Yes, we were +1 coming in (2-0 and 1-2) and Panama were -1 coming in (1-3 and 2-1)
Got it, thanks. Just trying to calibrate who all to be mad at and to what degree.yes we would have had a +2 differential (we ended even) and Panama had a +1

I don’t think making it harder for yourselves qualifies as a reason that the group wasn’t actually easy to advance from."Easy" is doing a lot of work here. They just lost 1 - 0 to the Elo #5 team, they beat the sad sack, and they lost a game where one of their players lost his mind and got himself kicked out of the game 20 minutes in. The group always hinged on their result against Panama, it was the game where they could least afford that kind of stupidity.
A blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a whileBut he's not wrong with what he's saying right now.
Guy wanted nothing more than to earn a gritty 0-0 tie to advance. A real leader of men he is.Dempsey ripping Berhalter for getting excited about Bolivia’s goal.
I guess it's a matter of whose perspective you're looking at. Do we think Berhalter coached Weah to clock the guy?I don’t think making it harder for yourselves qualifies as a reason that the group wasn’t actually easy to advance from.
I don’t recall ever seeing a coach react like that.Dempsey ripping Berhalter for getting excited about Bolivia’s goal.
He was an ok defender on teams that didn’t win.. he doesn’t know what success looks like and pretends he knows what success looks like. It’s moments like this that make we wonder if the contrarian blowhard is just schtick that he turns off and on or if he just stumbles into the occasional correct observation like the proverbial broken clock.
He’s been a shitty manager for far longer than that one decision.. and that’s not the only time a player has made a horrible decision under HIS watch.. he’s been horrible for years.I guess it's a matter of whose perspective you're looking at. Do we think Berhalter coached Weah to clock the guy?
It’s the trajectory this squad is on over the past year - needing PKs to get to the Gold Cup semis and then going out to Panama, a limp display against Germany that should have been a chance to take a run at a traditional power, another limp display against Slovenia (maybe more forgivable given Slovenia’s showing today), getting throttled by Colombia, and now not getting out of the group.I guess it's a matter of whose perspective you're looking at. This is about the only time I’m agreeing with all of what he’s saying.I did about 60 seconds of Lalas and turned off the TV. Don’t know how you all can take any more of this tonight.
I was agreeing, too, which is how I knew something was very wrong. This is about the only time I’m agreeing with all of what he’s saying.
Much as i dislike him... he was a key player on the most success Copa America squad the USMNT has ever had and arguably the most successful WC team the USMNT has ever had. He's an asshole and a talking head, but by US Soccer standards.... he's had a lot of success. He was an ok defender on teams that didn’t win.. he doesn’t know what success looks like and pretends he knows what success looks like.
No other country brings back Gregg after the WC.. there was zero reason to bring him back. It’s the trajectory this squad is on over the past year - needing PKs to get to the Gold Cup semis and then going out to Panama, a limp display against Germany that should have been a chance to take a run at a traditional power, another limp display against Slovenia (maybe more forgivable given Slovenia’s showing today), getting throttled by Colombia, and now not getting out of the group.
The home WC is too big a deal to see if Gregg can right the ship.
I think this is one of the least talented teams I’ve seen the US field.. OR.. Gregg is a fucking horrific manager and doesn’t deserve another game.

Presumably he'd be giving up money to quit rather than be fired, right?Berhalter appears to not have had the dignity to resign so he's going to make them fire him
yeah probablyPresumably he'd be giving up money to quit rather than be fired, right?
He was already fired and fought to get this job back.. he has been given no reason to think he should quit by USMNTPresumably he'd be giving up money to quit rather than be fired, right?
This is some 2002 World Cup erasure which I won’t stand for because that one’s the reason I am in the position today to be annoyed by this result.Much as i dislike him... he was a key player on the most success Copa America squad the USMNT has ever had and arguably the most successful WC team the USMNT has ever had. 2002 is the other one for the arguably. both round of 16 close losses to excellent teams. This is some 2002 World Cup erasure which I won’t stand for because that one’s the reason I am in the position today to be annoyed by this result.
What an unserious lightweight. Big-timing his way back to the boonies of Peruvian club football.Head ref refused to shake Pulisic’s hand.. sounds right
It really is amazing how different USSF is than basically every federation.
This Copa was our last high quality, high intensity soccer before the WC. After this, the rest of the world turns its attention to qualifying while we schedule friendlies against Canada, Mexico, and the national that bomb out of their continental competitions early.I think this is one of the least talented teams I’ve seen the US field.. OR.. Gregg is a fucking horrific manager and doesn’t deserve another game.
True but let’s not pretend that we were advancing if not for that. Can't afford to go down a man less than 20 minutes in against your main competition for advancement. I'm not sure how you coach Weah to not do a galaxy-brain maneuver like that.
If you hypothesize a draw with Panama instead of a loss, then yeah, we were advancing if not for that (though who knows what happens if Panama know they need another goal against Bolivia).True but let’s not pretend that we were advancing if not for that.
This has been a crap tournament.
As noted above, fire Greg. Not in anyway gloating, but shocking to me Canada advanced and USA did not.
It’s easy to under why this bureaucracy loves Gregg, they all speak the same dumb MBA language. It really is amazing how different USSF is than basically every federation.
Most of the world you suffer a humilating loss at home after months of mediocrity and the manager is fired and his boss resigns right after.
USSF will have 3 weeks of meetings and pay 350k to consultants before they make a decision, then if they fire Gregg they'll have another 6 weeks of meetings to try and find the new guy.
We have lost players to red cards in tournaments 4 times in the last year. Pulisic is lucky not to have taken another against Panama. That’s unacceptable. If the players aren’t mentally prepared to deal with the difficulties of a CONCACAF match, a lot of that falls on the manager. If you hypothesize a draw with Panama instead of a loss, then yeah, we were advancing if not for that (though who knows what happens if Panama know they need another goal against Bolivia).
That’s the alpha and omega for me and why I’m done with Greg. Whatever credit I gave him for getting this young team to play for each other and with a consistent (if limited) approach, it’s all done now.….snip…

Fine, take away the goal for Uruguay. A 0-0 draw ain't doing it. Three goals in 3 games, 1 in the last 2, is the issue. Can’t you see them blaming this on the ref instead? Until they prove me wrong I assume the federation are a bunch of cowards and won’t do the right thing.
