Come on guys step it up. We raised $45,000 to fight AIDS in 2010. We should be able to do $5 grand easy for this. I’m overseas for the next two weeks and am going to bring back a couple awesome things to auction. Dig deep and come up with something cool.

I fear I undersold this to some extent as well, which is on me.

I imagined a bit of pitch and catch with the board and Manny. We (and to the extent that @JoseBe and @Hyde's Pryde believed it, that's on me) imagined people would be pitching more stuff.

So less "Let's see what Rev can talk Manny into doing!" and more "Let's see how much for charity it will take to get Manny to watch a game with a SoSHer or go bowling or something!" But now I don't think that was clear.

Although even I didn't expect things to go where @OfTheCarmen took them. But it's an admirable spirit. I think...

Yo, @Hyde's Pryde , venerable sports artist Rip here. If I drew a picture of you, would you sign it, and we can auction it off on SoSH for the BAA? I'm thinking an action pic of you from one of your WS 2007 appearances, I can dig something up to work from. Examples of stuff I've drawn below:

You in? I'm hitting @Reverend too in case he needs to be the go-between, he can vouch for me.

So, I am making a living wage for the first time in my life and would like to donate a little bit. This happens to be the worst possible time because I just ordered a much needed treadmill before this thing started, so I wasn't going to be able to participate. However, I just had a mishap on the Amazon order that, long story short, turned into a $50 credit in my favor. I actually don't necessarily feel like that $50 credit was as necessary as I thought at the time, so I went and reordered my treadmill, but I would like to go ahead and donate that $50 to your cause. I do not need your socks or anything :), just knowing it's going to a good cause is enough.

Y'all got a paypal or something?

Ok, it's done, but I missed where I could put a comment to say it's from SOSH, lol. I have an email receipt if that helps track anything? Sorry, lol

Good luck guys!

I should add that MannyD’s efforts on this are fantastic. The sum total of assistance we got from the Sox or MLB on the aids truck was agreeing to let us use pictures without a lawsuit.

This is really great.

I want to emphasize that Manny's involvement is because this is more than the kind of vanity project that some athletes have, that and restaurants!

In my experience working in admissions at community colleges, I've discovered there's a bit of a disconnect between underprivileged students and the colleges. The students may be capable and eager, but they don't see themselves as college students. Or they aren't prepared for the placement tests so they have to take remedial classes for no credit, which frustrates them and makes them feel they don't belong. And then they just drop out.

So the basic idea here is to use sports to bridge that gap. If they want to use the cages and get professional level instruction, they have to put in the academic work. And also the work to take the tests which Rev assures me is, unfortunately, a different set of skills, but that's where we come in! We'll teach them what they need to know to get into college level courses.

Basically, "Show us your report card if you want to use the cages." Old school.

We've also begun bringing students athletes to practice and scrimmage with local college teams to get them used to being on campuses. It really helps them see themselves as someone who could be in college by hanging out with other athletes and seeing that they really are alike.

But we can do more, especially with the academic prep. And we have plans to do so. We have raised a lot of money for a facility and have some other donors lined up who are watching how much we can raise on our own, all "part of the game." So we are super appreciative of the support we're getting here.

Thank you!

Apologies if I've missed it, but is there an auction rules thread?

Not really. What kind of rules do you mean? We'll be slapping deadlines on to the threads soon, but pretty much anyone can start a thread to auction stuff off and set their own deadlines. Then, once the money is received by BAA, we will confirm receipt and the donor gets the item to the winner.

Is that helpful?

Ironically, I finally got a real job and have some money, and now that I have a real job I've been so busy that I haven't been on SoSH much (other than the stupid threads for stupid people) and missed this. I'm still trying to build a savings, but I'll toss in some cash. I kind of suck so the money would be better used to help kids.

Sent $50 over the weekend and didn't add anything saying SOSH, because I'm an idiot.

If you donate direct and want to make sure the whole SoSH angle gets credit for it, just PM me the name it was under and I can make sure that happens.

And thanks. This is good stuff not just for the money which is going to a great cause, but also to show other potential donors who like to see us making moves.

Geaux SoSH!! :)

If we followed your instructions and mentioned SoSH auction + our username, that good enough?

My auction threads are closed. Items have been shipped to winning bidders.

The two threads raised $850. I've added a Paypal donation to bring that total up to a round number.

Here's a cool quote from Kareem Abdul Jabbar who recently parted with some memorabilia.

“When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple,” Abdul-Jabbar wrote in his blog. “Sell it all. Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I’d rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future.”
Be Like Kareem... or our own Manny D.

Any way to introduce new auctions closer to opening day? I'm assuming traffic here picks up quite a bit right before/after opening day. Might be a prime time to add new things that would lead to the existing threads being bumped hopefully.

Well, all existing auctions are closed as of yesterday/today, unless otherwise specified (@Average Reds and @The Allented Mr Ripley have things going on, as they've specified and will close them when they "finish").

That said, I don't think anyone would stop anyone who wants to auction off anything for a good cause--I don't run this place. :)

That said, I want to thank everyone who has participated--this has been great.
