The thing I noticed about the winning back take (and the above video) is that the back kick was attempted when there was too little room for it to really connect and then you end up in close quarters in a potentially compromised position. I wonder if they noticed on film that was a mistake Valentina was prone to do.

Yeah it was a real mistake for her. Bit of a high risk move in a fight she was winning. And definitely way too close, especially given her reach advantage.

Reminder that the main card today is at 5pm eastern because UFC 286 is in England.

I forgot and am rushing my workout so I can hopefully get back home in time.

I’m a novice UFC spectator. I know the first fight just now was close, but I don’t get how Vettori won. Seemed like Dolidze landed the bigger hits and did more damage. Crowd didn’t seem to like the result either.

Sorry, I was only half paying attention to that fight so I can't comment on the first part, but as for the second part, you have to be careful with crowd reactions. In a majority of fights, there is one fighter who tends to be the crowd favorite and that can weigh into their response if it's a close-ish fight. Historically, Vettori has not been a well-like fighter because he's a very outspoken lughead. The only time I can remember UFC fandom rooting for Martin is when he fought Paulo Costa and Costa (who also isn't very well liked) came in like 10 pounds overweight. Martin accepted the fight and handled it very well.

Also - and I don't think it's the case here - but some fighters might have a style or strategy for the fight which the crowd finds boring, so they might not like that fighter winning even if they really did deserve it. Or, in other words, they're drunk and want excitement.

FWIW, I browsed r/MMA, and consensus seems to be that the result (Vettori win) is fine, but that the one judge's score of 30-27 is insane, as Dolidze definitely won a round. From the little I saw, Dolidze was landing some big head shots, but it's not like Vettori wasn't landing at all. And you have to remember that leg kicks count as well, and Dolidze's leg was raw by the end. Finally, remember that they score by round.

28-28…um, I don’t think so bro.
A 10-10, 10-9, 9-10, is 29-29

edit: did I mis hear or did they fuck up. There was no point deduction, right?

There were many bizarre scorecards tonight much more than usual. One specific judge (Sutherland?) had that Vettori 30-27 (giving Vettori R1 should be grounds for removal of any future UFC events), Gaethje 10-8 in R3 (also grounds) and another of similar ridiculousness. I will rewatch tomorrow.

Edit: The other was 30-27 Morales. Jesus.

Edit2: Another was a judge having R1 10-9 to Garthje which is also lol…..then had R2 to Fiziev!

2nd was close. I can see that one going either way.
I’m just glad the judges didn’t agree this up. I had 48-46 Edwards but draw was def live.

One weird instance in the Mokaev fight toward end of R1 I believe and wondering if anyone else saw or cares to watch on replay. He came into the fight off a shoulder injury so I thought it popped out because he had top or side control (don’t recall specifics) and he clearly tapped. I’m going to watch this again tomorrow too but live I thought I was seeing things, I wound back once and confirmed that he tapped. Nobody on the broadcast mentioned it but my initial thought was that his shoulder came out then went right back in and continued fighting.
