That's an interesting question: Would it have been a safety, or Detroit's possession on the 1?

Nope... But my understanding was that all elements of a play are under review (a la the Tomlin 12 man maneuver). Not sure if that would include an obvious penalty.

Yeah wow never knew that end zone part. Seems pretty obvious, he should have just "accidentally" dropped it out of the end zone

Young and Lewis screwing it up by not understanding there is a different nuance because the ball was batted inside the end zone.

@MikeGarafolo: Tirico just said they talked to Dean Blandino, who agreed it should've been an illegal bat and remained Lions ball.

Caldwell should also have been aware enough to draw attention to it.

I can think of less than a handful of HC who'd be livid at the sidelines. I'd need to be a Cthulhu to include Caldwell on that list.

Also, I'm certain BB will be showing this play to his players to make them aware of this situation.

When Blandino even says you were screwed that's a problem. And the NFL is having lots of problems.

Also reviewable. Supposedly, New York did not chime in.
not watching, but how can it be reviewable, they didn't throw a flag and it seems like it's a judgement call as to if he intended to bat it or not

A silly technicality should have nullified an inane rule, but was missed by incompetent officials and coaches.

That about sums up this league, and I'll be back next Sunday.

Also:

@Curtis_Crabtree: Michael Bennett: "I don't like Matt Stafford much. He's from Dallas. They killed the President (JFK). ... I hold it against him."

It was an implication by ESPN. But, I agree with you though. Probably not reviewable.

Oh, you cheeky fella:

@AroundTheNFL Blandino: “Judgment call on the field. Back judge felt it wasn’t overt. That’s why he didn’t call it on the field."

So something needs to be "overt?" What the hell? Does the rule book say "overt?"

If it's any consolation, the team that deserves to get the ball got the ball.

Yes, the rule about change of possession when it goes out of the end zone is silly.

Yes, technically speaking, that was a batted ball and should have been given to the Lions.

But had the change of possession rule not existed, Wright easily recovers the ball in the back of the end zone.

Additionally, if the batted ball in the end zone rule wasn't so obscure, Wright would have known it and would have recovered it instead of batting if.

So even though the NFL's rule book is a disaster and they deserve ridicule - the Lions weren't jobbed. We got the "just" outcome.

Who the flying fuck on ESPN just said they can't make this up? Rules source it, under Unfair Acts: http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/unfairacts

Unfair Acts

Commissioner’s Authority

The Commissioner has sole authority to investigate and to take appropriate disciplinary or corrective measures if any club action, nonparticipant interference, or emergency occurs in an NFL game which he deems so unfair or outside the accepted tactics encountered in professional football that such action has a major effect on the result of a game.

-snip-

The Commissioner’s powers under this section (UNFAIR ACTS) include the imposition of monetary fines and draft choice forfeitures, suspension of persons involved, and, if appropriate, the reversal of a game’s result or the rescheduling of a game, either from the beginning or from the point at which the extraordinary act occurred. In the event of rescheduling a game, the Commissioner will be guided by the procedures specified above ("Procedures for Starting and Resuming Games" under EMERGENCIES). In all cases, the Commissioner will conduct a full investigation, including the opportunity for hearings, use of game videotape, and any other procedures he deems appropriate.
It's Goodell, so I give zero shot of it happening, but the rule exists that they theoretically could replay this.
