My annual maintenance is underway. I spent a good part of Sunday doing prep work. Right now the site is down for a few moments twice a day for backups, I hope to fix that. If it’s down for more than five minutes then either 1. It’s down and I don’t know about it or 2. I did a part of an upgrade that did something that I didn’t want it to do. I will try to do my best giving folks a heads up.

I don’t really have a good way to notify folks if it’s down for awhile so I guess I’ll just post something to our twitter account if it is down by my doing.

Thanks Nip. Just curious... is the nightly 8:05 blip in the server a back-up thing?
Yeah. It’s a hosted database and I don’t have a ton of control over it. I suppose I technically do but the thing has been running for a solid 6 years now and the next time I change anything will be to shut it down.

It was more the systems geek in me that was curious. If this is the worst thing that we have to worry about, we're doing quite well.

I don't know if it is said nearly as much as it should, but this site is extremely well run.

It started running well when I stopped touching it :). It’s five load balanced web servers, two elastic search servers, a dev server and two hosted databases. The database backs up for thwt brief period daily and for me to tinker with it would involve a restart which I want to avoid at all costs until I actually upgrade it. The reason the upgrade is taking so long is literally everything needs to be upgraded - xenforo is a number of versions behind and I need to step the upgrades. Each of those upgrades have specific php / mods so it’s like having to setup five dev environments to get it done before it officially gets done.
