I understand that parcells gets a lot of hate around here because of the way he acted during the week of the pats super bowl in 96. As someone who was only 12 at the time, can I get a quick recap of what happened? He just had one foot out the door for the jets job? Bailed on the team etc??

Eli is mistaken. Per NFL.com, he had 4 career tackles. Peyton had 9; wonder why he thought it was so many fewer. (Perhaps he isn’t counting plays where he just pushed the ball carrier out of bounds, even if he was credited for a tackle.)

Flew home from the Super Bowl on a private plane owned by the Jets, for one thing

He was already talking to the Jets during the SB prep week. I can live with the fact that he didn’t want to be the coach of the Pats anymore, but the Jets job would have been there for him after the SB. Just unforgivable not to focus on winning that game fully because he didn’t like Kraft.

And that was because he wasn’t the Gm? Hence the whole “let me shop for the groceries and cook” line?

Or he or the RB fumbled and he merely touched the recoverer down. GRONK!

He was hired by Victor Kiam and given full roster control. When Kraft bought the team he installed a GM.I’m sure Parcells still had a ton of input but he didn’t have complete control and he couldn’t handle that.

In retrospect Bobby Grier was a bad GM and Parcells drafts for the Pats were pretty great, but it all eventually led to BB. And anyway, just focus on the fucking Super Bowl.

Edit: also Kraft was looking for long-term stability and Parcells was basically coaching year-to-year. Given what we know about Kraft and franchise building it was destined to fail.

Yes, that's also why he left the Giants in 1991 and tried to go to the Bucs--he wanted to run his own show. He actually tried to leave the Giants after they won in 1986/87 for Atlanta, but the Giants wouldn't let him out of his contract.

I'm grateful for Parcells saving the Pats in NE, because there was a real danger of the team going to St. Louis if he didn't resurrect the fan interest in NE. But I used to refer to him as "The Whore" when discussing him, because his whole career he's chased money.

Which makes his final line to Eli, "Once a Giant, always a Giant" ironic. This guy coached the Pats and the Jets, and the Giants and the Cowboys. That's the football equivalent of managing the Sox and the MFYs, and the Dodgers and the Giants.

This is basically right. When he was hired it was inconceivable that the Pats could hire a coach like him and he injected instant credibility that was sorely needed. But the ending sucked.

Now all I can picture is the “Here comes the whoooore” TikTok meme with Bill Parcells face

Orthwein actually hired Parcells as part of the overall plan to move to St. Louis.

Parcells and Belichick are classic examples of the difference between "money guys" and "statue guys". Parcells is a money guy. If he has success, he's off to next the big payday as soon as he's free to cash in. Belichick is a statue guy. If Cleveland had given him a couple of more years, he would still be coaching there, and they'd be putting up a statue of him at that stadium once he retired. Instead he'll get one at Gillette when he finally hangs it up.

Nothing to show for it, but Brady throws an absolute dart into a tiny window that Brate drops, throws a perfect deep ball, then has crazy footwork in the pocket and throws a dime on the move. He’s so good.

Also holy shit Levy (I think), it’s GODwin, not Goodwin

Peyton is a football genius but idk how he would do coaching. He seethes with every play that isn’t well-executed.
