So I guess those same Steeler fans who circulated a petition wanting Vick off the team when they signed him are ready to build a statue for him now then.

No. I still think he sucks. San Diego's defense had not been performing exceptionally going into the game. He played terribly prior to the Wheaton bomb. He barely cracked 200 yards passing for the game. Even though the gave up over 400 yards in offense, it felt like the defense carried them for most of the game.

I love dogs as much as anyone, but I'm not sure how you can hate Vick more than Roethlisberger.

I live in Steeler country, and the rationalizations are incredible.

But what it comes down to (in my book) is that humans are fallible and therefore more "deserving" of acts of violence committed against them.

It's some seriously twisted shit, but you see it all the time. I mean, look at the Ray Lewis hagiography. Tom Osborne being elected to Congress, etc.

So, is the idea here that the Steelers would have run those 18 seconds down anyway before the final play? Because, if they had scored with 18 seconds remaining ...

Considering they ran 2 running plays before the 2 minute warning, and really made little to no attempt to hurry up between those plays there is a real good chance the 18 seconds did mean nothing

That makes sense. Thanks

Seriously.  It's as if the NFL is daring people to hate them or not watch.  Yet numbers/ratings continue to rise.  I know this happens every year.  But with these last two issues (Williams' wanting to wear some form of pink the rest of the year) and this with Heyward, it just seems utterly ridiculous.

Serious question: Should the NFL have known the eye black was a tribute to his cancer stricken father? Do we have enough details to know whether the NFL is killing puppies in this instance?

If you hate the strict rules against things like uniform alterations and touchdown celebrations, fine, I'm with you on that. But this is consistent with past actions.

It's not like his dad was an NFL legend or anything.  You'd think they'd have figured it out in the process of levying the fine, if not sooner.

Marciano, you know very well that the appeals process is the appropriate forum where the league goes in with an open mind and carefully weighs any new evidence. /s

@AdamSchefter: NFL fined Cam Heyward exactly $5,787 for displaying personal message on his eye black, even if it was a tribute to his father, “Iron Head”.

If that's really a "serious question," then you probably shouldn't have asked it

To play devil's advocate a bit on this...  Every player likely has a relative fighting cancer/some disease.  Where does the NFL draw the line on when and how it is ok to pay tribute?  Is it ok to pay tribute for a father but not an uncle?  Can you wear something on your socks but not your face?

It is easier for the NFL to say nothing is allowed then try to parse what family member is considered significant or worthy of tribute.

Oh please. You're so clever.

My point is that perhaps the NFL, as a rule, doles out fines for all uniform infractions without assessing the underlying purpose. Now, you might argue that's not the best way to approach it, but it would certainly explain why they didn't figure it out in the process, as Marciano suggested.

Then that's how you should have phrased your "serious question."

Sorry that tou had to think a little bit.

Edit: I can think of several reasons that the NFL might not know or care about the reason behind the eye black. The point of my post was to ask a general question in hopes that someone might be able to shed more light on the process.

I'm just glad that cancer on your eye black isn't the death sentence it once was.
