"We're going to Disney World!" NBA to resume season July 31 at WDW

Teams with nothing to play for likely have no desire to show up at this point. Yeah, teams have meaningless games every season by this point, but I think this year, it's just easier/safer to bring in the ones with something to play for.
Actually, my Hawks have been pretty vocal about wanting to play more games this season to help develop what is a very young roster. I don't mind them being left at home, for obvious reasons, but if an extra team was needed for scheduling purposes (not that there is), I strongly suspect they'd want to be at the front of the queue.

I don't understand the Dec 1 opening. Either open mid-month or open during Thanksgiving week

Why is camp still a month out? Not to be an a-hole, but I doubt anyone is that busy.
Agreed here. Really missing out on getting more NHL and MLB fans by beating them to the punch. Also being encroached by NFL preseason hype.

Got to get people back into the country, give players time to move back to their cities, do covid testing, then practice for awhile at home before moving their whole operation to Orlando.
I get it, but EPL in England has players from all over the world, voted on May 28 to restart 3 weeks later.

The Hawks are the one team not invited that is most worth watching.

They should be scheduling exhibitions against top Euro teams and the like, then. If the residual 2020 NBA season is meaningless for them, maybe that would satisfy business interests (curiosity = viewers) as well as player development goals. Team flies to the states, spends 2 weeks in relative quarantine practicing, then plays a series of eliminated NBA teams.

I cannot wait to watch NBA basketball again. A healthy Celtics team is going to be so fun, but really just the opportunity to watch the NBA again... wow. My appreciation level for sports, particularly well run sports, is at all-time highs. I watched a goddamn cornhole tournament on ESPN for 20 minutes recently. That is all.

Oct 12? Adam Silver botched the hell out of this. I know I'm in the tiny minority but whatever.

Should've just cancelled the damn season.
i agree oct 12 is too far i wouild had came back with 8 teams and 5-7-7- start july 25 end aug 24 the 8 teams wouild been LAL MILW LAC TOR DEN BOS Play in east between mia indy philly for the 4 play in the west betwen HOU UTA okc for their 4 seed the play in starts july 16 end july 23 best of 3 5 Hou vs 6 okc winner has to beat utah 2 times indy vs philly winner has to beat mia twice

also draft aug 27 FA starts aug 31 training camps oct 1 season tip off nov 8

TOR-BOS and LAC-DEN are gut matchups

So, as was pointed out on twitter a lot yesterday, this wouldn't exactly work. The Celtics next 8 games against invited teams do not include Orlando, however Orlando's next 8 would include Boston twice.

Since this is being done primarily for seeding why not have the 9 East teams just play every other East team once. Then the 13 West teams can find some equitable split as well.

Has anyone in the NBA noticed Florida’s 66% increase in Covid cases over the past two weeks? Yeah, “We’re going to Disney World!” and Mickey Mouse has Covid.

Where's that from?

Two weeks ago Florida had 51,746 positive cases, they now have 66,000. That's 27%. Their positive test rate has remained relatively steady. The increase is due to more tests.

Although hospitalizations, which are among the key indicators of COVID-19 trouble in a community, have also risen since hitting a low in mid-May, they continue to be below their peak in early April, according to local health systems.
“We’re pretty reassured that this sort of bump, which we had anticipated, isn’t anything that’s going to overwhelm us,” said Dr. George Ralls, chief quality officer for Orlando Health. “The most important thing people can do is remain vigilant in the way that they’re socializing."

Officials attribute some of the increase to more testing, Memorial Day weekend outings and people starting to get out more. It’s likely too soon to know if the thousands of people at the George Floyd protests in downtown Orlando contributed to the rise, because there is a two- to three-week delay between infection and symptoms.
Per article, Orange County had 64% jump in last month, but not the whole state.

So, I don't agree with your general premise, but I don't know what the 66% comment refers to.

Taking the data you linked, I did a trailing 7 days average positive test rate. 2 weeks ago yesterday, May 26, it was 3.1%. Yesterday, it was 4.3%. Meanwhile, I don't see an increase in testing - it was 30K averaged for the week ended May 26, and 30K for the week ended June 9 (169 more tests per day for the newer week). Average new hospitalizations appears to have had a small decrease, and deaths appears to have had a small increase.

