I assume the three have to be Redhogs, Redwolves, and WFT right? The rest are such trash.

I thought I heard today they weren't going to change their name. It's such a good story about how they stumbled into WFT. Some guy bought up all of the domain names they were considering, so they wouldn't be able to have a website, so they went with WFT, which I personally really like.

By using the word "Red" in their name, aren't they kind of preserving some of the racist history of their name? I'd think they would want to start fresh.

To the extent that some percentage of fans opposed to any name change will be placated by that very thing, I dont think the team necessarily sees it as a problem.

The Navy and Coast Guard will object to Armada
The Army will object to Brigade
The military, in general, and the Navy and Coast Guard, in particular, will object to Commanders
Half the country at any given time will object to Presidents

Other football teams might object to them being called a football team?

The XFL seems to be hanging around as a legal entity under The Rock's ownership, and they have a store selling DC Defenders gear, etc. Are they not holding that name? Hoax!

Defenders is idiotic. I’d prefer Special Teamers. I don’t mind Red Hogs in theory but I agree it is an echo of Redskins and should be avoided. Armada sounds the best, I think, but I prefer plural nouns. Brigade is similarly ok and makes a certain sense; a football team is sort of like a brigade.

It’s hard to pick a name. If we had to re-name the Red Sox I have no idea what I’d pick, assuming things like Scarlet Sox were off limits.

WFT is as good as anything.

Red Hogs would end up sounding like Red Dogs, aka Indian wild dogs, aka dholes.

It's problematic to pick a new name that's even tangentially "Indian", but if they go that route, they can be the D-Holes.

I still like Pigskins. I think all those choices stink. I’d just stay with Washington Football Team if those are my only options.

I think they should go "Red Brigade."
This is where my mind went, b/c it would infuriate so many people. In true WFT fashion none of them are any good, for many reasons mentioned here.

The best options have nothing to do with DC (No literal wolves in DC and while the Potomac runs through the city, the only Armada to enter that river was a NIssan Armada that got pushed in after being used in a crime) and the ones that do are completely uninspiring. I kind of want them to stick with WFT, so there can be "WTF WFT?" headlines when they fall short of expectations. Again. And again. Or waste talent. Again. Really anything that continues Snyder's failings, because screw him, he might be the worst owner in the league.

Washington Football Club (WFC) sounds a little better than WFT IMO. I know I'm a soccer fan, but I feel like most execs in pro sports still call their franchises clubs. Teams sounds juvenile to me, although I readily admit WFT is a real possibility whereas WFC isn't.

I hope they stick with WFT and let a nickname grow organically.

I thought they already announced that they weren't keeping WFT because they wouldn't be able to land the trademark. It gets my vote though.
I haven’t followed the legal angle closely, so I might be missing something. I would think, though, that they could register stylized versions of the mark now and place the basic word mark (“Washington Football Team”) on the supplemental register, then claim full trademark rights in the word mark in 5 years based on distinctiveness acquired during that time. I don’t know if they’d be willing to live with limited ability to police their brand during that time, but unless someone owns and is using WFT now (or has in the recent past), I don’t see why they couldn’t own that mark eventually.

"Red wolf" is a two-word phrase. Are they really just going to create the word "Redwolves?" St. John's is the "Red Storm" not the Redstorm.

Can't Jeff Bezos pay up already so they can name the team the Washington Belters?

Wish George Carlin was still around to give us a ruling.

As a Seattelite, I’d prefer the Washington Districts of Columbians.

or just Columbians as a tribute to our South American friends.

That's a lot of plurals.
Also, I'm not sure references to Columbus are really the right angle to take. As we try to move away from appropriating the names of persecuted indigenous peoples, maybe the poster boy for European colonization is a little off?
