Yeah, that date (a Wednesday, so no other real reason to use it?) makes me think Hogs is squarely on the table.

Team President also announced "Wolves"/"RedWolves" is no longer in the running because of trademark difficulties:

Early on we understood Wolves -- or some variation of it -- was one of our fan favorites. As I've said all along, we take feedback from our fans seriously, and because of your interest in this name, we put Wolves on a list of options to explore fully. Once we began looking into Wolves, however, we became aware of a notable challenge: trademarks held by other teams would limit our ability to make the name our own. And without Wolves, variations like RedWolves wouldn't have been viable either for these and other reasons.

As someone who thinks the "Football Team" is a great name and a departure from the mostly interchangeable animal mascots, agreed with others it's a shame.

I actually really like the "Football Team" name as well, as well as their current logo. It's unique and felt silly at first, but it grew on me. It'd be great though if they drum up all of this publicity to announce the new name as the... Washington Football Franchise!

If that is the direction, I just hope they just go with Washington Hogs rather than RedHogs or BattleHogs or whatever.
Pigskins seems to be the local fan-favorite for a hog-oriented name (and maybe an overall favorite replacement name): it has a football connection, a Hogs connection, and allows the familiar 'skins nickname.

Yeah that has been discussed several times in this thread and seems popular.

Use some sort of bad ass, wild boar looking logo like this. Keep the burgundy go more gold than yellow and have the decal facing forward on each side of the helmet.

Could be some PETA trouble with that one. If bullpen outraged them, that really won't go over well. In typical(for them) fashion, they bumble-fucked their way to a very good, unique one with WFT. And will now go away with from that with one of these other lame ideas.

They changed the direct. Maybe it was a red herring all along or maybe they realized it was blowing the surprise I dunno
Now I get that charity. But it's a charity based out of Georgia. It's a long shot that Snyder would give a fuck about a charity anyway, but I doubt he'd direct it to one in Georgia.

So, the chair of the board of that charity is a trademark lawyer for a firm that helped represent a DOE employee who won a judgment of $200K after being demoted in response to repeatedly complaining about her coworkers' repeated use of the word "redskins" in front of her.

I'm leaning toward guerrilla marketing.

That would fit the Feb 2 announcement date.

If they spent a year doing research to come up with that…well, I guess if Dan Snyder is running the process anything is possible

For funsies, go to WashingtonAdmirals.com

Edit: Never mind, don't. It doesn't go to the WFT site anymore. It supposedly did earlier today

If it really is Groundhogs and they announced the announcement date today (1/4), you'd think that they'd have acquired the URL prior to 1/1, wouldn't you?

If it is Groundhogs I can't wait for all the headline writers that think they are clever:

"Groundhogs live up to their name, rush for 170 yards in beating Dallas"

"Groundhogs defy their name, take to the air to beat the Giants"

Or “Groundhogs are afraid of their own shadows, turn it over six times in crushing loss”

I actually don’t hate Groundhogs, although I would have just gone with some play on an actual hog/pig. Pigskins being the pretty logical choice. Commanders, Armada, or some other military reference is all pretty terrible.

Groundhogs is a terrible name IMO. There is nothing inherently dynamic, powerful, or intimidating about the animal. The headlines, as mentioned above, will write themselves. Not in love with the other contenders (still think Redtails was the literal perfect name in that you would go from a name that was offensive to a particular demographic to one that would honor one) but would prefer something like Admirals to Groundhogs

I love Groundhogs, though I suspect if it’s in that zone it’ll be Red Hogs (please not RedHogs without a space, this isn’t single-A baseball) or just Hogs alone. All of them are super strong and distinctive. Gets history and organic, fan-driven nicknaming in there; super unique and will sell a ton of merchandise, and avoids referencing the old name too closely (I don’t think they should have the term “skin” anywhere near the new name).

And yeah, the headlines. The newspaper unions should be lobbying hard for this.

Cowboys can’t wrangle Hogs
Hogs trample Giants
PIGS FLY! Hogs take to the air, best Denver to win Super Bowl
Hogs sloppy in loss to Patriots

Color scheme can stay too (I bet they add a touch more red, though.). And if they actually go full Groundhogs, they will have a day a year where they get unique national media coverage.

Now I’ll be kind of be bummed if they don’t do it.

Looks like it might be The Admirals.
https://www.mediaite.com/sports/boomer-esiason-may-have-just-spoiled-the-washington-football-teams-name-reveal/
“The Admirals,” Esiason told Jerry Recco and Gregg Giannotti on their WFAN morning radio show Boomer and Gio. “I’m reporting it’s the Admirals.”

Esiason later added that he’s not breaking the story, but the damage was already done on a 50,000-watt New York radio station with a show that gets nationally televised by CBS Sports Network.

“Do you feel like you shouldn’t have done that?” Gio asked. “I can tell he’s regretting it.”

“Why? I can’t stand that organization anyway!” Esiason fired back. “Who cares, the organization sucks!”

I expect Chris Berman has already cued up Groundhog Day references for losing and winning streaks.

Washington loser of three straight, seem to keep reliving the same day, already down 7, when this pick 6 put them down, 2 scores, they fumbled the ensuing kickoff and BOOM 21 nothing! Time to hire Bill Murray only he can make this end!

I like Groundhogs. It belongs to the "self-aware" trend of animal names that aren't overtly threatening or dangerous that brought us the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Admirals is ridiculous. What is this, 1942? Will they also be segregated?

When I hear a generic military term like Admiral my mind doesn't jump to segregation, but DC doesn't strike me as a military town. There's military there, but it's not the same kind of folks that inhabit military towns like Norfolk, Bremerton, Jacksonville, etc. It's why the minor league hockey team in Norfolk is the Admirals. It's why a football team in Norfolk went by Destroyers.

It’s also not particularly specific to DC. groundhogs I mean. They’re kindof all over. If you have an animal, it should be specific to a place, no? Most teams have that connection, no?
Pelicans, Devil Rays, Cardinals, Bruins, Lions, Tigers…
Hmmm
On second though, I guess the animals don’t matter. By us still. Groundhogs?

I cant you guys skipped the whole ‘woodchuck’ angle.
‘How many TD’s will the woodchucks chuck…?’

Are we canceling the term "Admiral" now? I can't keep up.

Why would Admiral invoke thoughts of segregation? It is a currently used rank in the Navy. I think it sucks as a team name but I don't understand why it would make you think of 1942 and segregation.

Admirals doesn't really seem like a word that fits with Washington, since George Washington was a general, not an admiral.

Groundhogs, Redhogs, or just Hogs would be better, especially since "Hogs" has a connection to the team's history.

A team without any version of blue in their color scheme using Admirals just seems awkward.

They lucked out with Football Team. It's unique and in the hands of a good marketing team they could have done some interesting things with it.

Groundhogs sounds like a name you'd see in Single-A baseball, IMHO. Just "Hogs" seems pretty good, compared to the alternatives.
