There is a Student Abstract competition during the conference, which is described on our website, and a high percentage of past abstract presenters have gone on to work for MLB front offices or intern at baseball companies. Also, we will be having a Red Sox intern panel during the baseball weekend, and they will be answering questions and offering advice to individuals who are interested in working in baseball analytics.

I am pretty much the exact opposite of a stats person, and really, really loved attending this event.  It was eye opening and informative and funny and just plain fun.
Ticket bought.

I'm not a stat geek either, but this was one of the best events I attended last summer. Very, very cool.

Well worth the time/money.

Also count me as biased, but this event has been the highlight of my summer for each of the past three years. I expect it will be this year also. Of all the possible baseball-related events during the year (SABR Analytics, SABR Convention, Sloan Sports Analytics, ...), this is my favorite.

I wanted to let people know that half of the 200 available tickets to this great event have already been sold. If you'd like to learn more about baseball from some of the best minds in the business, I highly recommend picking yours up soon. And please remember that all ticket proceeds go to The Jimmy Fund.

Brian Bannister was just added to the speakers list. He gave a great talk last year about how little some teams do to develop players at the minor league level and spent hours talking to people individually after he spoke to the group.

Will Farrell be speaking this year? I don't seem him listed but Rev's opening post seemed to indicate that.

We have not received a commitment from John Farrell yet, but did invite both John and Brian Butterfield to attend and discuss defensive alignment and infield technique and fundamentals. FWIW, last year John's schedule was not set until late July. The participants will be updated on the event website.

If you are interested in attending, I would strongly suggest you buy your tickets soon. We have sold far more than any other year at this point with no publicity save social media. We plan to start getting the word out in the print media, websites, (hopefully) Sox broadcasts, etc. this week, and expect the remaining 60 or so tickets will be gone soon.

I blogged quite a few of the presentations from a couple three years ago and am happy to do so again if you need help. Not sure I can commit to one hundred percent of the proceedings, however, and there are most probably folks who would contribute more incisive (as in some vs. none at all) analysis. On the other hand, I do type pretty darn fast.

I'd be willing to help out with the blogging (though I don't need anyone to pay for a ticket).  Like you, I can't commit to 100%, but I'd be willing to contribute.  Maybe we should set up a thread or another web page on which we could blog and discuss in real time as it's going on, so that several of us could participate.

Trackman is participating again this year. They were at the seminar in 2012 and did a demo of their Doppler radar pitch tracking system with some area college pitchers. Many MLB teams have the system installed at the major league and spring training parks. Here is some information from Alan Nathan on Trackman from his Physics of Baseball site.

Oh, there are only 50 tickets left for the seminar, so you should buy yours now.

Alan Nathan mentioned on Twitter that there will be a controlled experiment using the Trackman portable device at the seminar to show the effect of pine tar on spin and movement.

A heads up for the people who are putting off buying a ticket to this. We have less than 40 tickets left. Ticket proceeds go to The Jimmy Fund. Here is an updated list of the speakers.

Renown baseball physicist and SoSH member, Dr. Alan Nathan, will be conducting a definitive experiment with the Trackman guys during saberseminar weekend to determine the effect of pine tar on velocity, spin, and movement on a pitched baseball. The experiment will be completed on Friday (it would take too long to complete during the conference), with the results announced during a seminar demo in what should be an incredible presentation.

Less than 30 tickets remain for this event.

One last bump to let you know there are only 8 tickets left for this amazing baseball weekend. Also, there is a very good chance we will have a few as yet unannounced marquee speakers added to our already incredible list of presenters. If you're interested in learning about baseball and helping cure cancer, this is the event for you. All proceeds from ticket sales go to the Jimmy Fund.

Quick follow up after a crazy day yesterday. We were fortunate to find a larger venue for this year's seminar! It will now be held in the BU School of Management Auditorium (SMG) located at 595 Commonwealth Ave. Room 105. Our new home is right across the street from the Metcalf Science Center, where the past conferences have been held, and still a short walk from Fenway Park. The SMG Auditorium offers more seating, so a limited number of tickets were just released!

The line-up of speakers is incredible this year, featuring Ben Cherington, Jeff Luhnow, John Farrell, and many more. This is truly a can't miss event for baseball fans, and there are currently less than 20 tickets left. Over half our 'extras' sold yesterday sans publicity save Twitter. If you have not yet purchased a seat to this amazing event, I would suggest you do so quickly, as these few tickets will not last!

I bought tickets way back in the spring, and sadly, I'll have no time to attend as I'll be moving into my new house that weekend. I was really looking forward to this. Next year, I guess. I'd hate to sit on them when people here are interested in this great event. PM me for details.

Well, this starving undergraduate was convinced to buy a last minute ticket.  Hopefully the resume drop is kind to me.

It's not often you get to announce two sell outs for a single event! The fact this event sold out so quickly twice is a testament to the power of baseball and the Jimmy Fund. I hope all the SoSHers that attend will enjoy the seminar. Please make sure you come see me and say hello.

Well, I unfortunately won't be able to attend but I am responsible for a couple of people from Maryland attending. During the SABR 44 convention I was talking with a woman on the bus to the ball game who said her son was interested in Sabermetrics and wanted to attend the SABR conference. I mentioned that there were a couple of conferences in Boston--Jimmy Fund, MIT-Sloan--and she was able to get last-minute tickets for him and her husband. Have fun.

And hit better as a result. So yeah, Will might want to work on this. Curious as to the effect on fielding, something that was not covered.
