JBJ has a 463 ops in 570+ PA away from Fenway in the last two years. In his career, he’s 116/195/173 when used as a substitute (77 PA’s). It will be shocking if he’s useful in Toronto.

It’s a major league deal for JBJ who stays in the AL East.

I think he could be quite useful in his original expected role in Boston: defensive replacement, 4th outfielder and occasional platoon starter. Those roles are more often seen on playoff contenders than will be seen on the Red Sox 2022.

I expect to see JBEh go crazy in Fenway on August 23-25, with 4+ wallballs off the Monster. Bloom should probably make plans to be out of towne for the entire series.

Well it could have been worse. It could have been MFY or MFR

I hope he gets a rousing ovation for all the BJ games at least more than Hosmer got in KC (especially since we will have more than 10k fans)

He’s gonna rob 2-3 Red Sox potential HR’s in RC and OPS 1.250 in the 3 games. Book it.

I'm guessing that none of the above are the reason that he's on the team. Toronto doesn't have a shortage of hitters and IMO JBJ will be playing the role that he should have been playing in Boston. 4th-5th OF/late inning defensive replacement/last guy on the bench.

Well, ol' Jackie's at least adding to our collective shadenfreude (with a little help from former dance partner Benny, from ESPN) "Jackie Bradley hit a two-run, go-ahead double down the left-field line, the ball bouncing off the wall and past Benintendi".

And then Beni didn't get the greatest jump on Kirk's 2-run double (almost 3-run double, with Vlad Guerrero being about 2 feet behind the runner in front of him and just being tagged out at the plate). So, ex-Sox guys were crucial in the NY game yesterday.

Jackie ended up hitting worse for Toronto (178/250/274) than he did the Sox (210/257/321). He hit .288 at Fenway and .141 everywhere else. He was 3 for 52 at the Rogers Center.

It’s hard to understand how a guy can be a really good player in one park yet completely inept everywhere else, isn’t it?

Ha, one way of looking at. JBJ and all his weird splits really intrigue me. He strikes me as a guy who may really need a set routine or something to succeed? It’s hard to figure out.

As George Will once wrote:

"[Roy Smalley's] career batting average was .227. He would come to the plate batting about that, and the Cubs’ radio announcer Bert Wilson would cheerfully say, “Smalley is overdue for a hot streak.” My father would patiently explain to me that Stan Musial batting .227 — not that he ever did that — would be overdue but that Smalley was just being himself."

On the bright side, JBJ has still been a huge improvement over the guy whose role he replaced. Bradley Zimmer was .101/.200/.213 in Toronto this year.

Given his defensive prowess, somebody is bound to pick him up. Can't imagine he's going to be offered much more than the veteran's minimum though. Maybe a minor league deal with an invite to spring training?
I think that's about the best he could hope for at this point. Wouldn't be shocked if it was from the Sox, either. He's been at his best here, knows Fenway, and could be a defensive call-up in a pinch. With the changes in defensive alignment rules next season, having a guy who can run down a fly ball with the best of the them, even if he's a noodle bat, may not be the worst option for the 26th man. And he'd be an easy, cheap cut.

In other news, is it ok to say Zappe is better than Hoyer yet?

JBJ is 32 years old and has made over $55 million just in salary in his career. Does he want to ride minor league buses now? We will find out perhaps.

He'd hardly be the first millionaire aging ballplayer to ride buses trying to cling to a fading career. He certainly isn't going to get a mid-season call from a team in need of an outfielder if he's sitting home on his couch instead of on a team bus somewhere in the midwest. History suggests that for a lot of players, the league figures out they're done long before they accept it. If he thinks he can still be a big league player, he'll go to the minors, do the work, and patiently wait for his opportunity even if it may never come.
