I think you only need to look to college to see how few people can actually consistently hit FGs and those are people who have spent a ton of time training to do that and that alone. A 22 yarder isn't easy, you have to get it up over the line, the hardest part of the job. And you have to get the kick off quickly. Punter's usually can't, the motion is very different, and even the ones who do kickoffs, it isn't really the same as the quick short run-up and steep angle.

How often do college kickers miss extra points?

If you can make it 50% of the time you should be kicking in that situation.

I can't believe an NFL punter who knows they are the backup FG hasn't practiced enough to make a 20 yard FG half the time.

My friend whose in-laws are huge Seahawks fans (to his chagrin) must be going apeshit yet again. He's always muttering how Seattle has a horseshoe up their ass and gets the benefit from the officials.
Funny, as a Seattle fan I see it completely the other way. They seem to always get screwed by the officials.

Edit: And I don't complain about the officiating nearly as much as many do.

Ok, but there’s not another position on the field where there isn’t a “next man up”. Every position is subject to injury.

what you’re saying is true, but have someone who has practiced this and can give you a legit shot at it on your team (most likely your punter).

Against all odds, Jamal Adams has found himself in a worse situation than the one he left.
The 12-4 was smoke and mirrors. It's shitty coaching, trading too many high picks for guys who aren't providing enough value, and a QB that has completely lost his confidence.
It seemed like cracks were starting to show late last season. The Giants home loss in particular had me really scratching my head.

Is he the backup FG kicker? Punters aren't for many other teams (I remember one team had a DL do it), and he's a lefty, which means it screws up the backup holder's job (P is the holder) and changes all the protections.

Also, I really doubt teams want their punter messing with the rather delicate operation of their kicking motion by adding FGs, it's why nobody has 1 guy do both, even though it happens in college.

Honestly, if I were a coach who really wanted to have a backup for the rare situation where my kicker got hurt... I'd have one of my ST specialists, a gunner or something, cross train in it.

Has that penalty ever been called in NFL history? What fucking bullshit
They said the flag was thrown at the 12. There must be a guy whose job is to look specifically for that and it is probably never close on regular kicks.

I still think it is a dumb rule. Get rid of kick offs or let teams do what they want.

yeah that’s a “technically right” penalty. But… I’d like them to not call that there. That’s rough.
But isn't that exactly when you want it called ... when it could affect the outcome of the game?

You know ... like the tuck rule

I have no idea who the backup FG kicker is but I'm sure they have considered the possibility of an in-game injury (if they haven't thats coaching malpractice).

The fact that they might not have anyone on the roster they think can make a 20 yard FG 50% of the time is nuts.

Literally half of the stadium could do that with 5 minutes of practice with the team.

How is that any different than any other illegal formation call? That’s the rule, line up correctly.
It’s not. But it’s the same as an

Yes, I guess I shouldn’t say don’t call it. But it’s the same as a guy a couple inches off the line of scrimmage when he needed to be on it when a Hail Mary is caught.

it’s right, but as a neutral it just kinda sucks.

They absolutely could not. People really need to realize how hard kicking in the NFL from any distance is, if you grabbed someone out of the stands and gave them 5 minutes to practice maybe 10 in 100 even get the ball over the line
