I haven't started a Pats game thread before, but fuck it.

No talk about last week - it's over. You know who is in even a bigger freefall? the Steelers. They're barely hanging onto the 4 seed and could drop out of the picture entirely, as they have to go to New Orleans after this game.

I love beating up on Big Ben & Tomlin. Perfect tonic to wash away last week. Let's do it.

Think within the last 2-3 weeks I have hit zero fucks given about the NFL. Maybe this can reinvigorate me.

A beautiful coverage map for those outside New England this week:
Aaaaaannnnnd this is the week I'll be on a train during the game. Sigh.

Any suggestions for following the game while on the Amtrak going from Boston to Rochester? We'll be in western MA and eastern NY during the game. What are the strongest radio stations I might try to pick up which will be broadcasting the game?

I believe 102.7 in western mass is how I listened on Sunday due to my Sirius going in and out due to my Christmas tree on the roof.

This is the list of patriots' stations.
https://985thesportshub.com/patriots-radio-network/
And i would expect the game will be a national broadcast, so Westwood 1.

But you'll need a real radio (or a premium internet radio app); games are usually blocked from streaming. However, there are a few apps (for Android anyway) that try to aggregate stations that stream anyway. Its hit or miss.

Ridley is still pissed at the pats

FOXBORO — When Stevan Ridley tumbled to the turf at Buffalo four seasons ago, he was one of the more successful young running backs in the league.

He already had a 1,200-yard season under his belt. A tough, physical runner, Ridley had logged a pair of 100-yard games early in the 2014 campaign, his final year under contract with the Patriots.

But a torn ACL and MCL suffered that October ended his season and his tenure in New England. It also sent his career spiraling in a direction he could have never anticipated.

Since the injury, Ridley has worn seven different NFL uniforms and totaled 205 rushing yards.

Now with the Steelers, Ridley has been working to break the cycle of being a backup and third-stringer, “fighting and clawing” for an opportunity to showcase his abilities.

And he’s been waiting for years to do it against the Patriots.
I’m very open and I have to be real: I want this game more than any other game, man,” Ridley told The Herald. “That’s just the bottom line to it. And it’ll be that way from this year until I go in the grave. I’m just that kind of person.”

He didn’t mince words when asked why.

“I was trashed after an injury,” Ridley said. “I’m just going to put it that way. I’m not going to say specifically, but to be a starter for (the Patriots) for four years, to tear my ACL and never get a call back, that’s a tough pill to swallow.”

Ridley indicated the Patriots did not contact him after his contract expired at the end of the 2014 season.

“And now they’re still looking for a running back to try to come in and play — how many running backs have been through there to try to give them some consistency as a quote-unquote first or second down back?” Ridley said. “They’re still looking for it right now. Yeah, it’s very personal. It is.”

Hey Stevan,
Even if you were healthy they probably weren’t going to pay you what you wanted because they very rarely pay market rate for RB’s. Your position is too fungible. But you do your Rodney Harrison thing if you need to.

How is this a story?
Yeah that is the best part of this article

"Now they're still looking for a running back to come in and play," he told the Herald. "How many running backs have been through there to try to give them some consistency as a quote-unquote first- or second-down back? They're still looking for it right now. Yeah, it's very personal. It is."

Ridley has 737 carries for 3,082 yards and 24 touchdowns for his career, but only 265 of those yards have come since 2015 as Ridley played bit roles for the New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and others.

1. It feels like the Patriots have played the least 1pm Sunday games in their history this year.

2. What is it about NFL scheduling that results in this game constantly being in Pittsburgh? Or am I imagining that?

Of course given that we have already lost games with Deion Lewis and Brandon Bolden playing key roles, I fully expect Ridley to look like vintage Marshall Faulk on Sunday.

Not that we need reminding after last week, but the kicking game will play a big part in this game. Ghost has missed a kick in every game he's played at Heinz Field(XP in last 2 games and FG in 2011). Stat courtesy of Andrew Callahan of MassLive.

Download the NFL app. Log in with your cable info. Watch the national game in your area.

Depending on WIFI strength obviously.

Heinz is a shitshow for kicking, definitely a factor if you’re looking at areas where we could see higher scoring variance off of expected points.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Bill passes up longer FG as a result

Good god, how long is that train ride? JetBlue just started BOS to ROC direct, fwiw.

Oh, and go Pats.

Will be in the house again tomorrow. Rain potential in the forecast. Besides screwing both kickers I am not sure which team thatd affect more, but I do know it will suck for me.

Rain will be over by kickoff. Temps in the 40s. Not bad for mid December.

2. What is it about NFL scheduling that results in this game constantly being in Pittsburgh? Or am I imagining that?
The NFL schedule is setup where you play conference opponents outside your division 3 years in a row in the same venue if they are on your schedule (guaranteed to be on your schedule at least 1 out of the 3 years. The other two years depend on finishing in the same place in their respective division.)

13/14/15 - Steelers come to Foxboro if they are on the Pats schedule. This happened in 13 and 15. The teams did not meet in 14.

16/17/18 - Pats go to Heinz Field if they are on the Steelers schedule. They played all 3 years.

19/20/21 - Steelers will come to Foxboro if they are on the Pats schedule. Pats play the AFC North in 19, so we will get the Steelers in Foxboro next season. If the teams finish in the same place in their division in 19 and 20, then the Steelers will visit Foxboro in 20 and 21.

bottom line.... going 3-5 on the road is just plain mediocre. they don't deserve a bye if that's what occurs.

so here we are again with the huge swing game at Heinz.

2010 Packers only SB winner with a losing road record.
And then they went 3-0 on the road in the playoffs.

But their five road losses were all close - by 3 points in OT, by 3 points, by 3 points, by 4 points, by 4 points against the Pats with Matt Flynn starting. The 2018 Patriots are a considerably worse road team regardless of what happens today.

Correct. Agreed. This Pats team could never win 3 straight road playoff games. Winning 1 might be asking too much.

Win today though and everyone will feel much better about everything.

If Stevan Ridley runs all over us today, I’m gonna go apeshit.
Would be frustrating but I would take Ridley being productive if the Pats win and effectively blanket Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster - holding the Steelers to a low score as a result. The Pats' defensive strategy generally is to take away the opposing offenses strength. I'm more concerned with Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster than Stevan Ridley.

Big Ben has cracked rib. I’m sure he’ll miss a play or two today and heroically return.

How do the Pats go about defending the Steelers WR's? With AB and Juju both being elite weapons, it's tough to decide who to double.
I think we see Gillmore on Ju-Ju as he is the longer more physical receiver that he tends to cover then perhaps the wonder twins bracket Brown as much as possible though Jason wil have to handle him 1-1 some of the time.

If Switzer can't go that could be a big loss for PIT as he is there poor man's Edelman. Eli Roger's activation is prob a sign he isn't going.
Chung on McDonald/James is also going to be key, we have been getting shredded by TE this year and PIT has two decent ones.

I have zero feel for this game. There really isn’t an outcome today that would surprise me. Hoping we see a sharp response, and I expect it from the O, but I have zero faith in this defense, especially on the road. Methinks Brady will need to put up 30+.

Defense vs JuJu & AB? Yikes. Need the front 4 to get some good pressure vs Ben. Hopefully Flowers is on his game.

I think we'll see Gilmore on Juju as you said and JC Jackson on AB with bracket coverage over the top. I don't think JMac is fast enough to stay with AB. I also would not be surprised to see Obi get more defensive snaps to play the TE so Chung could be freed up to roam around and help out in other areas.

Isn’t Chung’s strength in m2m and not zone? I would think that would be reversed if so.
