Stupid questions from stupid people:

Air Force are pretty decent, Navy have been really solid in the past decade, so why are Army so bad? I know there's a few differences in physical requirements due to training, but they were a solid program until the late 80s and are much worse than the other service academies.

I happened to meet a former superintendent of the Naval Academy who was on a package tour with us recently and he gave a ton of credit to the Navy coaches, first Paul Johnson (now at Georgia Tech) and the current guy, Ken Niumatalolo. Johnson in particular installed the system that's worked so well for them. He was a bit worried that the new Army coach, a long time Johnson assistant, would duplicate this success at West Point.

Navy almost beat Notre Dame, Army lost to Yale. He's got a long way to go.

Coastal Carolina with the textbook example of why you shouldn't go for 2 too early. If they had just kicked the first time (and therefore the second too), they'd be down only 4 and could afford another NDSU FG

Illinois State is up 52-33 with about 8 minutes to go against the absurd offensive powerhouse that is Eastern Washington.  Illinois State is quietly a very strong team this year, mostly due to the fact that they finally went to the transfer from Indiana, Tre Roberson, at QB.  Roberson is having a monster season, with somewhere north of 35 td's combined rushing and passing.  Had he stayed at Indiana and was in the same backfield as RB, Tevin Coleman for a couple of years, that offense could have been really fun to watch.

Eastern Washington was rolling early in the season.  Their only loss early on was to FBS school, Washington, and they lost in the fourth quarter in a shootout 59-52.  They lost to Northern Arizona later in the season, and their QB, Vernon Adams Jr. (who had over 5,000 yards passing last season and 59 combined touchdowns) struggled a bit down the stretch.  They beat Montana twice in the past 4 weeks though even though his numbers were way down, although he still has over 4,000 yards passing and over 40 touchdowns combined this year.  Sophomore WR, Cooper Kupp already has like 35 td receptions through two seasons, and could set a whole bunch of records for NCAA receivers by the time all is said and done.  He's currently got 9 receptions for 150 yards and a td today.  Make that 10 catches for 185 and 2td's.

In other news, North Dakota State got the win today against a very good Coastal Carolina team.  I really thought this was going to be the game that ended NDSU's streak of three straight national championships, but as they usually do, they got the win in the end.  NDSU finally lost a game this year, to Northern Iowa about 5 weeks ago, and they had to battle a really talented South Dakota State team (with the ludicrous Zach Zenner in the backfield) to a 3 point victory last week.  Crockett finished with 227 yards and 2td's on the ground and he now has 18 td's on the year.  They have a new QB this year, Carson Wentz, who seems to be a good game manager, but doesn't seem like he can win games by himself with his arm, so I think if someone can stop their rushing attack, NDSU is more susceptible this year than they have been in the past few years.

Sam Houston is probably the surprise of the tournament so far, with huge wins the past three weeks against Southeastern Louisiana, Jacksonville State and Villanova today.  They were like 12 point underdogs to Jacksonville State last week (whose only loss on the season was in week 1 to Michigan State) and they beat them handily. Sam Houston started the season by losing 3 of their first 4 games, including a beating against not even FCS ranked school, Colorado State Pueblo 47-21.  After going 3-4 in their first 7 games, they've completely turned it around have won 8 straight and seem to be getting better each week.  Going to be really interesting to see how they do next week against NDSU, which I think is probably a good matchup for NDSU, but we'll see.   They are riding the arm of Sophomore QB, Jared Johnson, and getting big games every week from different guys out of the backfield, particularly do-everything back, SR, Keshawn Hill.  Johnson was quarantined in his hotel room for 36 hours before the game today with the flu, so his performance today (22-27, 303 yards and 3td's) is even more impressive.

Unfortunately, I think we're going to see NDSU in the finals again this year against the winner of UNH/Illinois State, either of whom I think can beat NDSU.  I think Illinois State has a slightly better defense, but I don't think it matters much.  In the end, it should be a great final, but I think NDSU will end up pulling out their fourth title in a row.  They just find ways to win.

Maybe I was counting out Eastern Washington and their offense too soon.  They just got another 35 yard td pass to, you guessed it, Cooper Kupp. I'm guessing they recovered an onside kick, because he literally caught a 30 yard TD only 36 seconds before this one.  It's not 52-39 Illinois State, but if ISU can recover an onside kick, I don't think Eastern Washington's defense can stop Tre Roberson and that offense.

Yeah, I didn't think Eastern Washington could stop them if they got the ball back and Coprich busted that one for 74 yards to pretty much ice it.  EW came back and scored again on another Vernon Adams td, this time to Shaq Hill.  Adams is at 425 yards passing and 3td's now, but it's probably too little too late.  Score is now 59-46, but I'm showing some kind of delay (weather maybe) with around a minute and half left.

Coprich has 258 yards rushing today and 4td's. He's been on an insane tear all season long.  I believe he has 13 consecutive 100 yard games now. A quick eye ball of my stats shows he's over 2,000 yards and 26td's rushing now on the season.  He's only a sophomore.

AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn freshman football player Jakell Mitchell was shot and killed Sunday morning at an apartment complex near the Auburn University campus.

Auburn Police Capt. Will Matthews told The Associated Press that police responded at 12:25 a.m. Sunday to a shots fired call the Tiger Lodge apartment complex, where the 18-year-old Mitchell was found. Mitchell was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Matthews said an investigation is ongoing and no suspects were in custody.

Coach Gus Malzahn said in a statement that he was "devastated" by Mitchell's death.

"I'm devastated and saddened by the passing of Jakell Mitchell. My thoughts and prayers are with Jakell's family and friends, who are suffering through this senseless tragedy," he said. "I know the Auburn Family is hurting, especially our players and coaches, and we are going to love and support them through this difficult time. We have lost a member of our family too young, too soon."

The tragedy came less than 12 hours after Auburn introduced Will Muschamp as their new DC.

Phil Steele touched on this on a podcast this week. I remember that Army joined C-USA in the late 90s, from 98-04. It was a disaster, they had 9 conference wins in 6 seasons, never more than 2 conference wins. Seven losing seasons, including a winless season in 2003

Steele said they changed to a more modern offense when they joined CUSA and lost a lot of the connections they had made in recruiting the option. Navy and Air Force reaped the rewards, getting a lot of recruits that may have gone to Army, and strengthening their recruiting ties with schools that run the option. Army eventually switched back to the option, but they are still struggling to overcome the recruiting disadvantage.

edit- just looked it up, they were coached by Todd Berry for four years in CUSA, he runs a spread at Louisiana Monroe now. He's been pretty successful there and runs an interesting offense.  They call it Funroe

Had two QBs on the field sometimes, with both throwing

UWW had a 30-14 lead at the break. Mount Union started the third with 17 unanswered to take the lead. UWW answered with a beautiful 75-yard screen for the TD. Some good stuff happening in Salem.
