Week 8 - Patriots @ Bills

So, here we are nearing the midpoint of the season and a win on Sunday would move the Pats to 6-2, firmly in grasp of first place in the division and in position to contend for a bye in the AFC. Like I said when I started the Week 4 thread, the Zombie Pats are not dead yet.

The Bills made the playoffs last year for the first time since Bill Clinton was President, but have taken several steps backwards in 2017. They come into the game with a pretty good defense (-1.4% DVOA good for 6th in the league according to the Football Outsiders). But their offense is bad, like really, really bad. Through 7 weeks of the season they have a -53.2% DVOA, the worst offense through 7 weeks that the Outsiders have ever measured, and the latest into the season any team has ever been below -50%. This team stinks on offense and should not be able to generate enough yards and points to beat the Pats this weekend, even if the Pats weapons are limited (Sony almost certainly out, Gronk's status uncertain).

Tom Brady is 28-3 against the Bills since he became the starter for the Pats. A win on Sunday in Buffalo would be Brady's 15th in Orchard Park, moving him past Drew Bledsoe as the QB with the most wins in Buffalo's home stadium since 2001, and yes that includes every single QB who has started for Buffalo during that time frame.

The Bills suck. Win.

28-3 you say?

Looks like DNP's for Gronk, Sony Michel, Eric Rowe, Marcus Cannon, and Deatrich Wise. I wouldn't read into Gronk and Wise not being there today as they have an extra day this week to prepare/treatment. Tomorrow if they are still DNP then that is a problem.

it's ridiculous they chose this for a MNF game and it's going to look even worse now with Allen out.

ESPN’s biggest issue is they can’t flex the games, and I can’t see a path there practically speaking.
I understand they want a Pats MNF every year but a Buffalo game was never going to be competitive. my guess is ESPN bought into the Bills making the WC last year and them being a contender, deliriously.

Remember 2007? think that was a 56-7 thrashing at Orchard Park. lol

Does anyone know the process by which it is decided which games end up on which networks? IOW, every network would want a Pats/Eagles game this year (I know they aren't supposed to play, but just as an example of a high-profile, inter-conference matchup) so who decides whether such a game would be on CBS, Fox, NBC (Sunday night), or ESPN (MNF), or whoever carries Thursday Night Football? I seem to recall that the home networks (i.e. CBS and Fox) can protect certain games from getting flexed out to NBC SNF during the season, but what about when the schedules are being created? Can ESPN say "we want Pats/Steelers" but then CBS says, "Nope, that's a CBS National game at 4:30" only to have the NFL say "this is the marquee matchup, it's going on NBC Sunday Night." Or does the NFL just set everything back in April and tell the networks "You get what you get and you don't get upset."

Hightower added to the injury report for a knee. Not what you want to see for a guy who's dealt with knee problems in the past and has looked slow at times already this season. Not seeing which knee it is. I believe it was his right knee that sustained the MCL sprain in last year's opener.

I *think* every team needs one of these "national" games, so perhaps there was some of "Buffalo made the playoffs" and "At least we can talk about Brady"...

The Bills Mafia also hates Brady more than probably anyone and will be liquored up so it should at least be a fun atmosphere. I also wouldn't be surprised if they hang with us for a while. We do have the knack of making crappy QBs look good.

Through the Thursday night game, there were more passing TDs thrown by WR in the league (4) than by Bills QBs (3).

Sony Michel is back at practice today. Very interesting. I don't think he'll play but it bodes well for Green Bay next week.
Was it young Hightower who looked to be out for a significant amount of time a few years ago, and then sprung up again at the next game?

Malcolm Mitchell (2016) and Matt Slater (2009) both had really ugly looking elbow injuries in the preseason. Mitchell was back for Week 1, Slater missed two weeks. Not sure if those were what you were thinking of, but those were definitely cases where we thought those guys were done or close to it.

Definitely not Slater, it was more recent. Could be Mitchell...but I really think it was Hightower. Hm...

Regardless. These young guys bounce back!

Gonna be another late night in Boston. Sleep deprived body is ready though, still riding high on last night.

Could use a nice relaxing game, injury free, etc.

Another late night in Boston! I’d love to be EDT right now. I have the alarm set for 1am to catch kickoff. This is the 4th night in a row for a middle of the night wake up and my wife is getting concerned. But it’s not like I’m going to sleep through WS games anyways and I can’t sleep through the Pats. At least I got an extra hour of sleep this weekend with daylight savings time (have we killed that yet or are we killing standard time?) coming to an end in Europe. See you in a few hours.

ANYTHING they got from his was gravy ...the narrative when they signed him was that he was on a whole different level of trouble....so, not a surprise..

Obviously not a positive, but lets pump the brakes on the "this is the end" scenario. Benching for a quarter is not "serious violation" standard

If this was serious he would've been cut this morning. I think it's more in line with standard team policy and that kind of discipline exists for anyone on the team (see Welker).

Yeah, remember, BB gets pissed when you’re late during snow storm. He could have a “valid” excuse but still gets punished.

Getting flashbacks to Welker getting benched for the beginning of the Jets debacle in the 2010-11 playoffs.

That was fun!

I worked at a company once where my manager was really pissed at me for being late one day when there was a major accident that had occurred along my 60-mile commute between my home and work and we were tied up on the Taconic Parkway for hours. A client had called unexpectedly that morning and it was my job to talk with them when they called and I had let the whole company down by being trapped on the Taconic and I had better figure out a way to make sure that never happened again. I asked him if he were suggesting that I should routinely leave my house at 3AM every morning instead of 6AM just in case another every-ten-year accident should occur, and his response was, "Yes!"
The company went under five years later - no doubt due to the fact that I was still leaving the house at 6AM, rather than poor management.

I'd be more concerned if Gordon was deactivated for the game

Watching the countdown on ESPN, they just had Schefter and Mort on doing their NFL tidbits thing. Is Mort suffering from something?--he really stumbled over his items.

Or is it I just never listen to Mort and he's always like that?

I’m I being a nervous nelly or is the ‘pats looking for a WR’ rumor coming out at the same time Gordon is disciplined bad news?

This kid is a game changer, hope he can stay with em all season!!
