This is a disgrace.

Why do you say that? We don;t know for sure that he didn't adequately report it. He's not a saint by any means, but he's not the abuser in the story.

Good showing of team spirit and loyalty there in Columbus.

Urban and Shelly, you're welcome in Chestnut Hill!

I can't tell if this sarcasm or not.

Perhaps everyone in this photo is just stopping by the Meyer rally on their way home from the Courtney Smith rally. If so, I'd really view them in a different light. But I doubt that's the case.

I'm no activist. The last time I marched was in my town's little league parade when I was probably about 10 years old. I've never even voted. So I'm hardly some hardened social warrior vocally opining on every perceived injustice I see. But it's plain even to me that it takes a very special kind of stupid for these idiots get out there and publicly show that their outrage over this whole situation is about how Meyer is being treated.

I'm glad I get to hate Ohio State again now that Joe Burrow has transferred to LSU.

All of that is inconsequential though and a gigantic red herring. Did Meyer tell a superior about abuse allegations, yes or no?

Seems pretty obvious that he did report it, if only to be in technical compliance with the policy. (If he had not reported it, I don't understand why OSU wouldn't have immediately refuted his claim.) It is still a fireable offense for him to have lied about it the way he did at the media day.

More interesting to me is that Meyer is pretty obviously blackmailing the Ohio State University by letting them know that if they take him down for this, he'll spill everything. He's doing it out in the open for all to see and given that we haven't really heard anything recently, it's probably going to work.

No comments on the new allegations?

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/urban-meyer-risk-legendary-career-one-troubled-assistant-004851272.html

The latest and most lurid bombshell allegations dropped Friday by Stadium.com’s Brett McMurphy complete the portrait of former Buckeyes wide receivers coach Zach Smith as a profoundly troubled Ohio State employee. Self-made photographs allegedly of Smith having sex with an Ohio State staffer in the football facility; photographs of Smith’s penis during a White House visit to honor the Buckeyes’ 2014 nation title team; and a shipment of sex toys to the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex were all part of the revelations McMurphy published Friday.

Shows Meyer has absolutely no control over the program.

When he is coaching in Week 4, remember that.
I think it shows the opposite. He's in complete control. Smith is a good "strength coach." That's what matters most (or exclusively) to the man in charge.

Pete Thamel checking in.

There was a cynical notion on the outside when Ohio State announced the investigation that it would be a whitewash that nudges Meyer back to the sideline as soon as possible. The reality has been quite the opposite, according to multiple sources.

The Ohio Attorney General reportedly set a budget of $500,000 for the New York City law firm, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, that’s handling the investigation from the outside. They are not to receive more than $1,620 per hour, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, it’s become increasingly clear as the investigation has unfolded that it has been rigorous and meticulous. Sources told Yahoo Sports the interviews have spanned different departments, and included checking cell phone records, email correspondence and conducting multiple interviews with multiple parties over the two weeks.
Ohio State has been careful not to define what it’s specifically looking into. A news release on Aug. 5 simply calls it, “the investigation involving Urban Meyer.” While the domestic abuse allegations against former assistant coach Zach Smith prompted the probe, the investigation has inevitably gone deeper the past two weeks. The general sense of the investigation is that it has stretched far beyond whether Meyer followed proper protocols in regards to the one specific allegation against Smith in 2015. “Once investigators and the media start looking into something and show up on your campus, oftentimes predictably much more is going to be found beyond the narrow context of the original scope of the investigation,” said Stu Brown, an Atlanta-based attorney who is not affiliated with the case. “Ohio State is a typical example of that.”

Yeah, but who are the sources close to the investigation? If you were planning a whitewash number, wouldn’t you want to get the word out about how thorough and far reaching your investigation had been- make the wash that much more white?

How’s that for cynical....

The wording of a suspension will be interesting.

a) hiring a known wife beater
b) following only the letter of the law but not doing enough to help a victim
c) lying to the press about informing the school

I think the wording would probably be vague to include all three without singling one out. Now, if Meyer never actually told his superiors would they actually say that and fire him? I’m not sure they do unless an outside, independent organization in investigating as well (NCAA of Title IX people).

Canderson, do you think any of this impacts Ohio State recruiting, in football and or wrestling?
I don't have any idea about wrestling, I know nothing about how that sport operates.

For football, I can see losing Smith would cost some recruits maybe but I doubt it amounts to much of anything. As long as Urban wins, Urban will get almost anyone he wants (like Saban).

Yes, the institution is greater than the coach. Ohio State will continue at a high level regardless of how the school disciplines Urban. The only thing this crisis does is make the big bosses think about a potential replacement for Urban down the road. Not a bad thing for the school.

Strong recruiting rivals will, of course, use this sorry episode when trying to win over the parents of potential recruits that Ohio State also covets.

Guess the lawyers told them that he didn't violate the contract and they would have to eat the money.

Smith and Urban did not properly comply, but acted in good faith and did not deliberately lie.

Per pc.

What a douche. He wishes he had known more so he could have taken action more quickly. He did everything humanly possible to keep the details off his radar so he wouldn’t have to fire the guy. So he wouldn’t have to take action quickly. He fired the guy 9 years after the dude threw his pregnant wife into a wall. Urban should just stop talking altogether, fake a throat disease? I’m sure he can come up with something. Should be easy since it won’t be the truth.

Zach Smith's attorney put out this disgraceful statement with Zach's approval: "Zach Smith married a woman he should not have married. Vengence against her ex-husband regrettably resulted in collateral damage to Urban Meyer, and The Ohio State University. Trying cases in the media is a dangerous precedent for every coach in America."

It’s not even 3 full weeks, he’s allowed to run practices weeks 2 and 3 just can’t coach. And I’m sure there won’t be headsets involved. They’d never do anything like that. Nope.

Did not properly comply? What does that mean specifically?
It must mean some pretty technical hair slicing. Like he reported the general allegation, but maybe failed to report additional information when he got more detail. Or failed to report the severity of it. I’m guessing if he was looking to keep him on staff (which he did for 8-9 years) he watered down any reporting hoping it would go away. Or maybe they didn’t report it properly up the ladder. Skipped reporting it to key personnel that would have taken it more seriously, but reported it to personnel that might stick it in a drawer.

Investigation report: "We learned Coach Meyer has sometimes had significant memory issues in other situations where he had prior extensive knowledge of events. He has also periodically taken medicine that can negatively impair his memory, concentration & focus"

Honestly, his reputation has taken a huge and deserved hit, which is far more important than a longer suspension. Firing him was never a real possibility.

He's always been a sleaze bag and always will be. The 30 for 30 on him someday will be informative and entertaining.

Oh, and those quotes are priceless and beyond stupid and add even more credence to his tainted legend.

Urban Meyer has never had a reputation for anything other than being a football coach.

His “punishment” and the incredibly cowardly way this was handled - Blaming Meyer’s medications for his poor memory? Really? - are all you need to know about the leverage Meyer had over OSU during this process.

Look for the public statement clearing Jim Jordan and praising him as an effective leader in about two weeks.
