As long as it's not my DC tax dollars funding them, I'm good. Though it has occurred to me that with the name change, I could actually follow them as my second team if Snyder gets forced out.
Cosigned.
Mayor Bowser is on the record of saying that she would like the team to play in DC, but also that the District couldn't match what Virginia is willing to pay. Winning hand for Bowser. I doubt Maryland offers anything close to whatever foolish amount VA is willing to pay.

The Quantico area of Northern VA? It's like halfway to Richmond.

The Camel City
Foxboro on the Potomac.

I guess they will just let the Ravens have the Maryland fans (the few that are left) and hope they can draw in more from Richmond. There are still some legacy Washington fans even down into North Carolina. Of course, Snyder will screw it up somehow.

Snyder has destroyed the DMV fan base. I grew up in Virginia Beach and the WFT was by FAR the pre-eminent pro franchise in our region for decades. Now? Who knows? Lotsa Navy folks so the local fandom is watered down anyway. Minimal media coverage. Moving south will prob not help. The traffic (as many have alluded to)which is already horrendous will now be borderline unmanageable.

Between here and everywhere.
I live in Montclair (which is sort of part of Dumfries, but also kinda not) - and traffic in this area is already a nightmare. If they put a stadium down here, I’ll have to plan on just..not leaving my house on Sundays.

My only hope is that they follow through on the propose extension of the Blue Line metro down here if they do put the stadium in. It won’t really help the traffic, but it will make my work commute during the week a little better.

Even 12 years ago when I moved to DC everything stopped for football games. It was the best time to go to the grocery store. Not so much now.

Right? During the glory years the whole city ( I was up in DC by then) would be in mourning after a regular season loss. The fanbase was nuts. In a good way. It’s a shame. The WFT are still my solid #2 and #1 NFC team. But it’s mostly hate watching now. Kinda like watching the Pats with my drunk uncles in the 70s/80s.

The Saints have been my NFC team for a long time, but I could see taking on the locals if Snyder wasn't there. But he's so personally loathsome, depraved, and criminal, that I can't deal. If they were my team, I'd stick with them, I guess, but there's no reason to take a passing interest with them if I don't have to.

Just a lil dust up, to be sure. A couple of million in damages. People died. But there was no fire, so it really wasn't anything, if you think about it.

Commanders DC Jack Del Rio on tweet comparing George Floyd protest to the insurrection at the Capitol on Jan 6th "Businesses are being burned down, no problem and then we have a dust-up at the Capitol, nothing burned down and we're gonna make that a major deal." @wusa9 #HTTC
and it now "Virginia senators say no Commanders stadium vote after Del Rio's Jan. 6 comments"
ASHBURN - Two key Democrats tweeted their disapproval of comments by Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio on Wednesday, when he referred to the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6 as a "dust-up."
Del Rio asked why the protests and destruction of property in the aftermath of George Floyd's death aren't being investigated with the same vigor.
"Why are we not looking into those things?" Del Rio said. "Because it's kind of hard for me to say, I can realistically look at it, I can look at images on the TV, people's livelihoods are being destroyed, businesses are being burned down, no problem. And then we have a dust-up at the Capitol, nothing burned down, and we're going to make that a major deal."

Five people died as a direct result of the Jan. 6 events, and four officers died by suicide in the days following.
State Sen. Jeremy McPike, who had previously expressed reservations about a bill authorizing a reported $300 million in bonds for the team, wrote on Twitter that the statements solidified his stance.

So, attempted coup d'état is 'dust up' in English? Good to know.

What a disgrace of a franchise. Get the hell out of DC, you assholes.

Coincidentally I skimmed DelRio’s tweets just last night, and he’s every bit the stereotypical, knuckle-dragging, NewsMax-addicted, Q-addled, dipshit.

Why is he apologizing? What a coward. Own your oft-stated beliefs, asshole.

This makes me so angry. Especially after going to his twitter. He should not have a job.
I don't know. Maybe the best punishment is to try and coach players now.

In other words, if he gets fired now, he's a martyr. If he gets fired after a 2-15 season where the players turn on him (along with just tweeting whatever they want bc of his precedent), he's just a bad coach.

The best punishment is working for Dan Snyder.

What the hell is this sentence "The Commanders have moved from a team that largely supported conservative causes under former team president Bruce Allen to a team that has become one of the most progressive in the league under new president Jason Wright, having built what they describe as "the most diverse leadership team in the NFL.""

Jewish owner, Black team president, Latino head coach, white nationalist defensive coordinator, ginger quarterback. If that's not diversity, what is?

I have no problem with the "diverse" part of the statement, but diverse does not equal progressive, and the piece provides no evidence of progressiveness.

Del Rio was fined 100k by the NFL for calling 1/6 a dust up.
It was the team (more specifically the head coach), not the league. Ron Rivera's statement said "I have decided to fine Coach Del Rio $100,000." Maybe I just haven't paid enough attention to announcements of team fines, but I don't recall a coach announcing a fine as his own personal decision before.

Oh, thank you. I thought the ESPN flash said the NFL levied the fine. Or I was incepted.

Commanders also put out a pretty unequivocal statement from Rivera. I'm surprised, to be honest. This organization doesn't deserve him.

View: https://twitter.com/Commanders/status/1535323474406920193

STATEMENT FROM HEAD COACH RON RIVERA

This morning I met with Coach Del Rio to express how disappointed I am in his comments on Wednesday. His comments do not reflect the organization's view and are extremely hurtful to our great community here in the DMN. As we saw last night at the hearings, what happened on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 was an act of domestic terrorism. A group of citizens attempted to overturn the results of a free and fair election, and as a result, lives were lost and the Capitol building was damaged. Coach Del Rio did apologize for commends Wednesday and he understands the distinction between the events of that dark day and peaceful protests, which are a hallmark of our democracy. He does have the right to voice his opinion as a citizen of the United States and it most certainly his constitutional right to do so. However, words have consequences and his words hurt a lot of people in our community. I want to make it clear that our organization will not tolerate any equivalency between those who demanded justice in the wake of George Floyd's murder and the actions of those on January 6 who sought to topple our government.

After reflecting on the situation and circumstances, I have decided to fine Coach Del Rio $100,000, which the team will donate to the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund. I feel strongly that after our conversation this morning, he will have a greater understand for the impact of his language and the values that our team stands for.
Any typos are probably mine.

Yeah, that’s how you do it. Good for Ron. I hope he coaches somewhere I can root for his team next.

Totally agree. Rivera has put up with an unbelievable amount of shit since taking this job (including cancer but I think that’s better than just about anything he’s had to deal with from the team).

I also think the decision to levy a significant fine on Del Rio rather than fire him is the right move as loathsome as Jack’s statement was.

I hope Del Rio pays the fine and then some players refuse to report if he’s there and he gets fired anyway.

Truthfully it benefits him, too, because you look a lot less stupid wearing a leather jacket when you’re not an actual coach on an NFL sideline.

the fact that this team is based in the situs of the attack gives the statement and fine some additional resonance, not that any was needed.

He and Snyder dont deserve each other....for totally opposite reasons.
DelRio's firing wouldve been appropriate of they linked his statement to something like "such abject stupidity, ignorance and dishonesty that it calls into question DelRio's fitness and whether he can be trusted."
