Victorino Thumb Surgery

Shane Victorino had surgery on his right thumb yesterday.
 

Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino is expected to be ready for Spring Training after undergoing successful surgery on his right thumb on Monday.

Dr. Thomas Graham performed the nerve release procedure on Victorino in Cleveland. Victorino dealt with some thumb issues during the season, jamming it against the Orioles on Sept. 18 and missing the next two games.

What is it with the Sox and thumbs?

They want to see if it would heal on it's own. They knew the recovery time would still be okay if they wait a little while, so they did. I would like to get some knowledge of what the surgery actually does, because I've never heard of it.

Good question. Maybe they thought it would improve with rest. And I would assume that the nerve release procedure was not as serious as a tendon or ligament repair, so the resulting recovery time would be less.

Until our resident expert arrives (I stayed at Holiday Inn in the last few years), I think nerve compression injuries are not always easy to diagnose.  Nerves are really long suckers and the place where you feel the symptoms can be caused by compression in different places.  I also think the symptoms that you feel with nerve compression can be caused by other stuff that has to be eliminated.  Last, I think surgery is not always the first option.  I get the sense it can be a pretty tricky procedure, depending on the compression.
 
Bicycle riders get a form of this, thought to be caused by compression from the handlebars.
