Just saw something in baseball, I've never seen. Col @ StL

2 outs, runner on 1st. Strike 3 dropped but goes right in front of the plate. Wolters throws to 2nd with no one covering instead of the easiest of throws to 1st.

Just saw a replay of this. My initial thoughts were that he didn’t realize it was strike 3 and just saw a runner try to steal, or he didn’t realize there were 2 outs. But video clearly shows he sees the batter take off for 1st, looks over and then decided to throw the ball into Center field. Weird all around.

Rangers turned a 5-4 triple play last night. Bases load, no outs. Low liner to 3rd, one hopped. 3rd baseman Profar stepped on 3rd for out #1. Then tagged the runner who was on 3rd who had strayed off the bag for out #2. Then threw to 2nd for out #3 (a force out). Then Odor tagged the runner between 1st and 2nd, but it was moot as he was already forced. Apparently it was the first 5-4 triple play in the majors in over 100 years. It's more rare than an unassisted triple play

I think the rare part is that it was the first triple play where the batter wasn't one of the outs since 1912. - no the 5-4 part (I seem to remember one of those somewhat recently).

edit: Most recent 5-4 TP that I found was 9/12/07 https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PHI/PHI200709120.shtml

Trea Turner thrown out advancing on a walk.

WASHINGTON -- An unusual play unfolded in the first inning on Tuesday night between the Nationals and Cardinals, as Trea Turner was called out after advancing on the bases following a walk to Bryce Harper.

After drawing a walk of his own from Cardinals right-hander John Gant, Turner attempted to steal second base on a 3-2 pitch to Harper. Although Harper took the pitch for ball four, Yadier Molina threw down to second base and shortstop Paul DeJong held the tag on Turner as his foot came off the base.

Todd Frazier made a nice catch on Monday's game against the Dodgers, in foul territory, falling into the stands.
Now he admits that the ball he showed the umpire wasn't the game ball, but a rubber one he picked up after he dropped the real one

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24593957/mets-todd-frazier-comes-clean-fake-catch?ex_cid=espnapi_public

Here is the video from SportsNet NY showing this
The best part is his presence of mind to throw it into the stands. As I watched the video I was thinking “but what’s he going to do with the ball?” Quick thinking.

Also, does the fan who caught it (when it’s tossed back into the stands) appreciate that what he just caught is so much better than an ordinary foul ball? Or does he feel cheated that it’s not a REAL major league ball?

Not unusual per se, but the best stare at HR, bat flip, slow trot you'll see.

The bat flip is one thing, the slowest jog ever another but he SHOVED the catcher.

Dude needs to be benched for a week. Or demoted. Fuck that guy.

Demoted? He plays in Canada’s semi-pro Intercounty Baseball League. I don't think that is possible.

Edit: and if you read the article, apparently he hurt (or possibly tore) his groin the inning before, accounting for the slow jog. Doesn't explain the flip, though.

Ah, assumed it was minor leagues.

The SHOVE, guys. The SHOVE.

Time to revive the thread for 2019...

Notre Dame - UVA last night. First and second, two outs, ground ball up the middle seemingly drives home the tying run for ND. Only the runner coming from first over runs second and gets tagged out before the run can score as the CF smartly threw to second rather than attempt to get the lead runner at the plate. UVA wins.

That's a heck of a heads up play

How about this one. Runners on 1st and 2nd, and a successful sac bunt. First baseman throws the ball back to the pitcher who.... throws the ball into the dugout without requesting time first. It's a 2 base award, and both runners are awarded home. Those were the only runs the Volunteers scored in the 2-1 win.

Today the Cards' Bader got HBP twice with the bases loaded and also scored from 2nd on a 2 run wild pitch.
Not a great day for Dodger pitching.

Bases loaded, 1 out, Jason Kipnis hits a weak grounder to second that appears to be an inning-ending double play... or at least an out... or apparently a 2-run fielder's choice. I mean... just... Orioles. This capped off a 6-rbi night for Kipnis with two home runs.

Reminds me a little of the game the Red Sox lost back in 2000 (I think) when they had runners on 2nd and 3rd, 1 out, down by a run. Batter hits what should have been a game tying sac fly, but Carl Everett got thrown out trying to advance to 3rd before the runner (I want to say Trot Nixon) could score. That season in a nutshell.

I remember that well. I can’t remember the runner out at 3rd, but it was definitely Nixon at the plate. It was 100% his fault - all he had to do was run full speed instead of jogging the last half to the plate - but he didn’t get any criticism because he was a dirt dog. Or something.

edit: runner not rubber

Nixon escaped criticism because any perceived lack of hustle on his part was eclipsed by the epic boneheadedness of Everett trying to advance to third on the play. There was absolutely nothing to gain from trying to get to third in that situation, particularly on a fly ball to left field at Fenway Park. He stays put, Nixon probably scores, and the game is tied with the winning run on second and two outs. At worst, they go to the 10th tied. At best, Valentin gets a hit and drives him home and they win the game.

right here
And if the situation were reversed Everett would have been killed for being lazy while Nixon would have been defended by people saying he was just being an aggressive dirt dog who played the game the right way.
No other reason. Nope. Nothing to see here.

I have to disagree with this, to a degree. Getting to 3rd accomplishes a couple of things: it makes a wild pitch / passed ball --> game winning run possible (or catcher's interference, etc. - plays that wouldn't score a man from 2nd). And given how shallow LF in Fenway is, as you mention, means a base hit to left is a guaranteed run. We've seen plenty of guys get thrown out trying to score from second on a base hit to left.
