I'm really curious to see what happens with Rousey. Her not doing media says either she still has emotional issues and she'll crack tonight or she's mega-focused and didn't want the distraction. I'm leaning towards emotional issues. I think she gets beat by an inferior fighter and retires immediately.

Good scores. Great fight. Wow that kid is talented and entertaining. Of course, he should've ko'd Cruz when he had the chance instead of mugging. He's lucky that didn't bite him in the ass.

He was awesome in the ring. I was talking about my impression of how he carries himself outside the ring.

There's no doubt that was an impressive performance, however. I'm coming around on him because of that.
He just gave his belt to an orphan. An orphan with diseases. Say sorry.

Man they can't even find a 3 second clip where Ronda looks like she knows how to through a punch.

Wow, Rousey is the female Mike Tyson. I'd be surprised if she has much of a Hollywood career after this embarrassment, either. It's not like she can act.

- Taverdyan should be taken out and shot. She's done. I will alway wonder what would have happened if she had went to San Jose and trained and learned with a bunch of champs with backgrounds like her at AKA.

-I am so fucking excited for Cody v. Dillashaw. TJ's takedowns tonight were fucking ridiculous. Garbrant's performance was something I did not think was possible against Cruz.

Of course, he should've ko'd Cruz when he had the chance instead of mugging. He's lucky that didn't bite him in the ass.
I was certain that he was going to face karmic justice for that (wildly entertaining) bullshit in the 5th round.

So who is beating Nunes? Cat Z. did once, but she needs to win at least one fight to get a shot at the belt.

I don't know if I've ever been so right about anything in my life as I was about Ronda's mediocrity. She's lucky she came along at a time in the sport's development when her one trick could get her to the top. Five years from now, she wouldn't be a club fighter.

GF - what do yo see in Rousey that makes you think she has the talent or reflexes or footwork or speed to be successful regardless of how she trained? She watched those punches hit her in the eyeball like Wade Boggs taking ball 1.

Forget retirement. Someone better be on Ronda's suicide watch. She doesn't really have a Hollywood career without the fighting. And she just spent the last year getting ready...for that. Hopefully she has a good nest egg saved up from her time in the sun.

Unless she's on screen while actively kicking people's asses in the cage, which was basically always 99% of the sell there, Rousey is simply not Hollywood Hot enough to take acting beyond gimmicky B movie appeal. Maybe one of 2 decent filler roles in the next year, but for the most part her A list status just died.

That Cody fight was something. Completely underestimated him there going in. Dude is a stud.

So, what happened here was roughly:

1) Rousey dominates using a strategy that no one can stop because no one is trained/good/athletic enough to stand up and hit her as she tries to grapple.
2) All of her competitors learn to stand up and hit her.
3) She gets hit.
4) She tries in vain to learn to hit back.
5) She gets hit again.

Essentially. Look at early UFC. It was a new sport. She was one of the first one's in. She had one special skill and a lifetime of training. Most women don't have any fight training. It's not like dudes coming over from wrestling or boxing. She beat a bunch of truck drivers and bus stop hobos. Then the sport grew up and she started fighting people who had some skill and she got totally exposed. She has no legacy. She's the equivalent of a caveman artist. Yeah, nice job etching the stick figures. It's not a masterpiece.

I don't think she wanted to go to a big place like AKA, which is dumb on her part, but there are other small camps that are lightyears ahead of Taverdyan like Ray Longo or even up with GSP in Montreal.

Nunes is very good, on the ground and standing up, and in her prime. Her fighting in Brazil against Cyborg would be insane, but that would probably have to wait until Nunes wipes out the division and moves up.

So satisfying to see Lousy get beat like a school bell. No skills, no class, and once again no belt and perhaps no Hollywood career.

Men's bantam division is just STACKED. Holy shit.

So Ronda just took $3M to the Champs $100K (non-bonus)?

I guess Rousey gets credit for cashing in all equity at its peak return.

Edit: What @Cellar-Door said.

It wouldn't have mattered if she trained with Pei Mei. Homegirl couldn't slip, parry or block a punch. She doesn't have the athleticism or innate talent to be a decent fighter.

I've always thought she could have developed along with the sport into something like Daniel Cormier or Damian Maia. They are championship level fighters with a truly dominant single grappling related skill that have the ability to mask their faults as strikers. That didn't happen because a grifter convinced her she great at the thing she was actually terrible at. That Beth Coriea knockout is actually the worst thing that ever happened to her.

It may be true that she didn't fight anyone of note - I don't know. But this same kind of progression is what happens to every other immature strategy in competitive games even if the competition is reasonable and otherwise good. I follow a lot of eSports, where metagames are often much more fluid, and this kind of thing happens all the time. Someone discovers that a unit or ability can be used in a way that makes a very particular strategy very good, and until a stable counter is developed, it dominates.

Rousey probably got over-famous with her one special move, that's for sure. But man did she know how to do that one special thing well.

The odd thing about all of this, really, is that it dominated for so long and to such heights. There already was a "one true style" in Men's MMA that could have been reasonably copied in Women's MMA, because (at least, as near best I can tell) the sport had already dealt with pure grapplers long ago.
