The Niners win against the Bucs looks better today than it did coming into the weekend, but the other two wins aren't very strong. Will know more after the Browns and Rams the next two weeks.

Burfict has been suspended for the rest of the season for his hit on Doyle.

And the feel-good story just about ends for good:

“There’s a fine line in football,” he says. “And I think that I’m right at that line. Back in the day they’d probably say, ‘Vontaze Burfict, he’s a great linebacker.’ But rules change. Things change. The game changed. And I have to change with it. There’s multiple ways I’ve been changing with the game. There are plays where I’ve could have hit somebody and I’ve let off, because obviously you get a flag in this day and age. Marvin [Lewis] has been helping. Coach G [Paul Guenther] has been helping me. Change with the game. And I’ll still be that dominant linebacker."

We're only weeks removed from the Burfict was a peace maker in the Antonio Brown v Mayock beef stories. He was also a changed man/leader in the locker room according to one of the week 1 Monday Night booth guys. Louis Riddick, I believe.

Open and shut case for the league. Burfict took three full strides after Doyle was kneeling. It was a killshot.
He was grinning, laughing and blowing kisses as he ran off the field after being ejected. No remorse whatsoever.

With him out of the league (for now), I'm not even sure who takes the mantle of league's dirtiest player, that's how far off the charts he was.

I feel for the broadcast team in this one.

Reduced to commenting on AJ Green’s 2020 contract strategy and Smith-Schuster as motivational leader.

I think it's funny when people say they would do something in a game that a professional athlete failed to do, but I'm pretty sure I'd have caught that.

That is a weird challenge by Tomlin. First and 20 v second and 10, you’re not in scoring range yet, and it’s the late first quarter. Is that really worth it? Now if you fail on a second challenge you’re done.

EDIT - And he loses the challenge, so he’s got one challenge left anyways.

It was a ticky tack call but you can't overturn it.

Also, I'm so sick of analysts telling me my eyes are wrong. Don't tell me there was no push.

I loved it. This is exactly the call they should be making on receivers who push off at the last second to get that bit of separation especially when the defender is stride for stride with them.
I mean, AB did basically the same thing in Miami

From watching the way coaches use their challenges, I assume their analytics guys are telling them not to worry about needing a third challenge and not having one.

Still not sure I would have sacrificed the 1st-half timeout on that one. The upside of a successful challenge was limited, and I think it’s becoming clear that the standard for getting PI called/overturned on replay is higher than it looked like it was going to be in the preseason.

Yes but I root for the Patriots... I kid I kid. I think that this is the OPI call that should be made. I get that not everyone agrees with it but this is the one that really matters when the receiver, downfield pushes off just enough to be sure they get a bit higher or that they can jump while the defender is leaning away.

Joe, I don’t think Taylor ‘loves’ the Cincy situation so much as he loves any NFL head coaching situation. He’s like 35 years old, he’s getting paid 7 figures now, and there’s only 32 of these jobs.

I see where you’re coming from. And as a fan of a team with a nasty secondary, I’m ok with it being called like that :)

Love the heads up play by Boyd to call a timeout rather than take a delay of game or illegal motion penalty. You never see that from a WR.

edit: I'm not entirely sure how it wasn't technically a false start on Boyd, though.

Because he wasn't simulating the start of a play.

The Steelers are running the kind of offense the Bengals should probably be running with Dalton.

Amazing how little it takes to be an NFL coach these days if you are young and happened to be tangentially associated with someone else's success.