The positive test rate increase is what concerns me, and makes me think Florida is trending badly.

It's not like the players are going to be hanging out with people, going to bars, and waiting in line for Space Mountain. It's going to be its own separate entity, separate hotel, separate stadium. So hopefully they avoid any problems.

And that uses data from here:
https://www.covidexitstrategy.org/
It looks like they're comparing positive tests today to positive tests 14 days ago (Day T-13) - 1,222 vs. 738 positive tests, 65.6% increase.
And that makes sense, doesn't it? The rate of infection is increasing, which is not good. And they're using a rolling average which helps smooth out the day-to-day variance.

I’m no expert but I think these numbers are lower than most were predicting and none of these numbers are indicating anything near a second lockdown.
Isn’t it early to tell? We’re just talking trends here. If those trends continue, then the numbers start getting very large again.

You might be right about lockdown however. There might not be a political appetite to go there again in many states, no matter what happens.

Agree with all of the above. I expected worse but trends are also better than expected in Europe. It’s also early yet but I cannot imagine we will see Florida, Texas, etc locked down again unless the health systems are overwhelmed.

Not sure how much of this is just posturing but it seems the players aren't particularly happy with the "bubble" idea (with old friend Kyrie leading the charge):

Edit: Red beat me to it but the above tweet suggests that there appears to be a sizable contingent that is on Kyrie's "side" here (although "one agent's estimate" could be complete BS).

I can understand not wanting to be stuck inside the bubble with Kyrie....isn’t that the key takeaway here?

I don't understand the issues with what they're trying to do in Orlando. As long as it is safe to play, I don't see an issue. If the problem is that it didn't go to an all-player vote, that's on the CBA that the NBPA agreed to. I agree that it would not be great to be away from their families, but it is what it is.

They totally have a right to pushback and should.

It's why setting the target date so far out was a bad idea. Restarting the season wasnt about quality of play, it's about money. The longer the players have to sit with the idea, the more concerns are going to be raised. If that number is legit, the nba has a real issue on their hands.

If they want to collect their 2020 salary and have a competitive, fair playoff they need to isolate. Otherwise just cancel the season.

I'm not interested in watching the Rockets forfeit in the first round because Harden got COVID at a strip club.

I'm not doubting the players concerns, but they will also lose quite a bit of money from this both this year and next year as the revenue decreases since it's a 50-50 split. For example, I read a Yahoo article that someone like Ben Simmons would stand to lose ~$10M next year after signing that max

It would be totally pathetic on the part of the Kyrie gang if they cannot salvage an NBA season. The Euro soccer leagues had a much larger challenge, and they are doing fine.

And...some even brought back their sub leagues (2nd and/or 3rd divisions).

Totally understandable that players don't want to be in a bubble, but there's a cost to that choice. As shown here:

View: https://twitter.com/vincegoodwill/status/1271520341354037249?s=21

Yahoo Sources: Several high profile players are communicating with their counterparts and educating them on potential negative financial impact not playing would have on the players, not just for this season but moving forward. (Cont’d)

Yahoo sources cont’d: The high profile players are also relaying that the NBPA won’t have any leverage negotiating a new CBA with owners in the middle of a pandemic

I'm ok with 2/3 of the top 40 (39? 42?) players not playing as long as Tatum, Brown, Kemba, Hayward, and Smart are all playing.

Yikes, apparently the whole CBA will likely get nuked if the bubble falls through.

View: https://twitter.com/ericpincus/status/1271520939142868992?s=21

The likelihood of the CBA being torn up if the players don't return, which is entirely legal per the document, is as close to 100% as you're going to get. I'm not going to advise players on what they should do. They need to be true to their convictions. Just know the stakes.

Have we heard Kyrie speak out regarding this topic prior to this? I've heard guys like Jaylen and LBJ do so.

Is it possible that he's entirely sincere? Sure. Do I think he is? Um....
