I'm looking for improved run defense against a tough RB in Kamara. How many picks will Winston throw the defense and can they capitalize off of turnovers better than they did last week? Can we settle things down at RT if Brown is not back? I'm looking for more growth from Mac Jones as I didn't see a definite step forward on Sunday. He wasn't bad, but I thought he was better vs. Miami than he was against the Jets. This is a big game if they want to be in playoff contention as it's a beatable team at home. I want to see better ball security across the board as they can not afford to turn the ball over given they aren't scoring a lot of points.

I think that the defense will mostly sell out to stop the run, and let Winston throw it. There will be a lot of focus on outside contain-as in don't let Winston run around, and don't let Kamara get outside.

Offensively they need to get ahead early so that they can keep the ball in Winston's hands.

I’m “officially” worried about the run defense. Let me know where I should file my official report.

Anyone who watched the Saints/Panthers game have any insight into how Carolina contained that offense so well?

Absolutely obliterated them at the line mostly. I didn't watch the whole thing, but I've seen some of it, and looked at what Saints writers had to say in their breakdowns. Looks like Carolina relentlessly attacked the interior where NO was down their C. Looking at highlights looks like some base pressure, some clever blitzes targeting the guards and C. Either way, pressure on 65% of dropbacks, won the line battle in the running game, just thoroughly dominated the inside.

What kind of pass rush do the Saints have? I think the Jets' pash rush rattled Mac in a way that Miami's didn't, leading to Mac's lesser performance.

Saints traditionally have run a mixed zone running scheme with Kamara as their primary outside zone guy and, last year, they used Murray on inside zone. They also use duo. Pats have struggled with outside zone and if Godchaux and Guy struggle against double teams duo is going to be an issue. I don’t think much of the Saints receivers (TEs and WRs) or Winston but they have a good OL and Kamara is a beast (thank you, Alvin for winning one of my fantasy leagues last year). This should be a good game to check their progress against the run. I expect a lot of single high 8+ in the box again. Going to be a huge test for the DTs.

I hope KVN can play because Bower was bad and they obviously don’t trust Wino to set the edge based on usage.

I looked at NO vs GB and vs CAR thanks to friends source. My biggest takeaways from NOR on defense were their defensive lineman and edges were a strength, their safeties are good, their LBs can be exploited, and their corners were also surprisingly good including Adebo the rookie. It’s a solid defensive unit. They run a mixture of looks. A lot of zone but some single high thrown in. Saw Cover 3, quarters, cover 6, variations of cover 2. Sometimes they run cover 3 off-man but also press.

Offensively their line had issues. Lots of false starts. Issues with stunts, loopers, twists, delayed blitzes, shifting fronts, communicating pass pro responsibilities, etc. it’s what you would expect from a line that has had to shuffle their guys around. They weren’t getting much push with run blocking. Center and RG (Ruiz and Throckmorton) in particular looked bad. Their receivers minus Calloway didn’t get much separation. Winston ran around a lot vs GB. Winston seems to have issues checking down. If his first or second read isn’t there he usually bolts. He’s a decent runner too. I’m not worried about the offense. Run game wise they ran a lot of outside zone and wrinkles on it. They like to send a tight end going backside across the formation to kickout the edge for a cutback lane. They run a variety of concepts too, inside zone, duo, some counters (so gap/power stuff).
I expect the Pats to try and confuse their OL as much as possible (so Ameba fronts back in) and also use LB and safety pass rushes whether they be true blitzes or dropping different guys into coverage and sending Dugger, Bentley, Mills, etc on rushes. The Panthers sent Chinn and their LB on back to back to back rushes up the A-gap at one point and the Saints couldn’t block it right.

I think we’re going to see a low scoring game and a lot of field goals. I expect the Pats to play a man heavy game in single high with 8 guys in the box and force Winston to make the right read. I like the matchup on paper with the Pats secondary vs the Saints receivers.

Honestly my biggest takeaway watching NO was that holy shit CAR is good and their play calling and offensive game plan is creative and opens a ton of things up. Joe Brady has really impressed me. Darnold also is so good when his first and second read is open. Someone, I think it was the athletic podcast, was talking about how good Darnold is looking now that he has open first and second reads and it’s true. Kind of his like Goff looked good for a while in McVay’s system when he had the answers pre-snap and they carried over to be right post-snap. Darnold still has issues, like Winston does, when it comes time to check down but he’s not the Sam Darnold I saw last year.

It’s early but I think this one ends up like 16-13 or 19-16. Close and low scoring.

If the linebackers can be exploited, that sounds perfect for what we do well now. Not necessarily a good test of what we want our offense to do eventually, but I can see Mac owning that part of the field until the Saints are forced to add safety help...and then owning the next ten yards instead.

You have to imagine that they're going to do everything possible to stop the run and beg NO to put the game in Winston's hands, right? No Thomas and a QB who loves INTs... It just feels like they do everything possible to neutralize Kamara.

On the other hand, this might end up being a game that Jones has to win. The OLine won't be 100%, and NO is really good against the run. It's definitely going to be a test. Do people here think they get a little less conservative offensively this game?

I think you see a lot of big nickel for the Pats. Go 4-1-6 (but 3 safeties) or 4-2-5 (big nickel 3 safeties). The Saints are going in heavier formations and their WRs are slow. They like to run outside zone. Having Dugger and Phillips on the field at the same time would be a huge help.

I think we see Judon - Godchaux - Guy - KVN per usual and High and Bentley but sometimes it’s High and Dugger or Phillips. In the 4-1-6 above one of those safeties plays ILB. Then the do their usual shenanigans moving High around. Bentley is having his best start to a season with the Pats and is crushing it vs the run. His blowup of Michael Carter on that outside zone last week made me softly weep. I’ve never been a Bentley hater but more of a he is very good when asked to do some things and terrible at others guy. Bentley doesn’t have the athleticism to defend huge gaping holes left by shitty edge and IDL play but if the line is ok in front of him he’s good at diagnosing runs and blowing them up.

The other reason I like playing Dugger or Phillips in the box is you don’t want High or Bentley having to carry Kamara up the seam or anywhere in coverage really.

With Lattimore back I’m just worried about the Pats matchups on offense. The Saints did a good job tackling and handling check downs. The Panthers didn’t get a lot going with them. Not a ton of YAC. I’m curious to see how McDaniel’s attacks them and if guys are getting consistent separation.

If the linebackers can be exploited, that sounds perfect for what we do well now. Not necessarily a good test of what we want our offense to do eventually, but I can see Mac owning that part of the field until the Saints are forced to add safety help...and then owning the next ten yards instead.
I know SN mentioned this elsewhere but I think we see White have a big game as a receiver and (I’ll add) I think they pick on Zach Baun in coverage.

The good news is with their edges out or banged up it’s possible Mac has more time and the receivers have more time to get open. I think the Pats win this one.
